AWS DVA-C02 Developer Associate: Current Exam Skills and the DVA-C03 Transition

AWS Certified Developer – Associate is in an active transition. As of September 29, 2026, DVA-C02 remains the current exam. AWS’s September 1 certification-update post says November 30, 2026 is the last day to take DVA-C02, while the current certification page says December 1, 2026. Registration for DVA-C03 opens October 27. Because those first-party pages differ by one day, candidates near the cutoff should confirm the live booking calendar rather than rely on either date in isolation.

DVA-C02 validates application development with AWS services, security, deployment, troubleshooting, and optimization. The upcoming DVA-C03 keeps the same four domain families while modernizing them for current developer work, including AI-assisted development and managed AI integrations. AWS explicitly says prompt engineering, RAG architecture, model selection, SageMaker AI, and AI-governance design are out of scope for DVA-C03, so this remains a developer certification rather than a generative-AI specialist exam.

The certification relationship is AWS Certified Developer – Associate within Amazon AWS certifications. For the current version, the DVA-C02 preparation supports study planning, while the current exam page itself should remain the authority for the final testing window.

AWS development means using managed services through APIs, events, and SDKs

DVA-C02 expects developers to build applications that interact correctly with AWS services rather than simply deploy conventional code onto EC2. That includes SDK use, event-driven design, Lambda, API Gateway, queues, notifications, object storage, databases, and service integrations. The key question is often how to achieve a behavior with the least custom infrastructure while preserving reliability and security.

Event-driven systems require careful thought about retries, duplicate delivery, timeouts, and idempotency. A Lambda function that processes the same event twice should not create a duplicate financial transaction. A queue consumer must distinguish transient dependency failures from messages that will never succeed without correction.

Developers should also recognize service quotas and throttling as normal design constraints. SDK retry behavior, exponential backoff, jitter, batching, and concurrency limits can determine whether an application survives a traffic spike. Retrying every failure immediately can amplify an outage by creating a self-inflicted request storm.

Serverless application design combines execution, APIs, messaging, and state

AWS Lambda is central to many developer scenarios, but knowing its name is not enough. Candidates should understand event sources, concurrency, environment configuration, cold starts, permissions, retries, dead-letter behavior, versions, aliases, and how functions integrate with API Gateway, SQS, SNS, EventBridge, Step Functions, and data stores.

The Lambda and API Gateway workflow is useful because it connects request handling, authorization, integration, and backend execution. Good designs choose asynchronous messaging when work should be decoupled and synchronous calls only when the caller genuinely needs an immediate result.

Lambda concurrency should be considered at both function and account level. Reserved concurrency can protect a critical function or prevent one workload from consuming the entire pool, while downstream databases or APIs may still become bottlenecks. Scaling one layer without protecting dependencies simply moves the failure elsewhere.

DynamoDB and other data stores should be approached from access patterns

Developers working with Amazon DynamoDB should understand partition keys, sort keys, secondary indexes, conditional writes, consistency choices, transactions, TTL, streams, and capacity behavior in DynamoDB. The goal is to model the application around known query patterns rather than recreate a relational schema in a service designed for different strengths.

Other workloads may fit S3, RDS, ElastiCache, or search services better. DVA questions often provide operational clues: a need for millisecond key access, durable object storage, relational transactions, or fast cached reads. Map the requirement to the data model first, then choose the service.

Application security starts with identity boundaries and short-lived credentials

Developers should prefer IAM roles and temporary credentials to embedding access keys in source code. Authentication and authorization may involve IAM, Cognito, resource policies, API authorization, signed requests, or service-specific controls. The principle is consistent: grant only what the component needs and keep trust boundaries explicit.

Secrets and encryption should also be managed services problems where possible. Secrets Manager and Systems Manager Parameter Store can remove sensitive values from code and deployment files, while KMS supports controlled encryption keys. The application still needs correct permissions, rotation handling, and error behavior when secrets or keys are unavailable.

Deployment should make change repeatable, observable, and reversible

CI/CD pipelines package artifacts, run tests, deploy changes, and provide evidence about what moved into an environment. CodePipeline and related developer tools can coordinate these stages. The AWS CodePipeline workflow illustrates why source, build, test, approval, and deployment stages should be treated as one controlled delivery process.

