JN0-223: The Immediate Predecessor to the Current JNCIA-DevOps Exam

JN0-223 was the Juniper Automation and DevOps, Associate exam immediately before the current JN0-224. Juniper ended JN0-223 on February 16, 2025 and introduced JN0-224 on February 17. That makes JN0-223 much closer to the current track than early versions such as JN0-221, but it is still a retired exam and should not be used as the booking target.

Its value is that the core automation model remains recognizable: Junos automation and DevOps concepts, NETCONF/XML, structured data, Python and PyEZ, templates, RPCs, and REST. Candidates moving from a JN0-223 study plan to JN0-224 should preserve those foundations while updating software versions and checking the current objective wording rather than assuming every detail is unchanged.

The exam is about automating network operations safely

Automation is useful because networks contain repeated tasks: collecting facts, validating configuration, deploying standard policy, checking compliance, and applying changes to groups of devices. The goal is consistent execution and fast feedback. A good workflow makes the desired state explicit and records what happened so the operator can understand success or failure.

Safety requires boundaries. Scripts should handle authentication failure, unreachable devices, rejected configuration, partial completion, and unexpected data. Where possible, changes should be previewed, validated, committed deliberately, and followed by operational verification. The exam rewards understanding of these mechanics more than enthusiasm for automation as an abstract trend.

Automation workflows should also be idempotent where practical: running the same desired-state operation twice should not create repeated or conflicting configuration. Idempotence makes recovery easier because an interrupted process can often be rerun safely after the underlying issue is corrected.

NETCONF and XML avoid fragile screen scraping

Structured management protocols let software interact with configuration and state without pretending to be a human terminal user. NETCONF carries structured requests and responses, while XML represents hierarchical data. XPath helps select parts of that hierarchy. This gives automation a more stable contract than matching columns in CLI output.

Candidates should distinguish configuration data from operational data and understand the life cycle of a change. Retrieve existing state, construct a candidate change, load or edit configuration, validate where appropriate, commit, and verify. That sequence reflects network operations discipline as much as protocol syntax.

NETCONF error handling should be part of labs. Deliberately send an invalid edit, observe the structured error, and decide how the client should respond. This teaches more than a perfect transaction because production automation must distinguish recoverable validation problems from transport or authentication failures.

YAML and JSON are small topics with large practical impact

Serialization formats appear throughout automation systems because they move configuration data and API payloads between humans, programs, and services. YAML is common in configuration files and templates; JSON is common in web APIs. Both can describe nested objects and lists, but they have different syntax and error patterns.

A candidate should be comfortable reading data structures and predicting how a program will access them. Many automation failures originate not in a complicated algorithm but in a wrong key, unexpected list, missing value, or incorrect type. Basic data literacy is therefore central to reliable network automation.

JSON and YAML should also be validated against expected schema or at least explicit checks in code. A typo that silently produces a new key can be more dangerous than a syntax error because the file may parse successfully while the intended value is never used.

Python should express the workflow clearly

Associate-level Python skills should support network tasks: iterate over devices, branch on state, call functions, parse data, handle exceptions, and use libraries. Readability matters because automation code becomes operational infrastructure. A concise script that no one can safely modify is a maintenance risk.

Candidates should practice turning a manual procedure into a sequence of functions. For example: connect, collect facts, verify preconditions, render a change, load it, compare, commit, validate post-change state, and record the result. Thinking in stages makes both code and troubleshooting easier.

Python functions make network workflows easier to test. A function that renders configuration can be tested independently from a function that opens a device session. Separating concerns reduces the chance that troubleshooting one stage requires rerunning an entire production change.

PyEZ reduces boilerplate but does not remove Junos knowledge

Junos PyEZ abstracts device connections and many configuration or RPC operations. It can retrieve device facts, use tables and views, load configuration, and manage commits. These capabilities make it faster to build automation, but they depend on the same underlying Junos concepts an engineer would use manually.

