1V0-71.21 After Retirement: Application Modernization Skills That Still Matter

The Associate VMware Application Modernization exam (1V0-71.21) is retired. Broadcom’s official retirement list records VMware Certified Technical Associate - Application Modernization 2024 as retired on June 30, 2025. The exam therefore belongs to VMware certification history, but its subject matter—containers, Kubernetes, microservices, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and observability—remains central to modern application platforms.

When current, the exam contained 60 questions, allowed 130 minutes, and cost $125. Its blueprint started with general Kubernetes and modernization concepts before introducing the Tanzu portfolio. That sequence is important: VMware expected candidates to understand why container platforms exist and how Kubernetes behaves before reasoning about vendor-specific services.

The present VMware certifications do not include a VCTA-AM replacement. Broadcom’s current catalog instead includes advanced VMware Cloud Foundation Kubernetes certification and a separate current Spring professional path. Those are different roles and levels, so the right transition depends on whether a learner is moving toward platform operations or application development.

Containers change packaging, but they do not remove infrastructure

A container packages an application process with the dependencies it needs while sharing the host operating-system kernel. That is different from a virtual machine, which includes a guest operating system and virtual hardware boundary. Containers are lighter to start and distribute, but they still require compute, network, storage, security, scheduling, and lifecycle management.

This distinction matters because “containerized” does not mean “infrastructure-free.” Images must be built and stored. Runtime hosts need capacity. Network paths must be available. Persistent applications need storage. Secrets and configuration must be protected. Logs and metrics must go somewhere. Kubernetes exists largely because operating many containers manually would be unreliable.

A useful study exercise is to take one application and list everything it needs before and after containerization. The packaging becomes more standardized, but most operational dependencies remain. That prevents the common mistake of treating containers as a replacement for architecture.

Kubernetes reconciles declared intent with running state

The old 1V0-71.21 blueprint emphasized the relationship between Kubernetes and containers, the architecture of a cluster, declarative versus imperative operation, Pods, Deployments, Services, Ingress, namespaces, ConfigMaps, and troubleshooting. These topics belong together because Kubernetes continuously attempts to make the running environment match declared desired state.

A Pod is the basic scheduling unit, but applications should rarely be managed as isolated Pods. A Deployment describes a desired replica state and update behavior. A Service provides stable reachability to changing Pods. Ingress or newer gateway mechanisms expose HTTP traffic according to policy. ConfigMaps separate non-secret configuration from the application image.

The core Kubernetes workload resources are easier to remember when candidates ask which controller owns the lifecycle. If a Pod disappears, what recreates it? If an application scales, what remains stable for clients? Those questions turn object definitions into operational understanding.

Service discovery and networking are where many first clusters become real

A container platform becomes useful only when workloads can find and reach one another safely. Kubernetes Services decouple clients from ephemeral Pod addresses by selecting a set of endpoints and exposing a stable service identity. Different service types solve different reachability requirements, while ingress controls external application traffic at the HTTP layer.

That abstraction can hide complexity from developers, but platform operators still need to understand DNS, cluster networking, load balancing, port mappings, network policy, and the path from an external client to a container. A Service that has no matching endpoints will not work just because its object exists.

Studying Kubernetes Services alongside real troubleshooting helps connect configuration to traffic flow. Inspect selectors, endpoints, Pod readiness, DNS resolution, and policy before making random changes to the application.

Modernization is an architectural decision, not a container-conversion project

The exam’s application-modernization objectives included why organizations modernize, microservices, CI/CD, image creation, registries, application catalogs, platform as a service, infrastructure as code, service mesh, and observability. That list points to a broader lesson: modernization changes how software is built, delivered, owned, and operated.

Breaking a monolith into services can improve independent deployment and team ownership, but it also introduces distributed-system problems such as network failure, version compatibility, tracing, retries, and data consistency. A service mesh can help with some traffic and security concerns, but it also adds another control layer. A registry improves image distribution, but it must be governed for provenance and vulnerability risk.

The right modernization choice is driven by business and operational constraints. Some applications benefit from decomposition; others are more reliable and economical when left largely intact. Certification preparation should therefore teach trade-offs rather than assume every old application should become dozens of microservices.

CI/CD and infrastructure as code connect software change to platform change

Continuous integration and delivery reduce the distance between a code change and a tested deployable artifact. Infrastructure as code extends the same discipline to environment definitions. Together they make change repeatable, reviewable, and version-controlled, but only if teams treat pipelines as production systems rather than disposable scripts.

