VCP-DTM 2024: The VMware Horizon Credential and the Move to Omnissa

VMware Certified Professional – Desktop Management 2024 belongs to a certification era that ended when VMware’s End-User Computing business moved out of the Broadcom-delivered VMware education program. The credential validated Horizon deployment and administration skills, but as of July 9, 2024, End-User Computing exams and credentials were no longer delivered by VMware by Broadcom. Current Horizon certifications now live in the Omnissa learning ecosystem.

That transition changes how a VCP-DTM 2024 page should be read in 2026. It remains useful for understanding the historical VMware credential and the Horizon skills it represented, but it should not direct a new candidate toward an obsolete VMware registration path. Current learners need to compare their role with Omnissa’s Administrator, Engineer, Design Engineer, and expert-level certification structure.

The historical 2V0-51.23 VMware Horizon 8.x Professional exam remains an important reference point because it shows what the 2024 VCP-DTM track expected from Horizon administrators. The surrounding program, however, has changed.

VCP-DTM 2024 was a Horizon operations credential

Desktop Management focused on the infrastructure required to deliver and operate virtual desktops and applications with VMware Horizon. Candidates needed to understand components such as Connection Servers, agents, clients, desktop pools, authentication, profile and application delivery, network dependencies, and the operational tasks that keep a Horizon environment available.

The role was broader than building a pool and assigning users. A production Horizon administrator has to reason about user experience, image management, capacity, session behavior, entitlement, security, certificates, protocols, load balancing, storage performance, and troubleshooting across infrastructure layers.

That practical scope is why the old certification still has historical value on a résumé. It records competence with a technology stack that many organizations continue to operate even though the certification brand and delivery organization have changed.

The 2024 VMware credential is no longer the current acquisition path

Broadcom’s current End-User Computing certification pages carry a clear note: as of July 9, 2024, all EUC exams and credentials are no longer delivered by VMware by Broadcom, and learners are directed to Omnissa. This was not simply a routine annual retirement followed by VCP-DTM 2025 under the same program.

That distinction prevents a common error in legacy content. VCP-DTM 2023 was retired at the end of 2023 and replaced by VCP-DTM 2024, following VMware’s normal year-based certification model. The 2024 transition was different because the product business itself moved into a separate company and certification program.

New candidates should therefore verify current Horizon credential names with Omnissa rather than wait for another VMware VCP-DTM year label. The VMware certifications now center on VCF, VVF, selected legacy infrastructure tracks, and other Broadcom-retained technology areas.

Omnissa now organizes Horizon learning by job depth

Omnissa’s current certification structure includes Administrator, Engineer, Design Engineer, and platform-level expert paths. For Horizon specifically, the catalog includes Omnissa Certified Administrator – Horizon and Omnissa Certified Engineer – Horizon, with design-oriented progression for professionals who need to architect larger environments.

The Administrator level targets foundational deployment and administration skills. The Engineer level goes further into troubleshooting and optimization. This separation is useful because it lets candidates choose a credential based on actual responsibilities instead of treating all Horizon knowledge as one VCP-sized package.

For Horizon, the current labels make that split explicit: Omnissa Certified Administrator – Horizon (OCA-H) is the administration route, while Omnissa Certified Engineer – Horizon (OCE-H) represents deeper troubleshooting and optimization. Omnissa also lists design and platform-engineer progression above those levels, and its current credentials are issued with a two-year validity period. That is materially different from treating VCP-DTM 2024 as a permanent template for the modern path; both the credential names and the renewal context now belong to a separate certification system.

Omnissa also removed mandatory training prerequisites for new certifications in August 2025. Training remains recommended, but the eligibility model is different from older VMware certification paths that sometimes required a course depending on prior credentials and the date the requirements were completed.

Historical 2V0-51.23 knowledge still maps to real Horizon work

The old exam target should be used as a skills archive rather than a current registration instruction. Horizon architecture, desktop pools, instant-clone operations, authentication, entitlements, protocols, profile behavior, application delivery, image lifecycle, and troubleshooting remain real operational subjects.

Where material becomes risky is version-specific implementation. Product names, supported components, console workflows, licensing, identity integrations, client behavior, and lifecycle practices can change. A 2023 exam guide can tell a learner which areas mattered, but current Omnissa documentation should determine how those tasks are performed now.

