2V0-62-23: Workspace ONE 22.x Professional Before the Omnissa Era

The VMware Workspace ONE 22.X Professional (2V0-62-23) exam belonged to VMware Certified Professional – Digital Workspace 2024. The published blueprint allotted 135 minutes for 70 proctored items and used VMware’s 300-point scaled passing standard. The target candidate was expected to have general IT experience plus practical familiarity deploying, managing, and performing basic troubleshooting across the Workspace ONE platform.

The certification context is now historical. Workspace ONE is part of Omnissa, and Omnissa’s current certification program uses Administrator, Engineer, Design Engineer, and Platform Engineer credentials for Workspace ONE and Horizon. Omnissa states that older VMware credentials remain available through legacy credential systems, but a new candidate in 2026 should research the current Omnissa path rather than assume 2V0-62-23 is still the active route.

The older VCP-DW 2024 path remains a useful map of the skills VMware expected: unified endpoint management, identity, application delivery, device compliance, access controls, platform administration, and troubleshooting. Those functions are still central to enterprise endpoint management even though the vendor and credential names have changed.

Unified endpoint management starts with ownership, enrollment, and lifecycle state

Workspace ONE UEM manages devices only after the organization has decided how those devices enter management. Corporate-owned, personally owned, shared, rugged, and kiosk-style devices can require different enrollment methods and restrictions. Apple, Android, Windows, macOS, and other platforms expose different management frameworks, so “one policy for every device” is rarely realistic.

For exam-style scenarios, first identify ownership and platform. Then ask how enrollment establishes trust, which organization group owns the device, what profiles or compliance rules are assigned, and what should happen at retirement. Enrollment is not the end of the workflow. Device lifecycle includes provisioning, configuration, application delivery, certificate renewal, compliance response, operating-system updates, reassignment, enterprise wipe, and full removal where appropriate.

Profiles express configuration intent, while compliance evaluates whether the device stays inside policy

Profiles push settings such as Wi-Fi, VPN, certificates, restrictions, passcode requirements, email configuration, and platform-specific controls. Compliance policies evaluate device state and can trigger actions when a device falls outside requirements. These are related but different mechanisms: a profile attempts to configure; compliance evaluates conditions and responds to deviation.

Strong administrators consider sequencing. A certificate may have to arrive before a Wi-Fi or VPN profile can authenticate. A compliance rule should not quarantine a newly enrolled device before the baseline configuration has had time to apply. If an action removes access automatically, the team needs a recovery path for legitimate users whose devices are repaired. Policy is therefore both technical configuration and operational process.

Application delivery combines assignment, trust, versioning, and user context

Workspace ONE can distribute public applications, internal applications, web applications, and platform-specific packages. Administrators need to understand assignment groups, deployment behavior, application configuration, update strategy, dependencies, and the difference between making an app available and forcing installation. Windows application delivery adds package, detection, and peer or content-distribution considerations.

Troubleshooting app deployment starts by proving scope. Is the device in the correct assignment group? Has it checked in? Is the application compatible with the platform and architecture? Did prerequisite content install? Is the failure in download, installation, detection, or launch? The UEM console may show one high-level failure while device logs reveal the stage that actually broke.

Identity and access turn managed-device state into conditional access decisions

The digital-workspace model connects device management with identity. Certificates, SSO, Workspace ONE Access, device compliance, authentication methods, and application entitlements can work together so access decisions consider both the user and the endpoint. This is stronger than treating every valid username and password as equivalent.

Certificate-based authentication is especially important because device identity can be established without repeatedly prompting users for passwords. But certificate workflows introduce their own dependencies: issuing authorities, templates, SCEP or related enrollment mechanisms, trust chains, renewal, revocation, and time synchronization. A certificate problem may present as an application access failure even when UEM enrollment looks healthy.

Tunnel and per-app connectivity extend policy beyond the public internet

Enterprise applications often need internal resources that should not be exposed directly. Workspace ONE Tunnel can provide per-app connectivity so approved applications on managed devices reach internal services through a controlled path. The administrator has to coordinate UEM assignment, application identity, certificates, device traffic rules, backend reachability, and the Tunnel service itself.

A good troubleshooting sequence separates device policy from gateway health. Confirm that the Tunnel app and configuration profile reached the device, that required certificates exist, that the application is included in the intended traffic rule, and that the Tunnel service can reach the internal destination. If several unrelated applications fail simultaneously, the shared gateway or certificate layer becomes more likely than individual app packaging.

