VCP-VCF Administrator: Operating VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0

VMware Certified Professional – VMware Cloud Foundation Administrator is one of the central professional-level credentials in VMware’s current private-cloud certification portfolio. The active exam is 2V0-17.25 VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0 Administrator, and the credential targets professionals who install, configure, manage, and perform basic troubleshooting across an integrated VCF environment.

The scope is intentionally broader than traditional vSphere administration. Broadcom’s current exam guide identifies components that include vCenter, ESX, vSphere Supervisor, vSAN, NSX, VCF Identity Broker, VCF Automation, VCF Operations, Operations for Logs, Fleet Management, Operations for Networks, and HCX. A candidate has to understand how those services fit together rather than study each as an isolated product.

That breadth is the defining feature of the VMware certifications in the VCF era: professional roles are organized around operating a private-cloud platform, with separate Administrator, Architect, and Support perspectives.

2V0-17.25 is a 60-item proctored VCF 9.0 exam

The current exam guide lists 60 items, a scaled passing score of 300, and a 135-minute appointment. Delivery is through Pearson VUE. Broadcom describes the minimally qualified candidate as someone who can install, configure, manage, and perform basic troubleshooting of a VMware Cloud Foundation solution.

The question format can include multiple-choice and multiple-selection items, but the real challenge is platform breadth. Candidates may know vSphere well and still be weak in NSX, vSAN, VCF Operations, identity, lifecycle, or automation. The exam target rewards a balanced operating model rather than deep expertise in only one component.

Training is recommended rather than a mandatory prerequisite under VMware’s simplified certification rules introduced in 2024. That removes an eligibility barrier, but it does not reduce the practical experience required to understand an integrated VCF environment.

Current VCF credentials also operate under a renewal model that differs from the older VMware program many administrators remember. Broadcom introduced a 36-month certification window for the VCF portfolio in 2025. Earning or renewing a current VCF certification requires passing the relevant current exam, so keeping the badge active is tied to demonstrated knowledge of the present platform rather than to a permanent historical achievement. That makes version awareness part of certification planning: an experienced administrator should check the active exam before scheduling a renewal rather than assuming an older pass still maps automatically to the latest credential.

VCF administration starts with knowing the platform boundaries

VMware Cloud Foundation combines compute, storage, networking, management, automation, operations, identity, and lifecycle services into a private-cloud platform. Administrators need to understand which component owns which responsibility. Without that map, troubleshooting becomes a sequence of guesses across multiple consoles.

A useful mental model separates control planes. vCenter and ESX provide core virtualization, vSAN provides software-defined storage, NSX provides network and security functions, and VCF management services coordinate deployment, lifecycle, fleet-level operations, and platform consumption. Workload services such as vSphere Supervisor introduce Kubernetes-oriented capabilities on top of the same infrastructure.

Study should repeatedly ask two questions: where is the desired state defined, and which component enforces it? Those questions help when a configuration appears correct in one interface but a dependent service has not converged.

Lifecycle management is a platform responsibility, not an afterthought

A private cloud cannot be operated safely if patching and upgrades are treated as occasional manual projects. VCF administration includes lifecycle planning, compatibility awareness, prechecks, sequencing, remediation, and validation across multiple integrated components. An update that is harmless for one product can still fail if the broader bill of materials or dependency chain is ignored.

Lab practice should therefore include maintenance workflows, not only greenfield deployment. Review current versions, perform readiness checks, identify dependencies, update a controlled environment, and verify service health afterward. When possible, introduce a failed precheck so the remediation process becomes part of the exercise.

Fleet Management also deserves attention because certificates, credentials, configuration drift, lifecycle, and security are easier to control when treated at platform scale. Administrators need to know which tasks are local and which should be managed centrally.

NSX and vSAN are essential because compute alone is not a private cloud

Many vSphere administrators arrive with strong compute knowledge and discover that VCF requires more confidence in network and storage design. NSX provides logical networking, routing, security, and connectivity constructs that influence workload placement and application reachability. vSAN turns local storage resources into policy-driven shared storage for the platform.

Preparation should include packet-path reasoning and storage-policy reasoning. For networking, trace how traffic moves between workloads, segments, gateways, and external networks. For storage, understand how policy choices affect placement, resilience, capacity, and performance. In both areas, configuration should be tied to the service objective.

