NSE7-PBC-7-2 was the Fortinet Public Cloud Security 7.2 exam and course generation. Fortinet’s archived training describes the 7.2 course as an older version and highlights FortiGate virtual-machine deployment in public cloud, third-party automation, AWS SD-WAN Connect with Transit Gateway, Azure deployment troubleshooting, and FortiCNP for AWS workload risk. Those details make the 7.2 material a well-documented bridge between early virtual-firewall deployment and the current multi-product public-cloud architecture.
Fortinet now lists NSE 7 Public Cloud Security 7.6.4 Architect as available. Its current scope extends the same ideas through AWS and Azure integrations, FortiWeb, FortiCNAPP, infrastructure automation, monitoring, and troubleshooting. The earlier Public Cloud Security 6.4 page provides historical context, while 7.2 is particularly useful for studying how transit networking and infrastructure as code became core cloud-security skills.
Before choosing instance sizes or templates, define which traffic must traverse Fortinet controls. Internet ingress, internet egress, application-to-application flows, branch-to-cloud traffic, partner connections, and management access may require different paths. A single “firewall subnet” does not explain how those packets are steered.
For each path, identify the cloud route table, gateway or transit service, FortiGate interface, NAT behavior, and return route. The diagram should make bypasses obvious. If an application subnet can reach the internet through a native gateway without crossing the intended inspection point, the security architecture is incomplete even if the firewall itself is configured perfectly.
Keep cloud-native controls in the model. Security groups, identity policies, load balancers, and provider logging can constrain exposure before traffic reaches the firewall and supply context that FortiGate does not own.
Fortinet’s 7.2 training specifically called out AWS SD-WAN Connect and AWS Transit Gateway. In a transit design, connectivity between VPCs, branches, and inspection networks is influenced by several route tables and attachments. The security team needs to know which component owns reachability and where traffic is intentionally redirected.
Test east-west and north-south paths separately. A VPC may correctly send outbound internet traffic through inspection while inter-VPC traffic takes a direct transit route. Route-table association and propagation decisions can therefore become security decisions, not just connectivity choices.
Failure testing should include loss of an inspection appliance or tunnel and withdrawal of a route. Observe whether traffic fails closed, moves to another inspected path, or accidentally follows a bypass. Resilience should not undermine the intended security boundary.
Azure environments can combine virtual networks, subnets, user-defined routes, network security groups, load balancers, gateways, and virtual appliances. When a workload cannot communicate, it is tempting to change the FortiGate policy first. A better method proves whether the packet reached the appliance and which Azure controls acted before and after it.
Use effective routes and security rules together with FortiGate packet capture, routing, and sessions. A route can send traffic to the correct next hop while an NSG denies it earlier. Conversely, Azure can deliver the packet to FortiGate, but the return route or firewall policy may be wrong.
High availability adds another control path because the cloud platform may need to update routes or load-balancer state when the active appliance changes. Validate those changes under failure rather than assuming a healthy cluster status guarantees application recovery.
The 7.2 course emphasized third-party automation because cloud security environments are frequently rebuilt and scaled. Terraform can describe infrastructure resources and their relationships, while Ansible can help configure systems after they exist. The exact division varies, but both approaches work best when the desired state is versioned and peer reviewed.
Use modules and variables to separate architecture from environment-specific values. Secrets should be supplied through secure mechanisms rather than committed to templates. Pin versions where practical and review provider or module changes before applying them to production.
Plan output deserves security review. A change that replaces an interface, modifies a transit route, or broadens a security group can alter the inspection path even if the template change looks small. Automation should make change impact more visible, not simply make it faster.
SDN connectors and cloud APIs allow Fortinet policy and visibility to use changing workload information rather than fixed IP addresses. That is valuable in elastic environments, but it creates dependency on API credentials, permissions, tags, network reachability, and provider behavior.
Give each integration only the privileges it requires. Monitor connector failures and determine what policy does when data becomes stale. If a dynamic object remains populated indefinitely after the source disappears, access may persist longer than intended; if it disappears immediately, a transient API outage may block legitimate traffic.
