AB-900, Microsoft 365 Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals, is a current beginner-level certification for people who need to understand how an AI-enabled Microsoft 365 environment is supported, secured, and protected. It combines familiar Microsoft 365 objects and admin concepts with data protection, identity, Copilot administration, and basic agent lifecycle tasks. The exam is administrative in orientation, but it stays at a fundamentals level.
The AB-900 exam currently assesses core Microsoft 365 services and objects, data protection and governance for Microsoft 365 and Copilot, and basic administrative tasks for Copilot and agents. Microsoft has announced an English-language update for October 14, 2026. Candidates testing before or after that date should use the skill outline associated with their scheduled version rather than assuming all published future changes are already active.
The most useful mental model is “AI inherits the environment.” Copilot and agents operate inside a tenant built from identities, groups, sites, mailboxes, teams, permissions, policies, and data. If those foundations are poorly understood, AI administration becomes guesswork. AB-900 therefore rewards candidates who can explain how Microsoft 365 is organized and how security and governance shape what AI-powered experiences can safely do.
Every Microsoft 365 scenario begins with an identity and an entitlement. Users and groups receive licenses, permissions, policies, and administrative roles. A person may be licensed for one service but not another, or may belong to a group that grants access to a SharePoint site or team. AB-900 candidates should be able to recognize how these objects influence feature availability and administrative scope.
Use Microsoft Entra ID concepts to connect authentication with authorization. Then practice simple cases: a new employee joins a department, a contractor needs limited access, and an administrator requires a privileged role for a temporary task. Identify which objects change, how least privilege applies, and what should happen when access is no longer justified.
License troubleshooting is a useful fundamentals exercise because it forces several concepts together. When a feature is missing, verify the user exists, the correct license or service plan is assigned, group-based assignment has processed, and the user is signing into the intended tenant. Avoid jumping directly to application settings. This sequence mirrors real administration: entitlement problems often look like product failures until the identity and licensing layer is checked first.
AB-900 expects familiarity with the major admin centers and the objects they manage. Exchange Online includes mailboxes and distribution groups; SharePoint includes sites, libraries, folders, and permissions; Teams includes teams, channels, policies, and collaboration settings. These are not isolated products. A team can rely on a group and a SharePoint site, while users move between workloads using the same organizational identity.
Create a small environment map that traces a project team from group membership to Teams collaboration and SharePoint content. Add a mailbox or distribution group where appropriate. Then ask what happens when a member is added, removed, or moved to another role. This exercise makes it easier to reason about Copilot because the AI experience can surface information from services whose access rules were configured long before Copilot was enabled.
Fundamentals candidates should understand the difference between proving identity and deciding what an authenticated identity can access. Passwords, multifactor authentication, single sign-on, and other authentication methods establish or strengthen identity assurance. Conditional access evaluates conditions and can require stronger controls or block access. These ideas matter for AI because a compromised account may reach both ordinary Microsoft 365 content and AI-enabled interfaces to that content.
The SC-900 security, compliance, and identity fundamentals exam provides a broader starting point for learners who want more depth. For AB-900, practice with policy logic: if a user signs in from an unmanaged device, from a risky location, or into a sensitive application, what additional requirement might be appropriate? Focus on the principle of risk-based access rather than memorizing every possible policy option.
Microsoft 365 contains business data with different sensitivity, retention, sharing, and regulatory requirements. Administrators need to understand why organizations classify information, restrict sharing, preserve records, and audit activity. Copilot does not remove those obligations. In fact, faster discovery and summarization can make existing oversharing problems more visible because users can ask natural-language questions across information they already have permission to access.
Practice with three document classes: public marketing material, internal operational content, and highly sensitive financial or personnel data. Define who should access each, how external sharing should differ, and what retention or protection considerations apply. Then ask how a Copilot response should behave if a user has legitimate access to one source but not another. This connects governance concepts to realistic AI administration rather than treating them as separate exam chapters.
Retention and deletion should be considered alongside access. Some information must be preserved for business or regulatory reasons, while other content should not remain indefinitely. AI-generated content can also become part of the organization’s records. Fundamentals candidates should recognize that governance applies to the information lifecycle, not only to who can open a file today. Ask who owns the content, how long it should exist, and what policy determines disposal or preservation.
AB-900 includes basic administrative tasks around Copilot. Candidates should understand that enabling the service is only part of the job. Administrators may need to manage who has access, review usage and adoption signals, and understand how organizational settings affect the experience. Prompt-related capabilities can also have lifecycle implications when prompts are saved, shared, scheduled, or deleted.
A practical exercise is to define a small Copilot pilot for one department. List the eligible users, the data repositories they depend on, any high-risk sharing patterns that should be corrected first, the usage metrics you would watch, and the support questions you expect. This makes the administrative role concrete and prepares you to reason about why a deployment could be technically available yet operationally unready.
Adoption signals should be interpreted carefully. High usage can indicate value, experimentation, or even poor process if users repeatedly regenerate unsatisfactory content. Low usage may reflect lack of training, unavailable data, restrictive policy, or a workflow that simply does not benefit from Copilot. An administrator may not own business adoption, but should know how to collect useful evidence and route it to owners rather than treating a usage number as a complete success metric.
At the fundamentals level, an agent should be understood as a managed capability that may connect users to knowledge or actions. Administrators need to recognize who can create or access agents, how approval works, where agents are monitored, and why ownership matters. An abandoned agent connected to outdated content can become a business problem even if it remains technically functional.
The deeper AB-620 AI Agent Builder path focuses on planning, extending, integrating, testing, and managing agents. AB-900 candidates do not need that implementation depth, but they should understand the lifecycle around the builder. Create a basic agent register with owner, purpose, audience, data sources, approval status, last review date, and retirement plan. That is a useful governance habit in any organization adopting agents.
Administrative monitoring is not only about uptime. For Copilot and agents, organizations also care about adoption, policy compliance, operational behavior, and lifecycle. Usage signals can show whether licensed users are receiving value, while security and governance signals can expose risk. Administrators should know which questions belong in Microsoft 365, Entra, Purview, Power Platform, or other management experiences, even if they are not expected to master every advanced feature.
Practice by defining five operational questions: Who is using Copilot? Which groups have access? Are agents still owned and approved? Has a risky permission change expanded access to sensitive content? Are users reporting quality or access problems? For each question, identify the likely evidence and the team that would act on it. This builds the cross-service reasoning that fundamentals exams increasingly reward.
Service health belongs in that operational picture. A user complaint about Copilot or an agent may originate from a Microsoft 365 outage, a permissions change, an identity problem, or the AI feature itself. A good fundamentals troubleshooting path checks broad service status before making local changes. That habit protects administrators from creating new problems while chasing symptoms caused by a wider incident.
The Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals credential is intentionally introductory. Administrators who move into enterprise-scale tenant, security, compliance, and AI service operations can progress toward AB-650 Microsoft 365 and AI Services Administration. The distinction is useful: AB-900 explains the objects and principles; AB-650 expects broader operational responsibility.
Do not study AB-900 as a stripped-down list of admin center names. Build a small conceptual tenant and repeatedly trace how users, groups, licenses, roles, content, security, governance, Copilot, and agents interact. When you can explain why a permission or policy matters to the AI experience, the exam objectives stop looking like unrelated product vocabulary and start forming one administrative model.
AB-900 is a fundamentals exam, but the strongest preparation is still hands-on and scenario-based. Learn the Microsoft 365 objects, understand identity and data boundaries, and practice explaining how Copilot and agents inherit the security and governance of the tenant around them.
