Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert is still active in September 2026, but it is approaching retirement. Microsoft states that the certification and its required MS-102 exam retire on November 30, 2026. After that date, candidates will no longer be able to earn or renew this certification. Anyone preparing now needs to treat the retirement deadline as part of the certification plan.
The credential is designed for administrators who deploy and manage Microsoft 365 at tenant level across cloud and hybrid environments. The role coordinates identity, security, compliance, endpoints, applications, and workload administration rather than specializing in only one service.
The current MS-102 scope covers four broad responsibilities: deploying and managing a Microsoft 365 tenant, implementing and managing Microsoft Entra identity and access, managing security and threats with Microsoft Defender XDR, and managing compliance with Microsoft Purview.
This makes MS-102 an integration exam. Candidates need to understand how several Microsoft 365 control planes interact. A tenant configuration can affect identity. Identity affects device and application access. Security policy can generate incidents across workloads. Compliance controls can change how information is retained or shared.
Passing MS-102 alone is not enough. Microsoft requires candidates to hold at least one eligible associate-level certification. Current options include Endpoint Administrator Associate, Teams Administrator Associate, and Identity and Access Administrator Associate, with Microsoft also listing Information Security Administrator Associate.
This prerequisite structure reflects the role itself. A tenant-level administrator is expected to have at least one area of real operational depth before proving cross-workload expertise.
Deploying a tenant is not simply creating users and assigning licenses. Administrators need to understand domains, organizational settings, service configuration, roles, groups, administrative boundaries, health, adoption, and support. Decisions should be repeatable and governed rather than made manually without documentation.
The Microsoft 365 admin center provides useful operational context, but expert candidates should be comfortable moving across specialized portals when the task belongs to identity, security, compliance, Teams, Exchange, SharePoint, or endpoints.
Microsoft Entra ID underpins authentication, access, application identity, groups, and many governance decisions. MS-102 candidates should understand user and group administration, authentication methods, conditional access concepts, privileged access, and the relationship between cloud identity and hybrid directories.
Microsoft Entra ID is not one workload among many; it is a control layer that shapes access to nearly every other Microsoft 365 service. That is why identity decisions have effects across tenant administration, security, devices, applications, and collaboration.
The current exam gives substantial weight to managing security and threats. Candidates need to understand how Microsoft Defender XDR brings signals and incidents together across identities, endpoints, email, applications, and cloud activity.
Study the difference between configuring protection, investigating an alert, managing an incident, and improving security posture. A tenant administrator may not perform every security analyst task, but they must understand how administrative configuration affects detection and response.
Purview topics include information protection, data lifecycle, records, audit, eDiscovery, risk, and compliance-related controls. The exam expects candidates to understand how policies apply to organizational information rather than memorize product names.
Information protection and compliance in Microsoft 365 provide practical context for this domain. Administrators should be able to explain what a policy is protecting, which data or users it applies to, and how results are monitored.
Microsoft 365 can be administered through graphical portals, but large environments need automation. PowerShell enables bulk operations, consistent configuration, reporting, and scripted administration across workloads.
Do not prepare by memorizing isolated cmdlets. Build small administrative tasks: report on users, inspect group membership, change settings in bulk, or validate configuration. Then document how you would confirm that the script produced the intended result.
As of September 28, 2026, there is limited time left to complete MS-102 and the prerequisite requirement. Candidates who are already far along may still have a realistic path, but someone starting from zero should evaluate the timeline carefully.
Do not assume that passing one component after the retirement date will complete the credential. Microsoft states that the certification itself retires on November 30, 2026. Candidates should verify scheduling availability, prerequisite status, and current policies before committing money or study time.
Tenant administration, identity, Defender XDR, Purview, PowerShell, and cross-workload coordination will remain valuable after the badge retires. Organizations still need people who can manage Microsoft 365 safely and connect administrative decisions across services.
This distinction matters for study planning. If the certification deadline becomes impractical, the learning is still useful. Continue building operational skill, then map it to the credentials Microsoft keeps active after the retirement transition.
Microsoft's newer Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals credential introduces Microsoft 365 administration together with Copilot and agents, but it is a beginner certification rather than a direct expert-level replacement. For a closer operational continuation, Microsoft now has the beta Microsoft 365 and AI Services Administrator Associate, earned through AB-650. It is associate-level, so it should still not be described as a one-for-one successor to the retiring expert credential.
Modern administrators increasingly need to understand not only users, groups, devices, security, and compliance, but also how AI assistants and agents interact with organizational data and governance.
A strong MS-102 lab should include users, groups, roles, identity controls, security configuration, compliance policies, administrative portals, and PowerShell. Create scenarios: onboard a department, investigate a risky sign-in, review an incident, apply information protection, and validate policy results.
For final review, explain how each administrative decision affects another Microsoft 365 layer. If you can connect tenant configuration, identity, threat protection, and compliance into one operational model, you are preparing for the role rather than memorizing the exam outline.
Hybrid identity deserves special attention because many organizations still synchronize or federate identities from on-premises environments. Candidates should understand that directory synchronization, authentication choices, domain configuration, and identity lifecycle decisions can affect sign-in, access, licensing, and incident response across Microsoft 365.
Administrative roles should be studied through least privilege. A global role may be convenient in a lab, but mature tenants delegate responsibilities across specialized roles and, where available, privileged access workflows. Candidates should ask what access an administrator actually needs, how long they need it, and how activity is audited.
PowerShell also becomes safer when treated as software rather than a collection of one-line commands. Use version control for important scripts, handle errors explicitly, test changes in a safe scope, and record results. Microsoft 365 administrators should use the current workload-specific modules and authentication guidance for their environment rather than assuming that a generic Azure PowerShell setup maps directly to Microsoft 365 administration.
Security operations are most useful when candidates can connect configuration to investigation. A conditional-access decision, endpoint alert, suspicious message, or identity event can contribute to a broader incident. Administrators should understand what telemetry exists, which team owns the next action, and how containment affects business operations.
Compliance scenarios likewise benefit from end-to-end thinking. If a legal or regulatory request requires information to be preserved and found, the administrator needs to understand data locations, retention behavior, permissions, audit evidence, and eDiscovery workflow. The feature names matter, but the governing requirement matters more.
Because this certification is close to retirement, candidates should keep documentation of completion and credential status organized. If the path is completed before November 30, the credential still represents real cross-workload administrative skill; after the deadline, the same technical capabilities should be demonstrated through current credentials, projects, and operational experience rather than by implying MS-102 remains available.
Change management is another expert-level concern. Microsoft 365 services evolve continuously, so administrators need a process for reviewing message-center changes, testing policy updates, communicating user impact, and documenting exceptions. A technically correct change can still cause disruption if it is introduced without coordination.
Service health should be part of troubleshooting discipline. Before changing tenant configuration during a widespread issue, check whether Microsoft is reporting an incident or degradation. This simple habit prevents unnecessary local changes and helps administrators communicate accurately with users and leadership.
For final preparation, practice writing short runbooks. Document how to onboard a user, investigate an identity incident, restore access safely, review a Defender incident, and respond to a compliance request. Runbooks expose gaps in understanding because every vague step must become an actual administrative action.
Before making a post-retirement plan, administrators should review current Microsoft certifications. Microsoft is changing several cloud and AI credentials during 2026, so an older poster or training roadmap may no longer reflect the available exams. Treat the retirement date as a prompt to verify the whole path, not just MS-102.
Administrators who finish the credential before retirement should still plan continued learning, because the Microsoft 365 services and security controls behind the badge will keep changing after the certification itself closes.
That continued practice is the durable value behind the retiring expert path.