A mature pipeline should verify more than whether a build succeeds. Tests, security checks, artifact provenance, environment promotion, configuration, rollback behavior, and deployment health all influence whether the release is safe. For infrastructure changes, validation should detect destructive or unintended differences before they reach production.

The old VCTA-AM blueprint introduced these ideas at a conceptual level. A 2026 learner should deepen them by building a small pipeline that creates a container image, stores it in a registry, deploys it declaratively, and verifies the resulting workload. That exercise connects several exam objectives in one coherent flow.

Observability explains what the application is doing, not just whether a host is up

The blueprint distinguished observability from monitoring because cloud-native systems generate more dynamic relationships than traditional host-centric dashboards capture. Monitoring tells teams about known indicators. Observability aims to give enough telemetry—metrics, logs, traces, events, and context—to investigate questions that were not fully anticipated in advance.

In Kubernetes, a healthy node does not prove that a particular service is healthy. A Pod can be running while its application returns errors. A deployment can meet its replica count while downstream latency makes the user experience poor. Operators need signals that connect platform state to application behavior.

Good practice is to begin with a user-facing symptom and follow evidence across layers. Check service health, request latency, error rates, Pod state, resource pressure, recent deployment changes, and dependency behavior. The objective is not to collect every metric; it is to shorten the path from symptom to cause.

Images, secrets, and supply chain controls are part of platform reliability

Container images make application delivery repeatable, but they also create a software-supply-chain dependency. A registry must protect who can push or pull images, teams need to know which base images are trusted, and old vulnerable layers should not remain in production simply because a deployment still runs. Image tags that can be overwritten also make troubleshooting harder because the same label may refer to different content over time.

Configuration and secrets should be separated deliberately. ConfigMaps can hold non-sensitive configuration, while passwords, tokens, and private keys need stronger handling and controlled access. Storing a secret directly in an image or public manifest makes rotation difficult and increases exposure. Kubernetes offers objects for these concerns, but secure operation still depends on encryption, identity, authorization, and the systems used to inject or rotate credentials.

For practice, trace one release from source commit to running Pod. Identify who built the image, which digest was deployed, where configuration entered the process, how a secret was supplied, which policy allowed the workload to run, and what evidence would prove the production cluster is using the intended artifact. This turns “CI/CD” from a slogan into a verifiable chain of custody.

The current paths split platform Kubernetes from application development

For platform professionals, Broadcom’s current catalog includes VMware Cloud Foundation VKS 3V0-24.25. It validates advanced skills deploying, operating, and securing vSphere Kubernetes Service environments inside VCF. That is a much deeper operations credential than the former associate-level 1V0-71.21 and should not be described as a direct successor.

For developers, the current Spring Professional Develop 2V0-72.22 remains a live Broadcom certification route focused on Spring and Spring Boot. It relates to the application-modernization domain but validates application-framework expertise rather than Kubernetes platform administration.

This split is useful because “application modernization” contains several careers. Platform engineers need cluster, network, storage, policy, lifecycle, and observability depth. Application developers need framework, testing, API, data, and delivery depth. Teams work together, but their certification choices need not be identical.

Stateful workloads add another useful layer of practice. A Pod can be recreated easily, but application data cannot be treated as disposable. Learn how persistent storage is requested, what happens when a workload is rescheduled, and how backups or recovery objectives change the design. Modernization is credible only when the platform can protect both stateless services and the stateful dependencies they rely on.

A strong legacy study plan builds one small system end to end

Instead of memorizing every old Tanzu product edition, build a small containerized application and follow it through its lifecycle. Create the image, push it to a registry, write deployment and service manifests, expose it, place configuration outside the image, scale it, inspect logs and metrics, break one dependency deliberately, and recover it.

Then explain which parts are generic Kubernetes knowledge and which depend on a particular VMware platform. This distinction protects the learner from outdated branding while preserving the technical foundation. The management of Kubernetes objects becomes much clearer when those objects are tied to a running application rather than studied as isolated YAML fragments.

1V0-71.21 is no longer an exam to pursue, but its retirement does not make its learning goals obsolete. The best use of the blueprint in 2026 is as an entry map into containers and platform engineering, followed by a current role-specific path once the learner knows whether the destination is VCF Kubernetes operations, Spring development, or another cloud-native specialization.
