MB-335 Supply Chain Expert: What the Retired Exam Covered

MB-335, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant Expert, retired on June 30, 2026. The final Microsoft blueprint focused on advanced product configuration, production prerequisites and costing, discrete/process/lean manufacturing, production control, subcontracting, manufacturing execution, capacity planning, and advanced master-planning scenarios. The MB-335 exam is no longer schedulable, so archived study material should be read as advanced Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management content rather than as a current certification roadmap.

Microsoft had recommended MB-330 knowledge before MB-335 because the expert exam assumed the core supply-chain processes were already familiar. The two exams were not duplicates. MB-330 covered broad operational configuration across products, inventory, procurement, warehouse, transportation, assets, and planning; MB-335 concentrated on more complex manufacturing and product scenarios.

The historical MB-335 expert material therefore remains useful for experienced consultants who need a structured way to review production architecture even though the credential itself has been retired.

Advanced product configuration starts before production is scheduled

The final blueprint included engineering products, product versions, product lifecycle states, configurable products, constraints, and engineering change management. These capabilities address a core manufacturing problem: the product definition itself can evolve while procurement, production, and service processes continue to run. Build a product that has controlled versions and a configuration model, then change a component or rule and determine which orders should use the old versus new definition. This exposes the difference between changing a generic item and managing an engineered product lifecycle. A consultant must preserve traceability so users can explain which design was valid when a particular order was produced. That requirement influences approvals, release policies, bill-of-material structures, and change management.

Production prerequisites encode how the plant is capable of working

Resources, resource groups, calendars, routes, operations, formulas, bills of materials, production units, costing sheets, and production parameters establish the environment in which manufacturing orders execute. Practice by modeling a small production line with constrained machines and labor. Create a route, assign resources, set capacities, and calculate an expected cost. Then change the calendar or resource requirement and observe the scheduling effect. The point is to understand that a production order is not created in a vacuum; it consumes definitions that represent real equipment, time, skills, and cost structures. Scenario questions become easier when each setup object can be tied to an operational constraint or a financial consequence.

Discrete, process, and lean manufacturing solve different production problems. MB-335 explicitly covered several production methods. Discrete manufacturing is appropriate when identifiable units or assemblies move through operations. Process manufacturing emphasizes formulas, co-products, by-products, potency, catch weight, and batch-oriented production. Lean manufacturing uses production flows, kanban, and pull concepts. Build a simple scenario for each method and compare what the system needs to know. A bill of materials and a formula may both describe inputs, but the business meaning and execution rules differ. Likewise, kanban replenishment responds to flow and consumption differently from a traditional scheduled production order. Candidates should be able to select the manufacturing model that fits the product and process rather than forcing every scenario into the method they know best.

Costing links production decisions to financial reality

The final exam included costing versions, cost groups, costing sheets, indirect costs, standard costs, production variances, and cost calculation. These are not finance-only concerns. A manufacturing consultant must understand how material, route, overhead, and production behavior become expected and actual cost. Create a manufactured item, calculate its standard cost, run a production order, and deliberately create a variance by changing material consumption or labor time. Inspect where the difference appears and which configuration explains it. This is also a useful bridge to the current MB-310 Finance domain because production and inventory valuation ultimately feed the financial statements. The expert-level skill is being able to trace the operational cause of a financial result.

Manufacturing execution is about capturing what actually happened. Production scheduling creates a plan; manufacturing execution records reality. Workers start and stop jobs, report quantities, register indirect activities, consume material, record scrap, and complete operations. Configure shop-floor or execution scenarios and compare planned time and quantities with actual results. Then introduce an exception such as rework, partial completion, or unexpected scrap. This exercise demonstrates why production status and reporting rules matter. If actual activity is captured poorly, capacity analysis, inventory, costing, and future planning all become less reliable. MB-335 expected candidates to understand both configuration and shop-floor consequences, not just the planning side of manufacturing.

Subcontracting introduces external capacity into the production flow

A manufacturer may send an operation to a vendor while retaining responsibility for the overall production order. Subcontracting therefore connects production routing, procurement, materials, vendor services, and scheduling. Build a route with one outsourced operation, generate the related purchasing activity, and follow the production order before and after the external step. Determine how materials are supplied, what the vendor is paid for, and how completion is reported. This reveals why subcontracting is not simply a purchase order attached to production. The external service has to fit the sequence and costing of the manufacturing process without losing traceability.

