5V0-31-22: Cloud Foundation Specialist v2 in Context

The VMware Cloud Foundation Specialist (v2) (5V0-31-22) exam followed the earlier VCF specialist generation and focused on planning, bringing up, configuring, operating, upgrading, and troubleshooting VMware Cloud Foundation. Historical material associates it with the VMware Certified Specialist - Cloud Foundation 2023 badge. It is now a legacy code: Broadcom’s current specialist guide is 5V0-31-23, and the active 2026 certification portfolio has moved further to VCF 9 career credentials.

The version change matters because the core architecture stayed recognizable while operational capabilities expanded. Candidates still needed to understand SDDC Manager, management and VI workload domains, vSphere, vSAN, NSX, certificates, identity, lifecycle, host inventory, and workload management. But newer VCF generations increasingly emphasized standardized imaging, integrated Kubernetes services, automated certificate and password workflows, and tighter lifecycle orchestration.

Bring-up succeeds only when the physical design is already coherent

Cloud Builder can automate initial VCF deployment, but automation cannot compensate for incorrect addressing, unsupported hardware, bad DNS, inconsistent time, missing VLANs, or incompatible host configuration. Preparation should therefore start before the deployment wizard. The deployment parameter workbook and validation process express design assumptions that need to be correct across management, vMotion, storage, and NSX networking.

When bring-up fails, read the validation result as evidence rather than repeatedly restarting the deployment. A name-resolution error, MTU mismatch, unreachable gateway, or unsupported component points to a specific dependency. Fixing the underlying requirement is safer than bypassing validation because the same dependency will otherwise fail later during lifecycle or workload-domain operations.

Commissioning hosts creates a controlled inventory for future domains

A VCF host is more than an ESXi server visible in vCenter. Commissioning verifies that the host meets platform requirements and brings it into SDDC Manager inventory so it can be assigned to a cluster or workload domain. Network pools, storage choices, credentials, hardware compatibility, and software state influence whether a host is suitable.

Decommissioning deserves equal attention because hosts may be reused. Before removing a host from one role, confirm that workloads and storage components have evacuated safely, the cluster remains healthy, and the host can be returned to a state accepted by VCF. Reuse is an operational workflow, not merely deleting an inventory object.

Workload-domain design should reflect lifecycle boundaries

A workload domain can isolate management, hardware, network, or application concerns, but every domain adds operational objects and lifecycle responsibility. Think in terms of change windows and failure blast radius. If two application groups require different NSX designs or upgrade timing, separate domains may be justified. If their needs are identical, unnecessary separation can create overhead without business value.

The exam’s domain scenarios become easier when you ask what must change independently. Hardware generations, security zones, storage architectures, administrative ownership, and recovery objectives are stronger reasons for separation than arbitrary department names. Architecture should make future maintenance easier, not simply make the initial diagram look organized.

Edge-cluster placement connects network services with capacity and availability

NSX Edge nodes provide north-south routing and other services that depend on physical connectivity and sufficient compute. Placement decisions have to consider rack failure, uplink redundancy, BGP design, workload locality, and the form factor required by the service. A pair of edge nodes in the same failure domain may satisfy a checkbox while failing the actual availability objective.

Use networking scenarios to trace traffic from workload segment to Tier-1, Tier-0, edge uplinks, top-of-rack switches, and upstream routers. If traffic fails, determine which hop lacks route, adjacency, firewall permission, or physical reachability. This is more reliable than changing NSX configuration randomly because the network is “inside VCF.”

Certificates and passwords have to be managed as coordinated platform state

VCF can automate or centralize parts of certificate and password management, but administrators still need to understand supported certificate authorities, certificate chains, component coverage, rotation timing, and the effect of expiring credentials. A single missed component can create trust failures that surface as inaccessible APIs or disconnected managers.

Password rotation has similar sequencing concerns. Service accounts, appliance root credentials, and component integrations may rely on different mechanisms. Good operations verify that the new credential has propagated and that automated workflows still authenticate. A rotation is incomplete until dependent services have been tested.

Kubernetes integration made workload management part of the VCF story

vSphere with Tanzu introduced Supervisor namespaces, control-plane networking, storage policy, user permissions, and Kubernetes constructs into the VCF operating model. That meant a VCF specialist needed enough Kubernetes literacy to understand what infrastructure services the workload platform consumed, even if application development was outside the administrator’s role.

