SASE 26 Architect: Fortinet’s Integrated FortiSASE and SD-WAN Design Exam

NSE7-SSE-AR-26 is the current Fortinet NSE 7 SASE 26 Architect exam. Fortinet describes it as an advanced assessment of designing, deploying, operating, and troubleshooting FortiSASE together with Fortinet SD-WAN. The current exam page lists 75 minutes, 40–50 questions, English delivery, and product coverage centered on FortiSASE 26 with FortiOS 7.4 and 7.6.

The exam also reflects Fortinet’s July 2026 certification redesign. The older FortiSASE 25 Enterprise Administrator exam ended on July 15, while the new NSE 7 architecture model expects broader cross-domain reasoning. Since September 21, 2026, NSE 7 exams are delivered through Pearson VUE-authorized testing centers rather than OnVUE remote delivery, so candidates should confirm logistics as well as objectives before scheduling.

The exam treats SASE and SD-WAN as one distributed architecture

The central design idea is integration. FortiSASE provides cloud-delivered security and access services, while SD-WAN controls how branch and edge traffic reaches those services, private applications, data centers, and the internet. Treating them as separate products can produce duplicated policy, asymmetric routing, and poor visibility across the user journey.

A design should classify users and locations before configuring anything. Remote users, office users, small branches, large branches, private applications, SaaS destinations, and public internet traffic may need different paths and controls. The architecture must explain which traffic enters FortiSASE, which uses direct breakout, which traverses SD-WAN overlays, and how those decisions change during failure.

The earlier FortiSASE 25 Enterprise Administrator material helps explain the operational foundation, but the architect scope is wider. It asks how the service behaves across multiple regions, branch topologies, endpoint states, identity systems, and management platforms.

Multiregion SD-WAN design requires explicit routing intent

Distributed organizations may use several hubs, cloud regions, or security points of presence. The architecture must prevent route ambiguity as traffic moves between those locations. BGP policy, VRFs, overlay structure, path attributes, and route propagation determine whether a branch reaches the right region or takes an unnecessary detour.

Zero-touch provisioning improves scale only if the bootstrap path is reliable and secure. A new branch needs enough information to establish management connectivity, receive its intended blueprint, build overlays, learn routes, and enforce security policy. Test what happens when the device appears in the wrong region or receives incomplete metadata.

Multiregion designs should also include a failure map. If one hub disappears, determine which routes move, whether sessions survive, whether the alternate path has enough capacity, and whether security inspection remains consistent. A diagram that shows redundancy without proving convergence is incomplete.

Advanced SD-WAN combines steering, routing, and application behavior

The current architect objectives include rule strategies, application steering, routing interactions, session behavior, BGP, and advanced IPsec overlays. Those mechanisms are not independent. A routing change can alter member eligibility, a health check can change steering, and an existing session may continue on a path after the control plane has selected a new preference.

Build troubleshooting exercises around the whole chain. Start with an application that should use one path, degrade that path, and observe the health-check result, route state, SD-WAN decision, session table, and application recovery. Then repeat with an established session so the difference between new-flow selection and existing state becomes visible.

SD-WAN 7.6 Architect remains useful technical context because many of the advanced overlay and routing concepts continue inside the current SASE architecture exam.

IPsec and ADVPN must support scale without hiding failure

Large SD-WAN overlays often rely on IPsec for secure transport and ADVPN for dynamic spoke-to-spoke optimization. The architect must understand both the security negotiation and the route/session consequences of shortcuts. A tunnel being up does not prove that the application has a valid return path or acceptable MTU.

Dual-hub and multiregion designs create more transition states. A spoke may move between hubs, form a shortcut, or retain a stale route during convergence. Test tunnel establishment, route installation, shortcut creation, and failback separately so that one green status indicator does not conceal a broken dependency.

Packet size, NAT, and asymmetry deserve deliberate tests. Encrypted paths add overhead, and branch internet circuits may have different MTUs or provider behavior. Use representative traffic and captures rather than relying on ICMP alone.

FortiSASE architecture connects users, endpoints, identity, and applications

Cloud-delivered security is only useful if the identity and endpoint context is reliable. FortiSASE policies can consider user groups, endpoint profiles, posture tags, application identity, and access method. That creates powerful controls, but it also means a single user problem may originate in the identity provider, endpoint agent, posture logic, policy match, or network path.

