5V0-61-22: Integrating Workspace ONE Across Identity and Access

The VMware Workspace ONE 21.X Advanced Integration Specialist (5V0-61-22) exam focused on the points where endpoint management, identity, authentication, certificates, applications, and enterprise services meet. It belonged to VMware’s End-User Computing portfolio, which later moved to Omnissa. Broadcom stopped delivering EUC exams and credentials in July 2024, and Omnissa has since retired the old Specialist model in favor of newer administrator and engineer credentials. The code is therefore legacy in 2026, even though the integration problems it represented remain current.

Integration work is difficult because each system can be healthy by itself while the combined workflow fails. Directory synchronization can succeed while a SAML application rejects the assertion. A certificate can be issued while the device does not trust the root. UEM enrollment can be complete while Workspace ONE Access applies the wrong authentication policy. The exam’s real value is learning to trace identity and device context across these boundaries.

Directory integration establishes the identity source

Workspace ONE deployments often depend on enterprise directory services for users, groups, attributes, and authentication. A connector or directory integration must be able to reach the source, bind with appropriate permissions, synchronize the expected objects, and map attributes consistently. Group membership is especially important because it often controls application entitlements or policy assignment.

When synchronization fails, separate connection failure from mapping failure. If no users arrive, investigate connectivity, credentials, base DN or search scope, and connector health. If users arrive with missing or incorrect attributes, inspect mapping and source data. If existing users work but newly added group members do not, check synchronization schedule and whether the relevant group is included. Identity troubleshooting becomes much easier when each stage has a clear expected output.

SAML and federation require agreement about every identity field

A federated application relies on trust between the identity provider and service provider. Entity identifiers, assertion consumer service URLs, signing certificates, NameID formats, and attributes have to agree. A small mismatch can produce a generic login failure even when both systems are operational. Advanced integration therefore requires the administrator to read metadata and assertions instead of guessing from the end-user error.

Just-in-time provisioning adds another layer. If the target application is expected to create a user on first login, the assertion must contain the right identifying attributes and the application must accept them. Group-based entitlement should be tested with users who are inside and outside the intended group. An integration is not complete merely because one administrator account can sign in successfully.

Authentication policy should reflect context, not just credentials

Workspace ONE Access can make authentication decisions based on network range, device state, user population, authentication method, and other context. That creates a powerful policy engine, but it also creates ordering and exception risks. A broad rule placed too high can prevent a more specific rule from applying, while an overly permissive fallback can undermine the stronger method the design intended.

For each access rule, document who it applies to, from where, under what device conditions, and which authentication method is expected. Then test boundary cases: unmanaged devices, users outside the group, remote networks, expired certificates, and unavailable identity providers. Context-aware access is only reliable when administrators know exactly which rule matched and why.

Certificates bridge device management with network and application trust

Certificate-based authentication is common for Wi-Fi, VPN, email, and identity workflows because it binds access to managed device state without relying only on reusable passwords. UEM can request and deliver certificates through integrations with enterprise certificate authorities, while Access and other services can use certificates as an authentication factor or trust signal.

The integration path includes more than issuing a certificate. The correct subject and SAN values must be populated, the device must trust the issuing chain, renewal has to occur before expiry, revocation must remove trust promptly, and the target service must map the certificate identity to the correct user. The digital certificates and PKI material provides useful background for understanding why one missing trust relationship can break an otherwise correct Workspace ONE workflow.

UEM and Access integration creates a combined user-and-device decision

The value of integrating Workspace ONE UEM with Workspace ONE Access is the ability to combine user identity with device posture and managed state. A user may have valid credentials but still be restricted because the endpoint is not enrolled, does not meet compliance, or lacks a required management profile. Conversely, a managed device should not grant access without a valid user identity.

Troubleshooting should therefore verify the synchronization of device state as well as user state. Ask whether the device is known to UEM, whether compliance is current, whether Access can see the expected state, and whether the application policy actually consumes that information. Stale posture data can create confusing outcomes where the device looks compliant in one console but the access decision still reflects an older state.

