TOEFL Sentence Completion: Grammar Skills in the 2026 Test

TOEFL Sentence Completion is best understood as a legacy study label, not a standalone section of the current TOEFL iBT. Older TOEFL paper-based and structure materials commonly used incomplete sentences to test grammar. The 2026 TOEFL iBT has a different design: Reading and Listening are adaptive, Writing includes a Build a Sentence task, and the overall test focuses on reading, listening, writing, and speaking in modern academic contexts.

The grammar skill behind sentence completion is still valuable. Candidates need to recognize clause structure, verb form, agreement, modifiers, connectors, word order, and logical meaning quickly. TOEFL practice tests and English test preparation material can support that work, provided older question labels are not mistaken for the current exam blueprint.

Start with the sentence skeleton before looking at vocabulary

When a sentence feels complicated, identify the main subject and verb first. Many completion questions become easier once the core clause is visible. Extra phrases can hide a missing verb, duplicate a subject, or make an incorrect option sound more sophisticated than it is.

Practice reducing long sentences to their skeleton. Cross out prepositional phrases, appositives, and relative clauses temporarily, then ask what the sentence still needs. This trains structural awareness that also helps with the current TOEFL Build a Sentence task and with parsing dense Reading passages.

A fast structural check asks what the sentence already has and what it still needs. Locate the main subject and finite verb, then identify subordinate clauses, modifiers, and coordination. If the sentence already contains a complete clause, the blank may require a connector or modifier rather than another independent verb. This habit prevents candidates from choosing an option simply because its meaning seems plausible. Grammar questions become much easier when the missing function is identified before the answer choices are evaluated.

Subject-verb agreement is often hidden by intervening phrases

A singular subject can be separated from its verb by a long phrase containing plural nouns. Candidates who match the verb to the nearest noun can choose the wrong form. The solution is to identify the true grammatical subject before evaluating agreement.

Collect examples in which the subject is followed by phrases such as “of the students,” “with several features,” or “along with other results.” Rewrite them with the intervening phrase removed. This makes the agreement relationship visible and helps the pattern become automatic.

Long noun phrases create agreement traps because the noun nearest the verb may not be the grammatical subject. Prepositional phrases, relative clauses, parenthetical information, and expressions such as 'a series of' can distract attention from the head noun that controls the verb. Practice by temporarily removing nonessential material and reading the core clause. Then restore the modifiers and check that meaning is still clear. This technique is also valuable in writing because it helps candidates find agreement errors in sentences they created themselves.

Verb tense and aspect should reflect the timeline, not one trigger word

Completion tasks often test whether the event is completed, ongoing, repeated, or connected to another time. Instead of memorizing isolated signal words, build a timeline. Ask when the action happens and whether another event changes the required tense or aspect.

Academic writing frequently moves between established knowledge, a specific study, and interpretation. Present tense may describe a general fact, past tense a completed experiment, and present perfect a continuing research trend. Recognizing these functions improves both grammar questions and the candidate’s own writing.

Tense choices are easier when the sequence of events is sketched explicitly. Ask whether an action is completed, ongoing, repeated, earlier than another past event, or connected to the present. Time expressions provide clues, but they do not replace the logic of the sentence. A candidate who relies on one memorized keyword can choose the wrong form when the context changes. Rewriting a missed item with two or three different timelines is a useful way to understand why the original form was required.

Connectors reveal the logical relationship between clauses

Words such as although, because, therefore, while, unless, and despite are not interchangeable. They signal contrast, cause, result, condition, or concession and have different grammatical requirements. A correct completion must satisfy both meaning and structure.

Practice by labeling the relationship before choosing a connector. Is the second idea a contrast, a cause, an effect, or a condition? Then check whether the option requires a noun phrase or a full clause. This two-step process prevents vocabulary familiarity from overpowering grammar.

Before selecting a connector, state the relationship in plain language: addition, contrast, cause, result, condition, concession, sequence, or example. Then check whether the grammar of the connector fits the sentence pattern. Some linking expressions join clauses directly, while others operate as adverbial transitions and require different punctuation. This two-step process—meaning first, structure second—prevents candidates from treating similar-looking transition words as interchangeable. It also improves coherence in current TOEFL writing tasks.