Advanced planning depends on capacity and material assumptions being credible

The final MB-335 outline included advanced master-planning scenarios, production scheduling, capacity planning, delays, and optimization. Use a product with multiple components, alternate resources, lead times, and constrained capacity. Run planning, inspect planned production and purchase orders, then change availability or a resource calendar and rerun the scenario. Compare the system’s proposed response with what the business would expect. Planning output is only as good as the parameters and master data it receives. This is why advanced planning belongs near the end of an expert learning sequence: it exposes weaknesses in product, route, resource, inventory, and supplier configuration that simpler transactions may not reveal.

Retirement changes the credential path, not the value of advanced manufacturing knowledge

Since June 30, 2026, the expert certification and exam are retired. Candidates should follow the current MB-330 Supply Chain Management exam for active certification requirements and use MB-335 content selectively for deeper manufacturing expertise. Do not assume that every MB-335 objective migrated unchanged into a replacement exam; Microsoft retired the credential as part of a wider portfolio shift. The practical knowledge remains highly relevant for organizations that run advanced production in Dynamics 365. Treat the retired blueprint as a detailed technical curriculum and verify current certification requirements separately.

MB-335 is no longer a certification target, but it remains a strong advanced-manufacturing syllabus. Its best use in 2026 is to deepen product, production, costing, execution, subcontracting, and planning expertise beyond the active MB-330 associate scope.

A practical MB-335 capstone is to take one manufactured product through engineering change, costing, planning, production, execution, and variance review. Begin with a released engineering version, modify a component under change control, calculate costs, plan production, schedule constrained resources, report actual labor and material, and analyze the difference from standard expectations. This single scenario touches many of the expert objectives and demonstrates why the exam expected more than familiarity with individual manufacturing features.

Add a second production method to the same study environment. Compare a discrete assembly with a process formula or a lean flow and document which setup objects, costing assumptions, and execution records differ. Then introduce an outsourced operation and track the subcontracting relationship. The purpose is not to build the most complex environment possible; it is to become comfortable selecting the correct manufacturing model for the business process. Expert-level knowledge means recognizing where two superficially similar requirements need different system designs.

The second advanced MB-335 manufacturing scenarios can support historical study, but current certification planning should begin with the active Supply Chain Management associate credential rather than assuming the expert exam still exists. In an implementation role, however, the advanced material remains highly practical. Many production organizations still need consultants who understand engineering change, mixed production modes, costing, subcontracting, shop-floor execution, and constrained planning even though Microsoft no longer validates that combination through MB-335.

Because MB-335 was an expert-level exam, historical study should include design justification, not only configuration execution. For a manufacturing requirement, compare alternate solutions and explain which risks each introduces. A constraint-based product model may be appropriate for one configurable product while engineering versions are more important for another. A subcontracted route can model outsourced capacity, but the purchasing and material-flow implications still need to be understood. This kind of comparative reasoning remains valuable even without the credential because advanced manufacturing projects routinely contain several technically possible designs.

Finally, connect manufacturing results back to broader supply-chain operations. A production delay affects promised sales dates, capacity, warehouse workload, procurement, and possibly financial cost. A quality problem can quarantine material and change planning. An engineering change can invalidate assumptions in procurement or service. The retired exam’s breadth made these relationships explicit. Experienced consultants can use it as a cross-functional review tool to ensure that production configuration is not optimized locally while creating problems elsewhere in the enterprise.

Historical MB-335 questions are especially useful for senior consultants conducting design reviews. Instead of asking only “which setting is correct,” ask whether the proposed production model will still be understandable after engineering changes, whether cost variances can be explained, whether scheduling assumptions are realistic, and whether shop-floor data will support future planning. Those questions preserve the expert intent of the retired credential and keep the material relevant long after the exam itself disappeared.

That expert reasoning also means knowing when complexity is unnecessary. A sophisticated production feature should be selected because it solves a genuine manufacturing requirement, not because it exists. Simpler configuration is often easier to operate, test, explain, and support over the life of the solution.