Enterprise services introduce network and protocol dependencies

Secure email gateways, tunneling, content gateways, and reverse-proxy patterns connect managed endpoints to services that may live behind firewalls or in private networks. These components rely on DNS, certificates, ports, routing, authentication, and service-specific configuration. Advanced integration candidates need to understand the traffic path, not just the console wizard used to create it.

When a user can enroll but cannot reach an internal service, trace the request from endpoint to tunnel or gateway, through the network, and into the application. Determine where TLS terminates, which certificate is presented, which identity is forwarded, and whether the return path is valid. If the design includes per-app tunneling, verify that the affected application is actually associated with the tunnel profile and that other applications are not being routed unintentionally.

Integration change control must account for multiple owners

A directory change may be owned by identity engineering, a certificate template by PKI administrators, a SAML application by the SaaS team, and a tunnel by network security. Workspace ONE administrators often coordinate rather than own every dependency. That makes change records, versioned configuration, test accounts, and clear rollback steps especially important.

Before changing a federation certificate or attribute mapping, identify every application that depends on it. Before rotating a connector certificate, confirm the trust chain at both ends. Before changing a UEM compliance signal used by Access, understand which applications rely on that signal. Integration outages often come from changes that were locally correct but globally uncoordinated.

The modern certification context is Omnissa

Omnissa is the right place to look for present-day Workspace ONE credentials. Omnissa’s learning program states that legacy Specialist exams have been retired and that newer OCA and OCE credentials cover current administration and engineering. The old 5V0-61-22 code should not be treated as a current VMware exam simply because archived preparation material remains online.

The durable preparation method is to build one complete access journey. Synchronize a user, enroll a device, issue a certificate, assign an application, federate authentication, apply a compliance condition, and reach a protected service. Then break one dependency at a time. Capture what the user sees, what each console reports, and which log or assertion proves where the failure occurs. That method survives product renaming because it is built around the transaction rather than the UI.

Advanced integration is ultimately about contracts between systems. Each side expects a protocol, identity, certificate, route, attribute, or state signal in a particular form. The specialist who can state those contracts explicitly can validate them quickly; the specialist who relies on wizard defaults has fewer clues when something changes. That is the lasting lesson of 5V0-61-22.

Attribute governance becomes especially important when several SaaS applications consume the same identity source. One application may expect email as NameID, another may require an immutable identifier, and a certificate template may rely on user principal name. Changing a directory attribute to solve one integration can silently break another. Maintain a mapping register that shows which downstream services depend on each attribute and who approves changes.

Connector resilience should be tested rather than assumed. Deploying two connectors does not help if both use the same firewall path, DNS dependency, service account, or certificate that can fail simultaneously. A resilience test should disable one connector and confirm synchronization and authentication continue through the other. Then test a shared dependency so the team understands what redundancy does not protect against.

Time synchronization is a subtle federation dependency. SAML assertions and certificates have validity windows, and a clock difference between identity provider, service provider, connector, or endpoint can cause authentication to fail even when configuration is otherwise correct. When troubleshooting intermittent federation errors, compare timestamps across systems before rotating keys or rewriting policies.

Access policies should also be reviewed for recovery scenarios. If the primary multifactor method is unavailable, does a secure fallback exist for administrators? If certificate authentication fails because the PKI service is down, can already-enrolled devices continue working? Emergency access should be tightly controlled and audited, but completely ignoring fallback design can turn one dependency outage into a total administrative lockout.

The historical Workspace ONE Design and Advanced Integration Specialist exam is a natural companion because integration quality depends on the architecture around it. Connector placement, trust boundaries, availability, directory topology, and gateway design determine whether individual SAML or certificate configurations can operate reliably at scale.

Finally, integration testing should use more than one account and one device. Include a standard employee, a privileged administrator, a contractor or restricted group, an unmanaged endpoint, and a noncompliant managed endpoint. These cases expose policy-order and entitlement mistakes that a single happy-path administrator test can miss.
