VCP-VMC 2023 belongs to an earlier VMware certification model built around VMware Cloud services across hyperscaler environments. It should now be treated as a historical credential, not as a current certification target. Broadcom’s later VMware Cloud 2024 page used the same qualifying exam and then retired the VMware Cloud certification line on December 15, 2025, with new registrations ending earlier that autumn.
The value of the older credential was its focus on a hybrid operating model. Candidates were expected to understand how familiar VMware infrastructure concepts changed when compute, networking, lifecycle, migration, and platform operations extended into a provider-managed cloud environment. That made the certification relevant to cloud administrators, virtualization administrators, consultants, and architects working across on-premises and hosted VMware estates.
For anyone arriving through the old VCP-VMC 2023 terminology, the first task is therefore status control. The credential remains useful as a record of the skills it represented, but current preparation should be mapped to today’s VMware certifications rather than to a retired VMware Cloud badge.
The qualifying exam associated with the VMware Cloud track was 2V0-33.22 VMware Cloud Professional. VMware carried that exam into the later VCP-VMC 2024 version, where it was presented as a 70-question, 135-minute professional exam. Broadcom subsequently announced the retirement of that certification and exam for December 15, 2025.
This timeline matters because year-versioned VMware credentials were intended to communicate recency. A candidate who sees “2023” in an older training plan should not assume that the page is merely one release behind a still-active VMC track. The broader VMware Cloud certification family itself is no longer part of the current public certification portfolio.
The right historical interpretation is that VCP-VMC 2023 documented competence in the VMware Cloud operating model of its time. It can still describe prior professional experience accurately, but it should not be presented as an available 2026 certification route.
The VMware Cloud credential was broader than memorizing one hosted vSphere interface. Official descriptions emphasized VMware Cloud solutions across different hyperscaler partners, connecting and migrating workloads, and understanding the role of Kubernetes services such as Tanzu Kubernetes Grid. The underlying theme was consistency across locations while respecting the differences introduced by cloud providers.
That meant candidates had to think in terms of a software-defined data center delivered through a cloud service. Familiar constructs such as clusters, management components, virtual networking, storage policy, identity, and workload mobility were still important, but the administrator did not own every layer in the same way as in a customer-operated data center.
This shift is the main reason old VCP-VMC material can still be educational. It teaches the transition from “I control the whole stack” to “I operate within a shared service boundary.” That distinction remains important in any managed or hosted infrastructure model even after the certification name has disappeared.
Traditional virtualization administration often begins with hardware, firmware, hypervisor hosts, vCenter, storage, and networking under one organization’s control. In a VMware Cloud service, some infrastructure lifecycle work is handled by the service provider. The customer concentrates more heavily on workload configuration, access, network integration, migration, governance, capacity consumption, and service-level consequences.
A strong VMC administrator therefore needed to know not only how a component worked, but who was responsible for it. When an issue appeared, the correct first action depended on whether the fault sat inside the customer-controlled workload layer, the cloud service, the network connection between locations, or an integrated external service.
That same reasoning affects change management. A setting that would normally be modified directly on premises might be provider-managed in a hosted environment. The administrator’s job becomes partly technical and partly contractual: understand the supported operating boundary, collect the right evidence, and escalate through the correct path when responsibility crosses that boundary.
Migration was central to the VMware Cloud use case because enterprises rarely moved every workload in the same way. Some applications tolerated downtime and could use simple cold migration. Others needed low-disruption movement, staged replication, or a carefully coordinated cutover. Database consistency, IP dependencies, latency, security controls, and licensing could all change the preferred method.
Good preparation therefore started by classifying workloads. Which systems are tightly coupled? Which depend on fixed addressing or external appliances? Which require predictable latency to on-premises services? Which can be re-IPed easily, and which have recovery or business-continuity obligations that make a rushed move unacceptable?
Only after those constraints were clear did the migration mechanism become meaningful. This is still a useful professional habit. Cloud migration succeeds when the chosen method fits the application’s operational characteristics, not when teams force every workload through the same tool because it is familiar.
