DP-750 Azure Databricks Data Engineering: What the Exam Really Tests

DP-750, Implementing Data Engineering Solutions Using Azure Databricks, is a current Microsoft exam for the Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate certification. It is not a generic Spark test and it is not simply a renamed data-engineering fundamentals exam. The current blueprint expects candidates to work across environment configuration, Unity Catalog governance, batch and streaming ingestion, transformation, data quality, Lakeflow pipelines and jobs, source control, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance optimization. Microsoft also expects practical SQL and Python knowledge, familiarity with Git, and enough Azure context to work with services such as Microsoft Entra, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Monitor.

The DP-750 exam therefore rewards people who can reason through an end-to-end Databricks workload rather than identify isolated features. A useful preparation plan should connect data design, governance, engineering, deployment, and operations. If a pipeline lands data correctly but violates catalog permissions, ignores schema drift, or becomes too expensive to run at production scale, the solution is incomplete.

DP-750 also sits inside a broader Azure Databricks Data Engineer Associate path. Microsoft has announced an English-language skills update for October 19, 2026, so candidates preparing now should study the current objectives while checking the official outline again shortly before the exam. The best way to stay resilient to blueprint changes is to master the underlying engineering decisions rather than memorize interface labels.

Start with the architecture of a governed Databricks workspace

The first objective area asks candidates to set up and configure an Azure Databricks environment. That includes choosing appropriate compute, setting performance characteristics, installing libraries, controlling access, and organizing data objects in Unity Catalog. The exam can therefore test a design choice before it tests a command. A serverless option may fit one workload, while job compute or another model fits a scheduled pipeline with different isolation, performance, or cost requirements.

Build a small workspace and deliberately separate development from production concerns. Create catalogs and schemas with clear ownership, establish naming rules, and decide where managed versus external objects belong. Then examine how those decisions affect discoverability, permissions, and deployment. This is also a good point to understand how the Microsoft credential relates to the wider Databricks certifications: the vendor-neutral platform concepts overlap, but DP-750 adds Azure-specific integration and Microsoft credential expectations.

Unity Catalog turns governance into an engineering responsibility

Unity Catalog is not merely a place to browse tables. Microsoft’s objectives include privileges for users, groups, and service principals; table- and column-level controls; row filters and column masks; attribute-based access control; data retention; lineage; audit logging; secrets; managed identities; and secure data sharing. A candidate should be able to explain why a particular control belongs at the catalog, schema, table, row, column, or identity layer.

Practice with a scenario rather than a checklist. Imagine a finance dataset that analysts can query, data engineers can modify, and an external partner can receive only in a constrained form. Design the permissions, masking, lineage expectations, and sharing method. Then change one requirement and observe which layer must change. That exercise makes governance concrete and reinforces a broader lesson from modern data engineering: reliable pipelines are inseparable from ownership, quality, and controlled access.

Data modeling decisions shape both reliability and performance. DP-750 covers ingestion and modeling choices such as batch versus streaming, file and table formats, partitioning, slowly changing dimensions, temporal history, managed versus external tables, and clustering strategies. Candidates should understand the consequences of these choices. A partitioning scheme that looks logical can still create too many small files. A history requirement may justify an SCD design that is unnecessary for a transient staging table. Delta features can simplify reliability, but they still require sound data modeling.

Use one dataset and model it in several ways. Start with raw JSON or CSV, land it into Delta, define a curated table, and decide how changes should be represented over time. Compare a conventional partition strategy with liquid clustering or other optimization techniques when appropriate. Keep the business grain explicit: every transformation should preserve or deliberately change the meaning of a row. The goal is to make schema, history, and performance choices explainable rather than habitual.

Ingestion should be designed for change, not just the first successful load

The current exam includes Lakeflow Connect, notebooks, SQL loading methods, change data capture, Structured Streaming, Azure Event Hubs, and Lakeflow Spark Declarative Pipelines with Auto Loader. The important skill is selecting the right mechanism for source behavior and service-level expectations. A daily file drop, a continuously arriving event stream, and a transactional CDC feed all create different ordering, latency, replay, and failure concerns.

Create two ingestion paths in a lab: one batch source and one streaming source. Introduce late data, duplicated files, a new column, and a malformed record. Decide whether the pipeline should reject, quarantine, evolve, or repair the data. Then test restart behavior. This is where the exam becomes operational rather than theoretical. Strong preparation includes understanding how a pipeline behaves on its second and fiftieth runs, not only whether it succeeds once.

