MB-260 Customer Insights Data: The Retired Specialist Exam Explained

MB-260, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Insights (Data) Specialist, retired on November 30, 2024. Its final blueprint focused on unifying customer data, creating customer profiles, segmentation, measures, enrichment, AI predictions, administration, privacy, and integrations. The MB-260 exam is therefore no longer a current certification target, but the workload it described remains important wherever organizations use customer data to drive sales, marketing, service, or analytics.

The retirement was part of a broader consolidation of Microsoft’s customer-experience credentials. Customer Insights - Data and Customer Insights - Journeys became increasingly connected, and Microsoft moved the credential model toward the combined MB-280 Customer Experience Analyst path. MB-280 itself retired in July 2026 and was replaced by the newer Dynamics 365 Sales AI Consultant credential. That sequence means old study plans should not simply replace one exam code with another; the role definition changed over time.

For technical learning, however, MB-260 still provides a strong data-lifecycle structure. It asks the right questions: where customer data comes from, how it is transformed, how duplicate identities are reconciled, how a golden profile is built, how segments and measures become actionable, and how privacy and governance constrain every step.

Customer Insights begins with source quality and ingestion choices

The final MB-260 objectives included connecting to source systems, using Power Query, working with Dataverse and Azure data services, and understanding real-time ingestion capabilities. The practical lesson is that unification cannot repair every upstream problem. A source with unstable keys, inconsistent types, missing consent fields, or duplicate records creates ambiguity later in the pipeline. Build a small dataset from several systems—CRM contacts, ecommerce transactions, and support activity—and document the keys and refresh expectations for each. Decide which transformations belong before ingestion and which should happen inside the customer-data platform. Then introduce a schema change and see what breaks. This mirrors real implementation work more closely than memorizing connectors. The objective is to know what assumptions a data source makes and whether those assumptions will still hold when the volume, structure, or refresh cadence changes.

Data unification is an identity-resolution problem. MB-260 placed heavy weight on creating unified customer profiles because this is the core of Customer Insights - Data. Matching rules, normalization, deduplication, source priorities, and conflict resolution determine whether multiple records represent one person, several people, or an uncertain identity. Practice with intentionally messy data: the same customer with different email formats, a changed surname, multiple phone numbers, and separate loyalty and sales identifiers. Create rules that are strict enough to avoid false merges but flexible enough to recognize real duplicates. Then inspect the unified output and explain why each source value won. This develops the reasoning the exam expected. A unified profile is not simply a technical join; it is a governed business assertion that records from different systems belong to the same customer.

Measures and segments convert profiles into business decisions

Once profiles exist, the platform becomes useful through measures and segments. Measures summarize behavior or value; segments define groups that downstream applications can act on. Build metrics such as lifetime revenue, recent engagement, service frequency, or days since last purchase, then create segments that combine profile attributes with those measures. Test boundary conditions. A customer with exactly 90 days since purchase may belong or not belong depending on the business rule. A person with high revenue but unresolved complaints may need a different treatment than an otherwise similar customer. This exercise also shows why the historical connection to MB-220 Customer Insights - Journeys was important: Customer Insights - Data could produce the audience intelligence that journeys used for orchestration.

Enrichment adds context but also introduces provenance questions. Customer Insights - Data supports enrichment and connections that add information beyond the organization’s raw source systems. The exam expected candidates to understand where enrichment fits and how it affects a profile. Treat every enrichment as a new data dependency. What is the source? How fresh is it? What happens when a provider changes coverage? Can the resulting attributes be used for the intended purpose under the organization’s privacy policy? A useful lab is to enrich a profile, incorporate the enrichment into a segment, and then remove or change the enrichment to see which downstream objects depend on it. This develops a healthy skepticism about derived data. More attributes do not automatically create better insight; they create value only when their meaning, quality, lineage, and permitted use are understood.