Content, email, and browser controls illustrate why data protection is broader than MDM

Managing the device is only one part of protecting corporate information. Email profiles, secure browsing, content repositories, data-loss controls, and application policies can reduce the chance that managed data moves into unmanaged destinations. The design should reflect business risk rather than applying maximum restriction everywhere, because unusable controls encourage users to find unsupported workarounds.

The exam’s practical value is learning to connect a control with a data-flow requirement. If sensitive files must stay inside managed apps, focus on application and content controls. If only compliant devices may reach mail, combine device compliance with conditional access. If remote users need an internal web service, secure access and Tunnel policy become relevant. Choose the control from the flow of data.

Organization groups, roles, and smart groups define administrative and assignment boundaries

Large UEM environments need delegation. Organization groups create hierarchy and tenancy boundaries; administrator roles restrict what staff can view or change; smart groups and assignment groups target devices or users based on criteria. Poor hierarchy can make every later policy harder to manage because scope becomes ambiguous.

Least privilege applies to administrators just as it does to end users. A help-desk operator may need to view device status and perform selected actions without editing global compliance policy. A regional administrator may require control only over one business unit. When troubleshooting, always confirm the console context because an administrator can appear to be “missing” an object that simply lives outside the current organizational scope.

Troubleshooting should follow the device check-in and policy-evaluation chain

When a device is not behaving as expected, begin with enrollment and check-in. Confirm the device record, ownership, platform, user association, organization group, connectivity, and most recent sync. Then verify profile, application, compliance, certificate, and access assignments. Finally inspect device-side logs or service health for the component that failed.

This order prevents broad changes. If only one device is affected, look for device-specific state. If every device in one smart group is affected, examine assignment or policy. If many platforms fail at the same time, investigate shared identity, notification, certificate, or service dependencies. The same fault-domain reasoning used in infrastructure operations applies to endpoint management.

The Omnissa transition changes the certification path, not the core administration questions

Omnissa now offers Omnissa Certified Administrator – Workspace ONE and Omnissa Certified Engineer – Workspace ONE, with design and platform credentials above them. Since August 2025, Omnissa has not required mandatory training before its new certification exams; the Workspace ONE Engineer credential then arrived in December 2025. Those are the current program names candidates should compare with their job role.

The historical VMware-era Workspace ONE exam still teaches useful architecture and operations. Use 2V0-62-23 to understand enrollment, device lifecycle, profiles, compliance, applications, identity, certificates, secure access, hierarchy, and troubleshooting. Then update the implementation details from current Omnissa documentation, especially where service endpoints, branding, platform support, or console workflows have changed.

For broader context, the old VMware end-user computing family also included Horizon 8.x Professional. Today both Horizon and Workspace ONE sit under Omnissa’s EUC certification program. That shared destination makes the historical relationship clearer, but the two platforms still demand different hands-on skills: virtual application delivery on one side and endpoint/identity management on the other.

Device update strategy is another important operational layer. Operating-system patches can change management APIs, application compatibility, certificate behavior, and security posture. Administrators should know how update rings, deferrals, maintenance windows, and platform-specific controls fit the organization’s risk tolerance. Blocking updates indefinitely creates security exposure; releasing them without pilot groups can create a large support incident.

Inventory quality affects almost every decision in UEM. Hardware model, operating-system version, encryption state, installed applications, compliance status, ownership, last check-in, and assigned user all help explain whether a device is healthy. Stale records should not be mistaken for active risk, and missing telemetry should be investigated before a policy is changed. Good reporting depends on trustworthy device state.

Certificates deserve a full lifecycle plan. Enrollment may issue the initial certificate successfully, but administrators also need renewal timing, revocation behavior, root or intermediate certificate rollover, and an emergency process for expired credentials. A mass certificate problem can simultaneously break Wi-Fi, VPN, email, SSO, and Tunnel, so monitoring certificate age is a service-availability task as well as a security task.

Remote actions such as lock, enterprise wipe, device wipe, or unenrollment carry different consequences. Support teams should know which action removes corporate data only, which resets the entire endpoint, and what evidence or approval is required before using destructive commands. The exam’s management scenarios become easier when each action is tied to a clear ownership and incident condition.

A useful final lab is to enroll one device from scratch and write down every trust and assignment decision that occurs: user identity, organization group, certificate issuance, profiles, applications, compliance evaluation, secure access, and eventual retirement. That end-to-end view is more valuable than memorizing isolated console pages because it shows how a change in one layer affects the rest of the managed-device lifecycle.