This is a useful general rule for legacy certification content: concepts can outlive exams, but commands, limits, prerequisites, and product ownership must be revalidated. The more specific the claim, the more important the current documentation becomes.

Horizon troubleshooting requires thinking across layers

A user saying “my desktop is slow” does not identify the failing component. The cause could be endpoint connectivity, protocol conditions, Connection Server behavior, authentication, profile load, application delivery, virtual desktop resources, storage latency, host contention, network policy, or a dependency such as DNS and certificates.

Strong administrators build a fault-isolation sequence. Confirm scope first: one user, one pool, one site, or the entire environment. Then determine whether the problem occurs before connection, during authentication, at desktop assignment, during session establishment, or after the session is active. Each stage points to a different set of evidence.

That troubleshooting discipline transfers directly into Omnissa’s current Engineer-level expectations. Product branding can change, but the ability to turn a user symptom into a bounded infrastructure problem remains one of the most valuable Horizon skills.

Image and pool management should be learned as lifecycle engineering

Desktop delivery is not a one-time deployment. Administrators have to patch images, update applications, test changes, maintain rollback options, control versions, manage capacity, and minimize disruption to users. The operational challenge increases when many pools or sites depend on a common image strategy.

A good lab should therefore include change, not just creation. Build a pool, update the base image, introduce a controlled application change, verify user impact, and practice rollback. Record which objects and dependencies participate in each step so that a failed update can be diagnosed systematically.

Profile and user-environment behavior should be part of the same lifecycle. A technically successful desktop deployment can still produce a poor user experience if settings, application state, login time, or personalization are handled badly.

Horizon environments sit close to enterprise identity. Authentication methods, directory relationships, entitlements, certificates, secure gateways, and access policies can all affect whether a user reaches the correct resource. These areas are also frequent sources of incidents because a small configuration error can have a wide blast radius.

Practice should include certificate replacement, authentication failure, entitlement mismatch, and expired or untrusted dependencies. The goal is to recognize how each issue appears to the user and where the administrator should look for evidence.

Security decisions should also be connected to operations. Stronger controls that are poorly integrated can create support problems, while convenient exceptions can weaken the environment. Administrators need to understand both the control and its user-impact path.

Current preparation should use Omnissa objectives as the authority

Someone who already studied for VCP-DTM 2024 does not need to discard everything. Map the old knowledge to the current Omnissa credential that matches the role, then perform a gap analysis. Keep durable Horizon architecture and administration knowledge, and update areas where product versions, terminology, or certification objectives changed.

Do not assume that a retired VMware exam blueprint and a current Omnissa exam have one-to-one coverage. Omnissa can rebalance the scope, split administration from troubleshooting, introduce new product capabilities, or retire older workflows. The current exam guide should define what is testable.

Hands-on work remains the best bridge. A candidate who can deploy, operate, update, secure, and troubleshoot a current Horizon environment will find it easier to adapt to a new certification blueprint than someone whose preparation consists primarily of memorized VCP-DTM questions.

Existing VCP-DTM credentials remain part of a professional record

The move to Omnissa does not make a legitimately earned VCP-DTM 2024 credential meaningless. It identifies the program and technology context under which the professional was certified. Employers operating inherited Horizon environments may still recognize that history immediately.

What it does not do is guarantee currency. A 2024 credential says little by itself about whether the holder has worked with the latest Horizon releases, new identity integrations, updated client behavior, or Omnissa’s current operational practices. Professionals should pair the historical badge with evidence of current hands-on experience or a newer Omnissa credential when relevance matters.

That is the cleanest way to explain the transition: VCP-DTM 2024 is a valid historical VMware EUC achievement, while current certification acquisition and progression for Horizon belong to Omnissa.

The transition is easiest when the role, not the brand, drives the plan

A Horizon administrator should choose the current credential that validates deployment and day-to-day operations. A troubleshooting specialist should look at the Engineer level. A designer responsible for scale, integration, and resilience should follow the design path. The old VCP-DTM name is useful context, but it should not decide the next certification automatically.

This role-first method also keeps learning practical. Build skills around user access, image lifecycle, profiles, applications, protocols, capacity, security, monitoring, and troubleshooting. Those responsibilities survive organizational changes far better than certification labels.

VCP-DTM 2024 now marks the end of VMware-delivered Desktop Management certification. The current path is Omnissa, and the best use of the old page is to preserve the technical lineage while making the new ownership and certification structure unmistakable.