AI predictions should be judged by the decision they support

The final blueprint included prediction capabilities and expected familiarity with the broader Azure analytics and machine-learning ecosystem. The important skill is not to treat an AI score as an unquestioned fact. Define the business decision first: churn outreach, product recommendation, customer value, or another action. Then examine what data drives the model, what the score means, how often it refreshes, and what threshold should trigger an intervention. Compare the prediction with simpler rules and inspect unusual results. Customer-data teams need to know when a model adds useful signal and when poor data or drift undermines it. That principle remains relevant even as Microsoft’s credential structure changes: AI features are only as trustworthy as the profile, features, governance, and operational feedback that surround them.

Privacy, consent, and security are part of the data model

MB-260 explicitly expected experience with privacy, compliance, consent, security, responsible AI, and data retention. These are not separate governance slides; they alter what the system may ingest, retain, unify, expose, and activate. Map every important field to an owner and a purpose. Decide how long the data should be retained and who should see it. Test what happens when a customer asks for a privacy-related change or when a consent state changes after a profile has already entered a segment. Separating data availability from permitted use is essential. A unified profile can be technically complete while still being inappropriate for a particular activation. Candidates who practice that distinction are better prepared for implementation work than those who focus only on the mechanics of profile creation.

Administration is where a proof of concept becomes a dependable service

A real Customer Insights environment needs refresh monitoring, dependency awareness, access control, error handling, and lifecycle discipline. Build a refresh schedule that reflects the actual source cadence instead of simply choosing the fastest option. Monitor failures and determine whether a problem sits in the source, transformation, unification, measure, or export stage. Document who is responsible for each layer. These operational habits make customer data trustworthy to marketers and sellers. They also connect the retired specialist role to the broader Power Platform ecosystem, because Dataverse, automation, and downstream apps frequently consume the profile and segment outputs produced by Customer Insights.

The certification path moved on, but the data discipline remains current

MB-260 was retired before Microsoft’s later 2026 AI-focused credential redesign. It first fed into the combined MB-280 Customer Experience Analyst direction, which blended sales, Dataverse, and customer-insights work; MB-280 then retired on July 31, 2026. When using old MB-260 material, separate the technical domain from the credential timeline. The data-unification concepts remain useful. The old exam code does not. A practical learning plan should therefore rebuild a small customer-data solution and then consult Microsoft’s current catalog for the appropriate certification objective. That avoids the common mistake of studying an excellent but obsolete blueprint as though it still maps directly to a live exam.

MB-260’s lasting value is its insistence that customer insight starts with data engineering, identity resolution, governance, and measurable activation. Treat the exam as a historical map of that workload and use current Microsoft credentials to validate today’s role expectations.

A strong hands-on project for the MB-260 domain is to create a “golden customer” profile and then try to break it. Load records with conflicting addresses, duplicate email accounts, household relationships, missing identifiers, and transactions that arrive late. Define match and merge behavior, inspect the profile produced, and document which source won for each important attribute. Then change the rule and observe the downstream segment impact. This exercise teaches why identity resolution is not a single feature toggle. It is a business rule system whose mistakes can multiply across personalization, analytics, sales prioritization, and service interactions.

Activation should be tested just as carefully as unification. Export or use a segment in a downstream scenario and confirm that membership, refresh timing, and consent expectations are preserved. If a person leaves the qualifying segment, determine how quickly the destination reflects that change. If a measure is recalculated, determine whether the journey or sales process uses the updated value. This makes the relationship between customer-data processing and customer-facing action visible. It also explains why Microsoft eventually brought the data and journey domains closer together instead of maintaining completely separate certification silos.

For a broader platform view, connect the customer-data solution to the Dynamics 365 Sales context and ask what a seller actually needs from the unified profile. Most users do not need every source field. They need trusted signals, clear provenance, and actionable context. That design discipline—curating what should be activated rather than exposing everything collected—is one of the most durable lessons from the retired MB-260 specialist role.

To close the loop, create a small governance document for the customer profile. Define the source owner for each important attribute, the match rule that can combine identities, the refresh expectation, the retention rule, the permitted downstream uses, and the metric that tells you whether the data is healthy. Then compare that document with the actual environment. This is the kind of discipline that separates a demonstration from a durable customer-data platform. It also helps explain why the MB-260 role required both technical data skills and an understanding of privacy, compliance, and responsible AI.