Secure internet access and Secure Private Access should be modeled separately. Internet traffic needs consistent inspection and acceptable egress behavior. Private applications need narrowly scoped access, correct DNS and identity dependencies, and reliable reachability to the application environment. Combining both into one generic “SASE policy” makes troubleshooting harder.

Zero trust network access is most effective when the policy expresses the business relationship: which user on which kind of device can reach which application under what conditions. A useful conceptual supplement is the discussion of SASE and zero-trust architecture, even though the implementation details differ by vendor.

Endpoint posture and access control need recoverable failure modes

Posture checks should improve security without creating opaque lockouts. If a device is noncompliant, the user and support team should know what failed and what action restores compliance. Test expired certificates, outdated agents, missing security controls, and intermittent connectivity to the posture service.

Agent-based and agentless access have different visibility and control. The architecture should define where each is appropriate and what compensating controls are required when the endpoint cannot provide the same level of telemetry. Do not assume a browser-based path carries the same device context as a managed FortiClient endpoint.

Endpoint decisions should be logged with enough context to reconstruct them later. When access changes because a posture tag changed, the investigation should identify the source signal, the policy that consumed it, and the exact time the decision was made.

Centralized management and analytics should reduce mean time to explanation

FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer can connect configuration intent with operational evidence. The architect should use that relationship deliberately: management templates express expected state, while logs and analytics show what actually happened. A troubleshooting workflow is stronger when it can compare the two rather than looking at device output in isolation.

Changes across branches and SASE policy should have a clear owner, timestamp, and validation step. If a global template and a cloud policy change at the same time, an incident becomes harder to isolate. Stage complex changes so the effect of each layer remains observable.

Metrics should focus on user and service outcomes as well as infrastructure. Tunnel status and member health are necessary, but digital experience, application latency, authentication success, policy denials, and recurring endpoint failures reveal whether the architecture is actually usable.

Current preparation should mirror the cross-domain exam scope

Fortinet’s current exam description spans SD-WAN architecture, routing, advanced IPsec, FortiSASE architecture and integration, secure access, endpoint posture, centralized management, visibility, and troubleshooting. Preparation should therefore use scenarios that cross those boundaries instead of studying each topic as an isolated chapter.

The lower-level SASE path has already moved to FortiSASE and SD-WAN 26 Core Administrator, released July 29, 2026. The earlier FortiSASE and SD-WAN 7.6 Core Administrator remains deliverable only through November 14, 2026, while the SD-WAN 7.6 Enterprise Administrator exam ended on July 15. Both remain useful for operational mechanics, and the related Secure Networking 7.6 Architect exam helps clarify where the SASE path overlaps with broader routing and firewall architecture.

A strong final lab includes remote users, at least two branches, multiple WAN paths, a private application, identity and endpoint posture, centralized management, and a planned set of failures. Document why every path and policy exists. That approach also reflects how current Fortinet certifications connect administration, secure networking, and SASE architecture while keeping the exam’s emphasis on applied architectural reasoning.

MSSP and multi-tenant scenarios add another layer of design. Shared operational teams need separation of customers, roles, logs, policy ownership, and change authority. A configuration that is technically reusable across tenants may still be inappropriate if it weakens administrative boundaries or creates ambiguous incident ownership.

Data sovereignty should be evaluated during architecture, not after rollout. The location of inspection, logs, identities, and private applications can matter for contractual or regulatory reasons. Map these constraints to points of presence and management systems before choosing the “closest” or lowest-latency path.

Architects also need an upgrade strategy. FortiSASE, FortiOS, FortiClient, and management components do not always change at the same time. Test compatibility, stage representative users and branches, and document which combinations are supported during transition. An architecture is incomplete if it works only when every component is upgraded simultaneously.

For exam preparation, explain every design choice aloud. Why is this traffic using SIA rather than local breakout? Why is this branch using a particular overlay? Why does this user match this posture rule? The ability to justify the decision is a stronger readiness signal than remembering the location of a setting.

Cost and operational ownership should be evaluated alongside technical elegance. More points of presence, dedicated addresses, richer logging, and additional integration can improve control but also increase service complexity and support requirements. The architect should be able to explain which features materially reduce risk or improve user experience and which are unnecessary for the use case.

During review, compare the intended architecture with observed traffic at several layers. A diagram may claim one path while logs and sessions reveal another. The ability to reconcile design documentation with live behavior is one of the clearest signs that the candidate understands the system as an architecture rather than as a collection of features.