Blue/green, canary, rolling, and versioned serverless deployments reduce risk in different ways. Candidates should connect the strategy to rollback speed and blast radius. A deployment model that exposes every user immediately is inappropriate when the application needs staged validation under real traffic.

Artifact integrity matters throughout delivery. Builds should produce immutable, identifiable artifacts rather than rebuilding different code during each environment promotion. That makes rollback faster and improves traceability because the exact package tested in one stage is the package promoted to the next.

Observability is part of development because application behavior must be diagnosable

Metrics, structured logs, traces, correlation identifiers, and alarms let developers see what happened across distributed services. CloudWatch and X-Ray can reveal latency, errors, downstream calls, and retries, but telemetry needs useful context. A log entry saying “failed” without an operation identifier or request context is weak evidence.

Performance optimization should follow measurements. Increase memory or concurrency when the data supports that change, not because it is easy. Caching, batch size, connection reuse, payload size, database access patterns, and network placement can all influence application behavior.

Troubleshooting questions reward understanding of service interaction

DVA scenarios often combine several services and then describe one symptom. An API may return an authorization error because the caller lacks permission, the execution role is wrong, a resource policy denies access, or the application is using the wrong identity. The same symptom can have multiple causes, so inspect the trust path instead of guessing from the HTTP status alone.

Retries can also create side effects. If a queue redelivers a message after a timeout, the consumer should handle duplicate work safely. If a downstream service throttles requests, exponential backoff and jitter may be appropriate. Reliable cloud applications assume partial failure and make recovery an explicit behavior.

Configuration mistakes can look like code bugs. A Lambda function might fail because an environment variable points to the wrong table, a KMS key blocks decryption, a VPC configuration removes internet access, or the execution role lacks one API action. Strong debugging checks deployment configuration and identity alongside application code.

DVA-C02 and DVA-C03 share a developer core even as tooling evolves

AWS says DVA-C03 keeps the same four domain percentages while modernizing skill statements. That means DVA-C02 preparation in service-based development, security, deployment, testing, troubleshooting, and optimization remains useful. The transition adds more emphasis on how modern developers use AI-assisted tools and integrate managed AI capabilities without turning the exam into an ML engineering test.

If you are already close to ready, the remaining DVA-C02 window may be reasonable. If you are starting from the beginning and want the most current blueprint, waiting for DVA-C03 material on October 27 can reduce the risk of preparing for an exam whose delivery window is almost closed. Near the final cutoff, use AWS’s live scheduling system because AWS’s current web pages disagree by one day on the final DVA-C02 test date.

Prepare by building one application through its entire delivery lifecycle

Create a small application with an API, Lambda functions, a data store, asynchronous messaging, authentication, secrets, tests, deployment automation, and observability. Introduce failures deliberately: revoke a permission, exceed a timeout, create a duplicate message, deploy a bad version, or throttle a dependency. Then diagnose the problem from evidence.

Use the DVA-C02 preparation experience for practical study perspective, but make the current AWS timeline your scheduling authority. Hands-on familiarity with application behavior will survive the version change better than memorized console paths.

Keep the application small enough that you can rebuild it from scratch. Repeat the deployment in a second environment using the same templates and pipeline. If the second environment needs undocumented manual steps, the project has revealed a delivery weakness worth fixing before exam day.

Application configuration should be externalized from code so the same artifact can move across environments without recompilation. Environment variables, Parameter Store, AppConfig, and secrets services solve different parts of that problem. Configuration changes should be validated and observable because a bad value can break an otherwise correct deployment.

Developers also need to understand asynchronous error paths. SQS visibility timeouts, Lambda retry behavior, dead-letter queues, partial batch responses, and idempotency determine whether failed work is lost, duplicated, or safely retried. Many exam scenarios become straightforward once you ask what happens to the message after the first attempt fails.

Caching is another area where requirements matter. API Gateway caches, CloudFront, ElastiCache, and application-level caches solve different problems. Developers should understand expiration, invalidation, consistency, and what data must never be cached broadly. A cache can reduce latency and cost while also serving stale or sensitive data if boundaries are poorly designed.

A final DVA-C02 review should include service failure semantics: which operations are synchronous, which are event-driven, where retries happen automatically, and where the application must implement its own resilience. This prevents a common mistake of assuming that every managed service handles failures the same way.