A cloud SDDC is only useful when users, applications, administrators, and dependent systems can reach the right services securely. VCP-VMC preparation therefore required administrators to reason about routed connectivity, address planning, network extension, firewall policy, DNS, identity, and the effect of failures in the connection between on-premises and cloud environments.
Route design deserved particular attention. Overlapping address space, asymmetric paths, poorly planned advertisement, or an undocumented dependency on a data-center gateway could turn a migration into an outage. The same applied to security: extending a workload into the cloud without reviewing firewall policy and identity boundaries could preserve connectivity while weakening the intended trust model.
Identity also needed deliberate design. Administrators had to know which accounts controlled the cloud service, which identities were used inside vCenter or guest operating systems, and how enterprise authentication integrated with management access. Hybrid cloud did not remove identity complexity; it made clear ownership and separation more important.
Provider-managed infrastructure can reduce some maintenance tasks, but it does not eliminate operational accountability. Teams still need to monitor application behavior, cluster consumption, network performance, storage use, backups, alerts, and user experience. They also need to distinguish a service incident from a workload problem quickly enough to engage the right support channel.
Capacity management was especially different from a traditional procurement cycle. A hosted service can make expansion faster, but consumption has a direct financial effect. Administrators had to understand when additional hosts or services were justified, how growth changed cost, and when workload optimization was preferable to simply adding capacity.
This is one of the durable lessons from the VMC track: cloud operations combine technical telemetry with economic judgment. A platform can be healthy and still be poorly operated if resources are overprovisioned, migration decisions create unnecessary data transfer, or teams leave temporary capacity running indefinitely.
The later VCP-VMC description explicitly referenced the benefit of Tanzu Kubernetes Grid, reflecting VMware’s effort to place containerized workloads beside virtual machines in a common infrastructure story. Candidates were not being turned into Kubernetes specialists, but they needed to understand why modern application platforms influenced cloud architecture and operations.
For a virtualization professional, the important mental shift was to stop treating every workload as a long-lived VM. Some applications might be delivered through Kubernetes clusters, automation pipelines, or cloud-native services, creating different expectations for networking, identity, scaling, observability, and lifecycle.
That broader application view remains relevant in today’s VMware private-cloud certifications, where Kubernetes and supervisor-based workloads are part of the modern infrastructure landscape. The product names and exams have changed, but the need to support more than one workload model has not.
Broadcom’s current certification portfolio is organized around VMware Cloud Foundation and VMware vSphere Foundation. VCP-VCF Administrator targets professionals who deploy and operate the broader VCF private-cloud stack, while VCP-VCF Architect is oriented toward translating requirements into a defensible VCF design.
VCP-VVF Administrator is narrower and more vSphere-centered, validating administration of VMware vSphere Foundation. None of these should be described as a one-for-one replacement for VCP-VMC 2023. The old VMC credential was about a hosted multi-cloud service model; the current credentials emphasize private-cloud platforms and role-based administration, support, or architecture.
Professionals choosing a current route should therefore start with present responsibilities. Someone running VVF infrastructure has a different target from an architect designing VCF, and both differ from a consultant whose main experience was VMware Cloud on a hyperscaler.
Historical study material can still teach hybrid networking, workload mobility, shared responsibility, cloud economics, and cross-environment operations. Those concepts do not become false simply because the certification retires. The risk comes from carrying forward obsolete exam instructions, registration assumptions, product packaging, or certification-path rules as though they were current.
A sensible approach is to separate durable architecture concepts from version-specific program facts. Keep the former as professional knowledge. Recheck the latter against the current VMware portfolio before using them for a new certification plan.
VCP-VMC 2023 is therefore best understood as a snapshot of VMware’s earlier multi-cloud certification strategy. It can explain what a professional learned and operated at that time, while current candidates should move to the VCF or VVF path that matches the environment they actually administer or design today.
