MD-102 is the current Microsoft endpoint-administration exam, with a skills outline updated July 24, 2026. Microsoft frames the role around preparing device infrastructure, enrolling and managing endpoints with Intune, implementing identity and compliance, deploying and securing applications, protecting devices, managing updates, and using automation, monitoring, and reporting to improve endpoint operations. The MD-102 exam therefore reflects cloud-managed endpoint work rather than traditional desktop support alone.
Candidates need to understand Windows endpoints, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, application protection, configuration and security policies, Windows update services, and the operational data used to keep a device estate healthy. The challenge is not memorizing every setting. It is deciding which control belongs at identity, enrollment, compliance, configuration, application, security, or update level.
MD-102 sits inside the Endpoint Administrator Associate track. A strong lab environment should contain multiple device states so that candidates can practice both normal management and exception handling.
Endpoint management begins before a device appears in Intune. Organizations choose join types, enrollment methods, ownership models, enrollment restrictions, platform limits, and provisioning approaches such as Windows Autopilot. Each decision affects user experience, device identity, policy scope, and supportability.
Build several test profiles rather than one ideal machine. Include a corporate Windows device, a personally owned mobile device, and a device that fails an enrollment prerequisite. Trace how each object appears in Microsoft Entra ID and Intune and which policies become applicable. This makes scenario questions easier because you can reason from the device lifecycle instead of guessing which enrollment feature sounds familiar.
A device can be enrolled without being compliant, and a user can be authenticated without being allowed to access a resource. MD-102 candidates should understand Microsoft Entra device identities, compliance policies, Conditional Access relationships, security baselines, and the signals that determine whether access should be permitted.
Create a compliance rule, deliberately violate it, and observe the user experience. Then connect compliance to an access decision and test remediation. This reveals the distinction between measuring device state and enforcing resource access. For deeper identity context, the SC-300 identity domain is adjacent, but MD-102 focuses on the endpoint administrator’s role in supplying trustworthy device and compliance signals.
Configuration profiles should be designed around outcomes and conflicts. Settings catalogs, templates, administrative templates, scripts, and policy CSP-backed controls give administrators many ways to configure devices. The exam can test what happens when settings overlap or when the deployment target is wrong. A policy is only effective if the intended users or devices receive it and competing configuration does not override or conflict with it.
Build a baseline for browser, security, device restrictions, and user experience, then intentionally create one conflicting setting from another profile. Use Intune reporting to determine which assignment and policy produced the conflict. This is the kind of troubleshooting endpoint administrators perform in production, and it is far more instructive than simply locating settings in the portal.
MD-102 covers app packaging and deployment across supported platforms, assignment intent, dependencies, requirements, supersedence, Microsoft 365 Apps, Store apps, Win32 applications, and mobile application management. Candidates should also understand app protection and app configuration policies for scenarios where organizational data needs controls even when full device management is not appropriate.
Practice deploying one Win32 application with a detection rule and dependency, then replace it with a newer version. Add an application-protection scenario for a mobile productivity app and compare what can be controlled with and without device enrollment. These exercises clarify the difference between managing the device and managing organizational data inside an app.
Security settings span antivirus, firewall, attack-surface reduction, disk encryption, local account protection, endpoint detection and response, account protection, and security baselines. Candidates need to know not only what each control does but also how Intune and Microsoft Defender signals come together operationally.
A useful scenario starts with a device that is technically enrolled but has weak protection. Apply security policies in stages and verify the resulting state. Then create an exception for a legitimate application and document why it is narrower than disabling the control globally. The zero-trust endpoint perspective is useful here because device trust is conditional and evidence-based, not assumed simply because a laptop belongs to the company.
Windows update management requires balancing security, stability, user productivity, and support capacity. MD-102 candidates should understand update rings, feature and quality updates, expedited updates, driver or firmware considerations, reporting, and how deployment waves reduce blast radius.