Troubleshooting becomes more efficient when the candidate can distinguish a compute symptom from an NSX or vSAN cause. A workload failure may surface in vCenter even though the root condition belongs to a different subsystem.

Identity, certificates, and access control connect every management layer

VCF has many administrative surfaces, and each depends on authentication, authorization, certificates, and trust. Broadcom’s exam guide includes VCF Identity Broker among the components an administrator is expected to know. That reflects the operational reality that identity failures can block management even when infrastructure is healthy.

Candidates should understand how administrative roles are separated and how identity sources are integrated. Practice certificate lifecycle tasks and recognize symptoms caused by expired or untrusted certificates. Learn which credentials are managed centrally and which remain component-specific.

Least privilege should be viewed as an operating requirement. Giving every administrator broad rights can make troubleshooting seem easier in a lab, but it hides the role boundaries that matter in production and can create unnecessary risk.

Administrators need to know whether the private cloud is healthy before users report problems. VCF Operations provides monitoring, capacity insight, optimization, alerting, and operational visibility across the platform. Logs and network-focused operations tools add evidence that can help isolate complex incidents.

A strong study environment should produce its own incidents. Create resource pressure, alter a configuration, generate an alert, and follow the evidence. The objective is to understand what the tool is measuring and what action the signal justifies, not simply learn the name of a dashboard.

Operational visibility also informs planning. Capacity trends, utilization, and health data influence when clusters need to expand, which workloads should move, and where configuration or policy is generating avoidable risk.

Automation and Supervisor expand the administrator role beyond virtual machines

VCF 9.0 includes automation and application-platform capabilities that make the environment more than a virtual-machine hosting stack. VCF Automation can expose governed services to consumers, while vSphere Supervisor provides a foundation for Kubernetes-oriented workloads and services.

An administrator does not need to become an application developer to understand these components. The expectation is to know how they consume infrastructure, how identity and networking connect, what lifecycle dependencies exist, and where the boundary lies between platform administration and tenant or application responsibilities.

This context prevents troubleshooting mistakes. A failed application deployment may be caused by quota, policy, networking, identity, namespace configuration, or underlying infrastructure. The administrator needs enough cross-layer knowledge to direct the investigation to the correct owner.

The current Administrator exam replaced an earlier VCF 5.2 path

VMware previously offered a VCF 5.2 Administrator exam, 2V0-11.25, but Broadcom marked that certification and exam for retirement on December 15, 2025, with registrations closing earlier. Candidates preparing now should therefore use 2V0-17.25 and the VCF 9.0 objectives rather than an older VCF 5.2 blueprint.

Older material can still teach useful concepts, especially around SDDC management and component relationships, but exact architecture, product names, workflows, and objectives must be checked against VCF 9.0. The platform has evolved enough that a direct exam-code substitution is not a sound study strategy.

This transition is a good example of why current-status research matters. A page can contain technically sound private-cloud content and still mislead candidates if it points them to a retired registration target.

Administrator and Architect validate different decisions

The Administrator credential focuses on deploying, configuring, managing, and troubleshooting VCF. VCP-VCF Architect focuses on designing a VCF solution that satisfies stakeholder and technical requirements. The knowledge overlaps, but the decision perspective is different.

An administrator asks how to implement and operate the platform correctly. An architect asks which design best satisfies availability, manageability, performance, recoverability, security, capacity, integration, and other requirements. Experienced professionals may eventually hold both, but one is not a formal prerequisite for the other.

There is also a narrower current option, VCP-VVF Administrator, for professionals centered on VMware vSphere Foundation rather than the full VCF stack. Comparing job scope before choosing an exam avoids unnecessary breadth or an undersized credential target.

Preparation should reproduce the operating rhythm of a private cloud

Build a study plan around recurring platform work: provision, configure, secure, monitor, patch, troubleshoot, and recover. Each cycle should cross components. For example, a new workload domain or cluster should lead to networking, storage, identity, lifecycle, and monitoring questions rather than ending when compute becomes available.

Keep an architecture map visible while studying. When a service fails, mark which components depend on it and where telemetry should appear. Over time, the environment stops feeling like a dozen separate VMware products and starts behaving like one platform with understandable boundaries.

That is the level of understanding 2V0-17.25 is designed to validate. The strongest candidates are not those who can recite the most menu paths; they are those who can predict how a change in one VCF component affects the rest of the private cloud.
