The MS-600 exam, Building Applications and Solutions with Microsoft 365 Core Services, is retired. Microsoft announced the general retirement of the exam and its Teams Application Developer Associate certification for March 31, 2023, while eligible Microsoft Cloud Partner Program learners had a limited private-access path through December 31, 2023. It should therefore be treated as historical certification content, not as a current scheduling option.
MS-600 is still useful as a map of an important developer skill set. Microsoft framed the exam around Microsoft identity, Microsoft Graph, SharePoint extensibility, Microsoft Teams, and Office extensibility. Candidates were expected to understand web-development concepts such as REST APIs, JSON, OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, permissions, and consent. The exam sat at the intersection of application code and Microsoft 365 platform services.
That historical scope helps explain why modern Microsoft 365 development cannot be reduced to one API or one client application. A useful solution may authenticate with Microsoft Entra ID, call Microsoft Graph, surface inside Teams, store or retrieve content from SharePoint, and automate business work through adjacent platform services. The product names evolve, but the integration problem remains.
MS-600 expected developers to understand application registration, authentication flows, delegated versus application permissions, consent, and token use. Those concepts remain foundational. Build a small application that signs a user in, requests only the permissions it needs, and calls an API on the user’s behalf. Then compare that design with a background service that requires application permissions.
The important question is not merely how to obtain a token. A developer must know whose identity the application is using, what the token authorizes, how consent was granted, and how to avoid requesting more privilege than necessary. Microsoft Entra ID is a useful conceptual extension when revisiting this retired exam.
Microsoft Graph was a central part of MS-600 because it provides a unified API surface for users, groups, mail, files, calendars, Teams, and other Microsoft 365 resources. Historical preparation included permissions, queries, paging, change tracking, and working with resource-specific endpoints. Those are durable API habits even though the exact endpoints and SDKs continue to evolve.
Practice by choosing one business workflow rather than making unrelated Graph calls. For example, read a user profile, list upcoming meetings, locate a document, and create a task or notification as part of one scenario. Handle errors and throttling deliberately. A solution that works only with a single happy-path response is not ready for production, and that was true during the MS-600 era as well.
SharePoint and Teams were important because Microsoft 365 applications often need to live where users already work. MS-600 candidates needed to understand how to extend SharePoint and Teams, choose appropriate integration points, and connect those experiences to identity and Microsoft Graph. The hardest part is usually deciding where the application should surface, not writing the first component.
Design a collaboration scenario with a Teams app that displays project information stored in Microsoft 365. Decide whether the experience belongs in a tab, a bot or conversational interaction, a message extension, a SharePoint component, or a combination. Then document the permissions and data flow. This architectural exercise is more valuable than copying a sample project without understanding why its extension point was selected.
The historical exam also covered extending Office experiences. Add-ins and actionable interfaces can bring external or organizational workflows into applications users already know. When reviewing this material today, focus on the design questions: what context does the host application provide, what permissions are required, what data needs to leave the client, and how will the solution behave when the network or service is unavailable?
Those questions connect MS-600 to broader application-development disciplines. AZ-204 Azure Developer was an adjacent Azure development credential that retired on July 31, 2026, while PL-400 Power Platform Developer remains a different developer path rather than a replacement for MS-600. The comparison is useful only for understanding how Microsoft has separated developer specialties; it should not be used to imply a direct successor relationship.
MS-600 content ages faster than a basic productivity exam because authentication libraries, Teams extensibility, Graph APIs, SharePoint Framework versions, and deployment practices change. Use the old objective categories to organize concepts, but verify every implementation detail against current Microsoft documentation before building a live solution. Historical code samples may use packages, permissions, or patterns that are no longer preferred.
The Power Platform Developer Associate path may be relevant when the development requirement is primarily Dataverse, Power Apps, or platform automation. The Azure Developer Associate path is more relevant when the solution is centered on Azure application services. Neither should be presented as a direct successor to MS-600.
Permission design was one of the most important MS-600 lessons because Microsoft Graph and Microsoft 365 resources can expose highly sensitive organizational data. Compare delegated permission, where an application acts with a signed-in user, with application permission, where a service can operate without that user present. For each sample feature, write down the minimum permission required and who must consent. This habit remains valuable in any modern Microsoft cloud application.
API reliability should be practiced explicitly. Graph responses may be paged, throttled, delayed, or partially unavailable. Build retry handling that respects service guidance, process next-page links instead of assuming one response contains everything, and log enough information to diagnose failures. A demo that works with five test objects may fail badly in a production tenant with thousands of users unless these behaviors are anticipated.
Change notifications and delta-style synchronization are another durable concept from the MS-600 era. Applications should avoid repeatedly downloading every object when only a small subset changed. Design a synchronization process that records state, handles missed notifications, and can recover by resynchronizing when needed. This demonstrates the difference between calling an API and building an operational integration.
Teams extensibility should be evaluated against user workflow. A tab works well for an embedded web experience, a message extension can help users find or insert information while composing, and a bot or conversational experience can handle command-style interaction. The best choice depends on what the user is doing at that moment. Selecting an extension point because it is fashionable usually produces a weaker application.
SharePoint Framework work similarly requires attention to deployment scope, permissions, tenant governance, and maintainability. A custom component may be simple to build but still create long-term support obligations. Document dependencies and avoid embedding secrets or environment-specific values directly in client code. Historical MS-600 study is most useful when it encourages secure platform integration rather than quick samples.
Office add-ins and Teams apps also need a deployment and update story. Decide who can install the solution, how versions will be released, what happens when permissions change, and how users will know that a feature has moved or been retired. Application lifecycle management is part of enterprise development even when the certification objective is framed around building the feature itself.
A final review should include threat modeling. Identify the identities, tokens, APIs, data stores, client surfaces, and external services in the solution. Ask what happens if a token is stolen, a permission is over-broad, an API is unavailable, or untrusted input reaches a message or page. This moves the exercise from certification-era feature knowledge toward modern secure engineering practice.
Consent should also be tested from the administrator's perspective. A developer may know which permission an application requests, but a tenant administrator must decide whether that request is justified. Prepare a short explanation for each high-impact permission in the capstone and describe what data the application can access if the permission is granted.
Logging and telemetry are essential once a Microsoft 365 integration leaves the developer workstation. Record authentication failures, API errors, correlation identifiers where available, and key business events without exposing secrets. A well-instrumented solution is easier to support and safer to change because operators can distinguish a code defect from a service or permission problem.
Credential handling should be explicit in any modernized MS-600-style project. Separate public application identifiers from secrets, certificates, or other credentials, and keep sensitive material out of client-side code and source control. Define how a credential will be rotated and what will happen if it expires or is compromised. This is especially important for background services that use application permissions because the service may retain broad access without an interactive user present. The retired exam’s identity concepts remain useful only when they are applied with current security practices and current Microsoft documentation.
For a capstone, design a fictional employee onboarding application. Authenticate users, read employee and group information, provide a Teams-based experience, use SharePoint or another Microsoft 365 store for collaboration content, and call Microsoft Graph for relevant resources. Add one background process and document which permissions are delegated and which are application-level. Then review the design for least privilege and failure handling.
Current Microsoft certifications can help identify neighboring developer specialties, but the retired MS-600 exam is best understood as a historical record of a cross-service developer role. Its most durable value is the architectural mindset: identity, APIs, host experiences, permissions, and lifecycle management must be designed together.
Do not prepare for MS-600 as though the exam were still open. Use it to understand how Microsoft 365 development was organized and to identify transferable concepts. Then choose current learning or credentials based on the platform you actually develop against. That approach preserves the useful technical depth without turning obsolete certification status into bad guidance.