Transformation and data quality belong in the same design

Microsoft expects candidates to profile data, select appropriate data types, handle duplicates and nulls, filter and aggregate, join and combine datasets, pivot and denormalize, and load data with merge, insert, or append operations. The same objective area includes validation rules, schema enforcement, schema drift, and pipeline expectations. That combination is intentional: transformation without quality controls can simply move bad data faster.

Choose a messy source and define measurable expectations before writing the final transformation. Which fields may be null? Which values must be unique? What range is valid? Which schema changes are safe to absorb automatically, and which should stop the pipeline? Record rejected-row counts and quality trends rather than treating validation as a one-time gate. A candidate who can explain the tradeoff between permissive evolution and strict enforcement is better prepared than one who only knows the relevant syntax.

Lakeflow Jobs and pipelines test orchestration, not just notebooks

DP-750 includes pipeline ordering, notebook versus declarative pipeline choices, task logic, precedence, triggers, schedules, alerts, restarts, and error handling. That means candidates need to think in graphs of work. A notebook may be perfectly written but still fail the production requirement if dependencies are wrong, retries duplicate data, or downstream tasks run before quality checks complete.

Design a three-stage job that ingests, validates, and publishes data. Add a failure path that records enough evidence to troubleshoot the incident, and decide whether the job should automatically retry. Then simulate partial success: the first stage finishes but the second fails after producing some output. Your recovery design should avoid corrupting the curated layer. This practical orchestration mindset is also useful alongside broader Databricks data-engineer preparation, where operational behavior often separates a demo from a production pipeline.

Git and deployment practices are part of the data engineer role

The blueprint explicitly includes version control, branches, pull requests, conflict resolution, test strategy, Databricks Asset Bundles, CLI deployment, and REST APIs. Data engineering teams increasingly manage notebooks, SQL, configuration, and pipeline definitions as software artifacts. Candidates should therefore understand what belongs in source control, what must stay secret, how environments differ, and how a change moves safely from development to production.

Create a repository for a small Databricks project and make deployment repeatable. Separate environment-specific values from reusable code, add at least one unit test and one end-to-end validation, and practice a pull-request change that modifies both transformation logic and infrastructure configuration. If you already know GitHub Actions, use that knowledge to reason about CI/CD, but keep the DP-750 focus on how deployment quality affects a data workload rather than on GitHub syntax itself.

Performance troubleshooting should be evidence-driven

The final major area includes monitoring compute consumption, repairing jobs, tuning Spark workloads, investigating skew, spill, shuffle, caching, and DAG behavior, optimizing Delta tables, and integrating logs and alerts with Azure Monitor. These are high-value skills because pipeline failures are often symptoms of data shape, resource configuration, or execution-plan problems rather than obvious coding errors.

Take a working workload and make it inefficient on purpose. Create a skewed join, generate many small files, choose inadequate compute, or force excessive shuffling. Inspect the Spark UI and query profile before changing anything. Form a hypothesis, make one change, and measure the result. The same discipline applies to cost: faster is not automatically better if it requires disproportionate resources. Microsoft’s objectives reward candidates who can diagnose the bottleneck and choose a defensible correction.

A useful capstone is to trace one dataset through the entire platform and keep a record of every decision. Start with source characteristics, choose batch or streaming ingestion, define catalog placement and permissions, transform the data, enforce quality expectations, publish the curated result, deploy the code through source control, schedule the workload, and monitor it. When a requirement changes, such as adding a new consumer or tightening retention, identify which layers must change and which should remain untouched. That exercise exposes weak mental models quickly because every design choice has downstream effects on security, reliability, cost, and operability.

Candidates should also practice explaining tradeoffs without relying on a graphical interface. For compute, compare startup time, isolation, elasticity, and cost. For table layout, compare simple organization with partition or clustering strategies. For ingestion, compare replay behavior and schema change. For pipelines, compare explicit orchestration with declarative management. Writing these decisions in plain language makes scenario questions easier because the exam often presents several technically possible options and asks for the one that best fits stated constraints. The deciding factor is usually the requirement, not the popularity of the feature.

DP-750 is best prepared as a complete engineering system: governed data, reliable ingestion, intentional modeling, testable transformations, repeatable deployment, and observable operations. Microsoft’s current objectives make hands-on work essential, and the announced October 19 update is another reason to build durable platform understanding instead of memorizing a static list. Candidates who can explain why a Databricks solution is secure, maintainable, recoverable, and efficient are studying at the level the exam is designed to measure.