Relative clauses and modifiers must attach to the right idea

A modifier placed beside the wrong noun can create a sentence that is grammatically possible but logically absurd. Relative pronouns also need a clear antecedent. Sentence completion practice is useful because it forces candidates to ask exactly what a phrase describes.

Read the completed sentence aloud and paraphrase it. If the sentence accidentally suggests that a building conducted a study or that a result performed an action, the modifier is misplaced. This same habit improves TOEFL writing because awkward modifier placement can make otherwise good ideas difficult to understand.

Modifier errors often create sentences that are technically recognizable but logically odd. A relative clause should clearly refer to the noun it modifies, and an introductory participial phrase should have an appropriate subject immediately available. When the attachment is ambiguous, move the modifier next to its intended referent and see whether the sentence becomes clearer. This practice develops a useful editing instinct: grammatical accuracy and reader interpretation are connected, so the best sentence is not merely possible but unambiguous.

Parallel structure makes lists and comparisons easier to control

Academic sentences often coordinate several actions or ideas. Items joined by and, or, but, or a comparison structure should normally use compatible grammatical forms. A sentence that begins “to analyze, measuring, and interpretation” reveals a parallelism problem even before the content is considered.

Underline the coordinated elements and compare their form. If the first is an infinitive, noun phrase, or -ing form, the others should fit the same pattern unless the grammar clearly calls for something else. Parallelism also improves clarity in essays because readers can see the relationship between points immediately.

Parallelism is a pattern problem. Coordinated items should normally share a comparable grammatical form, and comparisons should align like with like. Candidates can test a sentence by isolating the repeated frame and inserting each coordinated element into it. If one item requires a different structure, the sentence needs revision. This method works for lists, paired conjunctions, comparative constructions, and academic writing in which several methods, causes, or outcomes are presented together.

Word order matters in questions, inversion, and complex noun phrases

English word order carries grammatical information. Candidates should recognize the normal sequence of subject, verb, object, and modifiers, as well as special patterns after negative adverbials or in question structures. Options containing the right words can still be wrong if the order is unnatural.

Noun phrases deserve attention because academic English often packs several modifiers before a head noun. Learn to find the main noun first, then identify which adjectives, participles, or nouns modify it. This helps both completion questions and reading comprehension.

The current TOEFL still rewards grammar, but through integrated tasks

In the 2026 test, grammar is not isolated as an old-style Structure section. It appears through Build a Sentence, writing responses, speaking accuracy, word-completion reading items, and the ability to understand complex text. That makes grammar practice more valuable when it is connected to actual communication.

The current TOEFL structure should therefore guide the study plan. Use legacy sentence-completion questions as targeted grammar drills, then apply the same structures in short writing, speaking, and reading exercises so the knowledge transfers to the live test.

Since January 2026, the TOEFL iBT no longer uses an old-style standalone sentence-completion section as the defining grammar measure. Grammar is still visible in tasks such as Build a Sentence and in the clarity of written and spoken responses. That makes structural drills useful only when they transfer. After completing a grammar set, candidates should apply the same pattern in a short email, an academic response, or a sentence-building exercise so that recognition becomes production rather than remaining a test-taking trick.

Review errors by grammar category rather than question number

An error log should label the underlying rule: agreement, tense, connector, clause type, modifier, article, preposition, parallelism, or word order. Once a category appears repeatedly, pause mixed practice and work on that pattern directly. The objective is to reduce recurring causes, not merely raise the score on one question set.

TOEFL sentence correction material can be paired with completion practice because the two directions reinforce each other: one asks what belongs in the sentence, while the other asks what prevents the sentence from being accurate. Together they provide useful grammar training even though neither label is a standalone section of the current TOEFL iBT.

A useful weekly review converts the error log into a short grammar agenda. If several mistakes involve clause boundaries, spend the next session combining and separating clauses; if word form is the recurring problem, build small word-family sets and use each form in a sentence. Re-test the same patterns after a delay instead of immediately repeating the identical questions. Spaced retrieval shows whether the rule has become usable knowledge and keeps sentence-completion practice connected to the broader language control required across the TOEFL.