A learner who needs more device context can use the current JN0-106 Junos Associate material as a foundation. It is not a prerequisite for JNCIA-DevOps, but understanding Junos hierarchy, configuration behavior, and operational commands makes automated outcomes easier to interpret.

PyEZ commit workflows can use compare and rollback concepts to make changes reviewable. Candidates should understand why a diff before commit is useful and why a rollback plan should exist before the first device is changed. Automation speed makes these safeguards more important, not less.

Templates separate reusable structure from variable data

Jinja2 can render standard configuration using site-specific or device-specific variables. This is powerful because the same template can produce many consistent configurations, but only if the input data is trustworthy. Validation of IP addresses, interface names, identifiers, and required fields should occur before a template is pushed to devices.

The best templates are intentionally limited. If a template contains too much conditional logic, it becomes difficult to review and test. Separate templates or functions can make differences explicit and reduce the chance that one universal template silently produces an inappropriate configuration.

Template data should come from a trusted source of truth whenever possible. If site addressing is copied manually into multiple spreadsheets and YAML files, automation can reproduce the same inconsistency at scale. Centralizing authoritative data reduces drift and makes generated configuration easier to audit.

REST APIs extend automation beyond one device library

REST interactions teach candidates a more general automation pattern: identify a resource, authenticate, send an HTTP method, provide a structured payload when needed, and interpret the status code and response. cURL is useful for learning because it exposes the raw interaction and helps isolate whether a problem is in the API or in application code.

This pattern also appears in controllers, cloud platforms, inventory systems, and monitoring products. Network automation increasingly combines several APIs, so understanding the fundamentals of REST helps engineers build workflows that coordinate devices with the systems around them.

REST troubleshooting should separate transport, authentication, authorization, resource path, payload, and application logic. Testing the endpoint with cURL before embedding it in a Python workflow is a simple way to isolate layers and shorten debugging time.

The migration to JN0-224 is a version-and-blueprint exercise

Juniper’s current JN0-224 exam lists Junos 24.2, Python 3.8.10, and PyEZ 2.6.3. A JN0-223 study resource can still be useful for the underlying concepts, but candidates should verify whether examples depend on older software behavior. The safest preparation plan uses the current JN0-224 exam page as the checklist and treats JN0-223 as supplemental background.

The broader set of Juniper certifications also shows that JNCIA-DevOps is only one track. Automation skills can support cloud, data center, security, and routing work, but the exam remains specifically focused on Junos automation and DevOps foundations. Keeping that scope clear prevents study plans from expanding into unrelated tooling.

When moving to JN0-224, candidates should also refresh their lab environment. Current Junos behavior, Python package versions, and library interfaces may differ from older examples even when the conceptual task is identical. A clean modern lab prevents time being spent debugging obsolete dependencies instead of learning automation.

JN0-223 preparation also benefited from thinking in terms of blast radius. A script that touches one lab router can be debugged casually; the same logic targeting hundreds of production devices requires prechecks, batching, stop conditions, and clear rollback. Automation maturity is largely the practice of controlling that blast radius while preserving the speed benefits of repeatable workflows.

Another useful migration exercise is to compare JN0-223 examples with the software versions named for JN0-224. Run representative NETCONF, PyEZ, template, and REST tasks and record any library, syntax, or response differences. This creates a focused update list and prevents candidates from discarding sound automation concepts merely because a particular example was written for an older release.

Candidates should also practice separating discovery from change. One automation pass can collect facts, software versions, interface state, and compliance data without modifying anything. A later change pass can operate only on devices that satisfy preconditions. This separation reduces risk because the workflow can identify exceptions before configuration begins and can produce a reviewable target list for the operator.

Operational verification should be specific to the change. If automation modifies a routing policy, verify route selection and adjacency state; if it changes an interface, verify link, address, and reachability; if it updates access policy, verify permitted and denied paths. Generic “device reachable” checks are not enough to prove that the intended service outcome was achieved.