Design three rings for a fictional organization: a small validation group, a broader early-adopter group, and general production. Define deferrals, deadlines, restart behavior, and rollback criteria. Then simulate a problematic update and decide where to pause or expedite changes. This creates practical understanding of why update policy is an operational risk-management tool rather than a simple on/off setting.
The July 2026 outline gives explicit attention to automating management tasks and monitoring endpoint health. Administrators need to use device actions, remediation, scripts, reports, analytics, and health signals to find problems before users open tickets. The ability to act remotely is powerful, so candidates should also understand when an action is destructive or requires careful targeting.
Build a remediation for a simple configuration drift and measure which devices detect and correct the issue. Review enrollment, compliance, configuration, application, and update reports as separate evidence sources. The goal is to develop a diagnostic sequence: identify scope, determine which management layer failed, inspect the relevant data, and take the least disruptive corrective action.
Real endpoint estates contain exceptions: stale objects, partially enrolled devices, users with multiple endpoints, unsupported versions, failed app installations, conflicting policies, and security findings. A lab where everything succeeds on the first attempt does not prepare a candidate for the reasoning MD-102 expects.
Create failure cases deliberately and document the path to resolution. Use the MD-102 domain breakdown as a coverage check, but make every objective operational. Also recognize the boundary with broader Microsoft 365 administration: MS-102 remains a separate tenant-level administrator exam as of October 3, 2026, with its own announced retirement later in the year.
Device inventory quality is an underrated part of endpoint administration. Duplicate records, stale objects, unclear ownership, and devices that exist in Entra ID but not Intune can undermine compliance reporting and targeting. Practice identifying a device through its full lifecycle: procurement or registration, join, enrollment, primary-user assignment, policy receipt, normal operation, reset or retirement, and final record cleanup. At each stage, note which system owns the state. This makes troubleshooting much faster because the administrator can ask where in the lifecycle the expected evidence disappeared.
Support workflows should also use the management platform instead of bypassing it. If a user reports that an application is missing, first inspect assignment, requirement, detection, and installation status rather than immediately connecting to the device and installing it manually. If a configuration is absent, inspect policy scope and status before editing local settings. Manual fixes may restore one endpoint but leave the underlying deployment problem intact. MD-102 rewards the mindset of managing fleets consistently rather than treating every device as an isolated desktop.
Security incidents provide an excellent integrated practice case. Start with an endpoint that reports suspicious activity, then decide which information comes from Defender, which device controls are managed through Intune, whether Conditional Access should restrict access, and what remote action is appropriate. Document what evidence must be preserved before a wipe or retirement. The current SC-500 security path reaches deeper into security engineering, but the endpoint administrator still needs to understand how device posture contributes to the organization’s broader response.
Finally, candidates should learn to communicate endpoint state in operational language. Instead of saying that a profile is 'green,' explain which devices received it, which setting it enforces, what percentage failed, what the failure codes indicate, and what corrective action is planned. This turns portal data into management information and reflects the real responsibility behind the exam: keeping a large and changing device estate secure, usable, and supportable.
Licensing and feature availability should be treated carefully during preparation. Intune Suite add-ons and related security capabilities may require entitlements beyond a basic management license, and organizations can have mixed licensing states. Candidates should understand the purpose of the capabilities named in the blueprint without assuming every tenant exposes every control. In a lab, document which features are available, which license enables them, and what fallback management approach exists when an add-on is absent. This prevents portal familiarity from being mistaken for architectural understanding.
Endpoint retirement should receive the same discipline as enrollment. When a device leaves service, the administrator must decide whether to retire, wipe, delete, or simply remove corporate data, and must understand how those choices affect records and user information. Practice the lifecycle end state on test devices so that destructive actions are not learned for the first time during an incident. Clean retirement keeps inventory and compliance reporting trustworthy.
MD-102 is best approached as lifecycle administration: establish trustworthy device identity, enroll correctly, configure and secure endpoints, deliver apps and updates, then monitor evidence and remediate drift. Candidates who can explain why a device is in a particular state will be better prepared than those who only remember where settings appear in Intune.
