Microsoft’s old Dynamics 365 Fundamentals path needs to be read as legacy certification history, not as a current exam route. Microsoft retired both of the exams that formed the fundamentals family—MB-910 for customer engagement applications and MB-920 for finance and operations applications—on December 31, 2025. Candidates can no longer schedule either exam.
The legacy topic remains useful because people still search for the umbrella term “Dynamics 365 Fundamentals,” but the current facts must be explicit. The historical family contained two separate fundamentals credentials rather than one combined exam. MB-910 represented the CRM/customer-engagement side, while MB-920 represented the ERP/finance-and-operations side.
Microsoft now directs learners toward role-specific Dynamics credentials and newer AI-oriented pathways rather than a replacement fundamentals exam with the same scope. Anyone using this page to plan a current certification should therefore treat the retired material as orientation and choose a live path from the broader Microsoft certification portfolio based on the work they actually intend to perform.
Before retirement, MB-910 introduced the business value and core capabilities of Dynamics 365 applications associated with customer engagement. Its subject matter included areas such as sales, customer service, marketing-related capabilities, field service, shared platform concepts, and how the applications supported customer-facing processes. It was designed as a fundamentals credential, so it focused on recognizing capabilities and business scenarios rather than configuring an enterprise implementation.
Historical learners may still find an MB-910 customer-engagement concepts useful for understanding how Microsoft framed the CRM side of the product family. The important caveat is timing: it should not be presented as a current exam-preparation route. Its value now is conceptual, especially for readers who encounter older job descriptions, training plans, transcripts, or documentation that still refer to Dynamics 365 Fundamentals (CRM).
MB-920 served a different audience. It focused on the ERP side of Dynamics 365, including business scenarios around finance, supply chain, commerce, human resources, project operations, and the way enterprise processes are represented across applications. Again, the objective was foundational recognition, not the depth expected from a functional consultant or developer.
The historical MB-920 finance and operations scope can still help a newcomer understand the vocabulary that current role-based credentials assume. Concepts such as financial processes, procurement, inventory, order flows, and operational data do not disappear because an exam retires. What changes is the certification route used to validate expertise in those areas.
Because both exams retired on December 31, 2025, a current learner should not build a schedule around MB-910 or MB-920 or treat a third-party availability listing as proof that the exams can still be taken. Microsoft’s retired-exam records identify both codes and the same retirement date. That is the authoritative status distinction for 2026.
Retirement also means that old practice material should be handled carefully. It can still teach terminology or provide historical context, but product names, interface details, licensing, feature boundaries, and certification expectations may have moved on. Current preparation should start from a live credential and its official skills outline, then use older fundamentals content only when it supports a concept that remains relevant.
Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 credential guidance says the Dynamics 365 Fundamentals certifications are deprecated, but previously earned fundamentals credentials do not expire and stay on the learner’s Microsoft Learn transcript. That distinction matters: the certification can be retired for new candidates while still remaining part of the record for people who earned it when it was available.
That status should be described precisely on résumés and internal skills inventories. Someone who earned Dynamics 365 Fundamentals (CRM) or (ERP) can list the credential they actually received. They should not imply that MB-910 or MB-920 is still an active exam, and they should not assume the historical credential proves current implementation depth in a product area that has continued to evolve.
Microsoft’s current Dynamics guidance is centered on the work people perform: functional consulting, solution architecture, business analysis, development, and business ownership or use. This is a different model from a single introductory credential. It asks candidates to choose the application family and responsibility that match their real work.
For customer-service specialists, Dynamics 365 Customer Service Functional Consultant Associate is an example of that role-specific direction. Finance professionals can look toward Dynamics 365 Finance Functional Consultant Associate. These credentials demand substantially more implementation knowledge than the retired fundamentals exams, so the move should be treated as a progression in scope rather than a simple exam-code substitution.
Role-based learning also changes the depth of assessment. A fundamentals candidate might once have been asked to recognize what a Dynamics application was for; a functional-consultant candidate is expected to configure processes, data, security, and application behavior in much greater detail. Learners moving from legacy MB-910 or MB-920 notes should therefore expect a genuine increase in hands-on scope rather than a rebranded version of the same test.
On the operations side, Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant Associate and Dynamics 365 Business Central Functional Consultant Associate illustrate why a generic fundamentals label is no longer enough for many practitioners. Supply chain and Business Central represent different products, process models, and customer contexts even though both can be described broadly as ERP.
Candidates should therefore start with the systems they use, the processes they own, and the decisions they make. Someone who configures inventory, procurement, and manufacturing workflows has a different learning path from a consultant implementing Business Central for a smaller organization. Choosing by job reality produces a stronger certification plan than choosing by the word “Dynamics” alone.
The CRM-versus-ERP split can still help new learners orient themselves. Customer engagement applications revolve around relationships, service, selling, and front-office interactions. Finance and operations applications focus more heavily on accounting, supply chain, commerce, and operational processes. Microsoft’s product portfolio now crosses those boundaries in more sophisticated ways, but the distinction explains why there were two fundamentals exams in the first place.
Use that model as a starting question rather than a permanent taxonomy: is the role mainly customer-facing process work, operational and financial process work, application development, analytics, architecture, or cross-platform AI transformation? The answer points toward a current specialization and prevents candidates from trying to recreate a retired fundamentals path that Microsoft no longer offers.
The portfolio has also become more intertwined with Power Platform and AI. Dynamics applications increasingly participate in workflows that involve Dataverse, automation, copilots, agents, analytics, and cross-application data. That makes platform awareness more valuable, but it does not erase application specialization. A finance consultant still needs finance depth; a customer-service consultant still needs to understand case and service processes even when AI augments the experience.
Useful legacy material teaches concepts that survive product change: the purpose of customer relationship management, how service cases flow, why master data matters, how financial transactions affect reporting, how inventory processes connect purchasing and sales, and how business applications support end-to-end processes. Those ideas remain valuable even when the screen layout or certification program changes.
Less durable material includes exact navigation steps, licensing assumptions, feature names that have been rebranded, and exam-specific tricks. When reviewing MB-910 or MB-920 content in 2026, separate the business concept from the historical test objective. That makes the material an efficient foundation instead of a source of outdated exam expectations.
Microsoft did not replace MB-910 and MB-920 with a single new fundamentals certification that maps directly onto both retired exams. Current learners should resist the urge to search for one code that “replaces Dynamics Fundamentals.” The better question is which current credential validates the next level of skill required for a specific role or product.
That change makes the certification decision more demanding but also more useful. Instead of proving general awareness across a broad product family, candidates can align learning with the application, business process, and responsibility they actually own. The retired fundamentals credentials remain part of Microsoft certification history; the live opportunity is to translate that foundational knowledge into a current, role-specific capability.
For employers, this distinction matters when interpreting older credentials. A retired fundamentals certification can still demonstrate that someone invested in learning the product family at a particular point in time, but current project staffing should consider recent hands-on experience and live role-based credentials where appropriate. Certification history is useful context; it is not a substitute for verifying present-day capability in a fast-changing business-application platform.
A sensible current learning plan can still begin with the old fundamentals concepts if the learner is completely new to Dynamics, but it should quickly pivot to Microsoft’s current product documentation and the objectives of a live credential. That preserves the orientation value of MB-910 and MB-920 without anchoring preparation to a certification structure that ended in 2025.