The later VCF VKS specialization shows how important this domain became. For the older exam, focus on the dependency chain: cluster eligibility, NSX or supported networking, pod and ingress/egress ranges, storage policy, namespace configuration, and user permissions. A failure in any one layer can block cluster or workload creation.

Upgrades should be treated as dependency graphs

VCF lifecycle management sequences bundles because components have compatibility requirements. Administrators need to know how bundles are obtained, how prechecks work, which domain is upgraded first, what host maintenance implies, and when an async patch may be appropriate. Restricted-connectivity environments add another concern because bundles may need offline transfer and validation.

Before upgrading, close existing health issues. A cluster already resynchronizing storage or an NSX environment with degraded edge health is a poor starting point for a platform change. After the upgrade, verify version inventory, service health, workload reachability, policy compliance, and logs. Completion status alone is not enough.

The direct historical successor was the deployment specialist blueprint

The VMware Cloud Foundation Deployment Specialist exam formalized a later version of many of the same responsibilities and added clearer VCF 5-era detail around Cloud Builder, NSX Federation, certificate management, lifecycle, vSphere with Tanzu, workload domains, and SoS diagnostics. That makes it a useful historical comparison, though it is also not the current VCF 9 certification path.

For a 2026 learner, active certifications such as VCF Administrator are the correct scheduling reference. Use 5V0-31-22 only to understand how VCF operational concepts evolved, and always translate old product versions and workflows into the current documentation before applying them to production.

Practice by proving prerequisites before pressing the deploy button

Create exercises where the initial task fails for a reason outside the immediate interface: bad DNS, expired certificate, incompatible host, missing route, insufficient capacity, unavailable storage policy, or incorrect namespace permission. Diagnose the prerequisite, correct it, and then repeat the workflow. This builds the habit of resolving causes rather than restarting automation.

That habit is the most transferable lesson from 5V0-31-22. Cloud Foundation reduces manual variation, but it does not eliminate architecture or operational judgment. Successful administrators understand the state VCF expects, the sequence by which it changes that state, and the evidence required to prove the private cloud remains healthy afterward.

VCF troubleshooting improves when administrators distinguish desired state from observed state. SDDC Manager may expect a certain component version, certificate, password, or host image while the underlying product reports something different. Compare inventory and health across layers before attempting repair. If the management plane and component disagree, the next step may be reconciliation rather than repeating the failed workflow. This is especially important after interrupted upgrades or manual emergency changes.

The API is another operational tool, not merely a developer feature. SDDC Manager APIs can support repeatable inventory, lifecycle, host, and workload-domain workflows, but automation must still handle authentication, asynchronous task state, idempotency, and failures. A script that submits a task successfully has not completed the operation until the task reaches a validated final state. Production automation should log request IDs and preserve enough context to troubleshoot partial completion.

Business continuity extends beyond backups. A graceful shutdown or planned facility outage requires sequence because management services depend on infrastructure below them and workloads depend on services above them. Power-on reverses that dependency chain. Document which network, storage, identity, and management components must exist before higher-level services start. An orderly shutdown procedure is a useful test of whether the team actually understands platform dependencies.

Change windows should also include a verification plan. Define which SDDC Manager checks, vCenter alarms, NSX status indicators, storage health signals, and representative workloads must be green before the window closes. This turns “upgrade finished” into a service-quality statement. If the environment cannot be proven healthy with a small set of reliable checks, operations will struggle to detect subtle regressions after maintenance.

Workload-domain design should start with isolation requirements rather than with a default cluster count. Separate domains can create cleaner lifecycle, security, availability, and organizational boundaries, but they also introduce more management objects and capacity commitments. Decide what truly needs an independent failure or change boundary, then size hosts and networks accordingly. A domain created only for administrative neatness can become expensive to operate, while an environment that combines incompatible workloads may make future maintenance unnecessarily risky.

Certificate and password management are equally operational. SDDC Manager coordinates several components, each with credentials and trust relationships that can expire or drift. Rotating one certificate manually without understanding the platform workflow can break service-to-service communication even though users can still reach individual interfaces. Practice should include identifying which component owns a certificate, which systems trust it, how replacement is initiated, and what health checks prove that communication has recovered.

NSX dependencies also deserve explicit validation when a domain is expanded. Host transport configuration, uplinks, VLAN reachability, edge capacity, routing, and name resolution all affect whether new hosts can participate successfully. If commissioning completes but overlay connectivity fails, troubleshooting should move from physical reachability to transport-node state and then to routing rather than repeatedly rerunning the same deployment task. This layered method mirrors how a real VCF platform fails.