This is a practical example of cloud security responsibility: automation and APIs reduce manual work, but the customer still owns the correctness of permissions, tagging, routes, and policy built on top of them.
The archived 7.2 course mentions FortiCNP as a way to simplify risk management for AWS workloads. Current Fortinet training uses FortiCNAPP in the 7.6.4 architecture. The product naming and capability set evolved, but the architectural direction is clear: public-cloud security is not only packet inspection. Configuration risk, workload posture, and cloud context increasingly inform prioritization.
Use posture findings to improve decisions rather than creating another disconnected alert queue. A publicly reachable workload with a known vulnerability and sensitive data should be prioritized differently from an isolated test instance. The network-security layer can then enforce segmentation or access changes based on a broader understanding of workload risk.
Ownership matters because posture remediation may belong to application, cloud-platform, or DevOps teams rather than the firewall team. A useful finding includes the affected resource, evidence, consequence, and an actionable owner.
Public cloud incident analysis often requires FortiGate logs, provider flow logs, API audit events, identity events, load-balancer records, and application telemetry. Time synchronization and consistent resource naming make that correlation possible. Without them, analysts can see symptoms but struggle to connect them to the infrastructure change that caused the exposure.
Prioritize alerts that map to architectural assumptions: a route bypassing inspection, a security group opened to the internet, an administrator changing a connector role, disabled logging, or unexpected traffic between protected segments. These events are more meaningful than generic log volume because they describe a security boundary changing.
Preserve infrastructure history alongside firewall revisions. When an outage or incident follows a deployment, compare the automation plan, cloud audit log, route state, FortiGate configuration, and session evidence for the same time window.
High availability needs to be validated against cloud-native failure behavior. Test instance loss, zone loss, route update delay, API permission failure, and a load-balancer health-check problem separately. The appliance pair may be healthy while the provider control plane fails to redirect traffic, so both Fortinet and cloud telemetry belong in the same failover test record.
Bootstrapping and license activation should also be reproducible. A replacement FortiGate that launches successfully but cannot retrieve configuration, register licensing, or reach management is not a recovered security service. Store bootstrap logic as reviewed code and test it after major image or platform changes.
Cloud identity is part of the network-security architecture because automation and connectors act through service principals, roles, or instance identities. Grant only the permissions required for route changes, discovery, logging, or workload access. Review unused privileges after deployment, especially when early proof-of-concept roles were intentionally broad.
Container and platform services can create traffic that bypasses assumptions built for virtual machines. When the environment introduces managed Kubernetes, serverless functions, private endpoints, or platform-as-a-service databases, revisit the inspection path instead of assuming the existing subnet design still sees all relevant flows.
Operational runbooks should name the authoritative source for each kind of change. Infrastructure code may own routes and instances, FortiManager may own firewall configuration, and cloud consoles may still be used for emergency recovery. Without that ownership model, teams can fix an outage manually only to have automation revert the repair on the next deployment.
Fortinet’s current 7.6.4 Architect exam is a 75-minute assessment with 35–40 questions and product versions centered on FortiOS 7.6 and FortiWeb 7.4. It evaluates applied public-cloud design and administration, including deployment methods, native integrations, Terraform, Ansible, Bicep or CloudFormation-style automation, AWS and Azure monitoring, SDN connector troubleshooting, and FortiCNAPP context.
A strong transition lab begins with the 7.2 themes: FortiGate VMs, AWS transit routing, Azure path troubleshooting, and infrastructure as code. Then add current elements such as FortiWeb and workload-risk context. Break an SDN connector, remove a route, or change a security group and require yourself to identify the failure from both cloud and Fortinet evidence.
NSE7-PBC-7-2 is no longer the current exam target, but it remains an unusually useful historical blueprint because so much of its architecture survives in the present track. Candidates should use Fortinet certifications for registration and current-version study while retaining the 7.2 discipline of treating networking, automation, native cloud services, and security policy as one system.
Version control should include operational documentation alongside code. When a route model, connector permission, or failover mechanism changes, update the diagram and runbook in the same change. Troubleshooting becomes much faster when the architecture document describes what is actually deployed rather than the original design from several releases ago.
