The ACI name creates an unusual search problem. There is an American Concrete Institute with its own construction credentials, but the 3I0 examination codes historically grouped under ACI belong to the ACI Dealing and Operations Certificates of the ACI Financial Markets Association (ACI FMA), not concrete engineering. Confusing the two bodies changes the subject entirely, so a useful certification account must start with the precise issuing organization and the financial markets in which its qualifications are used.
ACI FMA is concerned with knowledge and professional standards in foreign exchange, money markets and related financial instruments. Its qualifications address people whose day-to-day decisions affect prices, funding, settlement, treasury risk and conduct in wholesale markets. The educational progression is not a universal rank ladder that every employee must complete. A dealer, an operations analyst and an experienced treasurer have different competency gaps, even when their activities touch the same transaction.
A multinational manufacturer managing foreign-currency payments and a bank market-maker may both rely on exchange-rate products, yet their training priorities differ. The manufacturer needs to understand its commercial exposures and internal hedging policies; the bank may need a deeper command of pricing, market liquidity and client-order conduct. Operations staff must know how both institutions confirm and settle what was agreed. ACI FMA qualifications are most useful when each learner can identify which part of that chain he or she is responsible for, and where an error could affect someone else.
On a dealing desk, an apparently simple FX trade contains several decisions. The participant must understand which currency is bought or sold, the value date, the quotation convention, how a forward price differs from a spot price and how market liquidity affects executable levels. For an interest-rate instrument, a decision about tenor or benchmark may change exposure materially. Product vocabulary without quantitative understanding is not enough; the economic meaning of the contract determines both the risk and the control environment.
ACI's Dealing Certificate is designed for entrants to dealing rooms and adjacent wholesale-markets functions. Its current syllabus covers foreign exchange, interest rates and commodities, together with relevant derivatives and the conduct environment. The official ACI FMA catalogue describes the ACI Dealing Certificate New Version, currently associated with examination code 002-101. That is different from the 3I0 series shown on older study-library pages. A learner preparing for a current official assessment should therefore start with the association's active syllabus and not infer that a historical code represents an available booking option.
The Dealing syllabus rewards an integrated view. A currency forward is not just a formula; it reflects relationships between currencies and interest rates. An interest-rate swap is not just a diagram of fixed and floating legs; it creates exposures that need valuation, limits, collateral arrangements and counterparty monitoring. Someone who sees those links can explain the commercial purpose of a trade and recognize when an apparently routine transaction creates an unintended position.
The qualification's core learning begins with market participants, instruments and conventions, but quickly moves into practical mechanics. Candidates should be comfortable interpreting prices, calculating or reasoning about cash flows, recognizing what makes a rate fixed or floating, and distinguishing spot transactions, forwards, futures, swaps and options. They also need to recognize that the same term can carry a different meaning across asset classes: a 'spread' in a deposit quote is not automatically comparable to an option premium or a credit spread.
Technical competence is inseparable from market behavior. The FX Global Code and related conduct expectations address fair execution, information sharing, governance, risk management and settlement practices. A desk can have sophisticated pricing tools and still create material problems through inadequate confidentiality controls or poor communication around orders. Training that treats ethics as an appendix misses a central reason the industry maintains professional standards.
Older exam references still identify ACI Dealing Certificate code 3I0-008 and code 3I0-012. These are useful identifiers when interpreting historical materials, not proof that either code is an active examination in October 2026. Content may still illustrate timeless notions such as cross-currency quotations, yet benchmark conventions and exam objectives can change. Candidates should reconcile any older example with ACI FMA's current publications before committing the rule or calculation to memory.
The strongest preparation approach is to understand how a trade flows from commercial motivation to final settlement. For example, a corporation expecting a foreign-currency receivable may use a forward to reduce exchange-rate uncertainty. The treasury desk quotes a price; the operations team verifies trade details and settlement instructions; risk oversight monitors counterparty and limit exposures. Each function views the same transaction differently, and the Dealing Certificate provides the foundation for explaining why.
A front-office dealer can execute a correctly priced transaction that still fails operationally. Settlement instructions may be wrong, a confirmation may contain an unexpected date or an exception may remain unresolved until payment cut-off. ACI's Operations Certificate New Version, listed by ACI FMA under current code 002-201, concentrates on the middle- and back-office knowledge required to complete financial-market transactions accurately and independently from the trading function.
This distinction is more than an organizational chart. Independent confirmation and reconciliation provide a check on what was agreed; sound settlement procedures reduce the risk of sending funds to an incorrect account; timely exception management protects both counterparties from compounding errors. Operations employees need enough instrument knowledge to understand what they are confirming. Without it, an unusual cash flow might be accepted simply because a screen shows the expected number of fields.
ACI FMA's current Operations Certificate addresses the financial markets environment, FX, rates, FICC derivatives and practical market applications. It also recognizes the department's responsibility for accurate settlement and documentation. The historical 3I0-013 Operations Certificate reflects an earlier version of this professional area. It should not be confused with the association's live code, syllabus or scheduling arrangements.
Operations knowledge becomes particularly important in periods of market stress. A volatile day may bring unusually high confirmation volume, failed trades, margin calls and counterparty queries. What looks like a minor static-data problem during normal trading can become a major exposure when the desk is handling many urgent transactions. Well-trained operations teams create operational resilience through documented processes, clear escalation and disciplined reconciliation, not by simply trying to work faster.
Settlement risk becomes especially visible when two currencies change hands in different time zones. A trade can be economically hedged and correctly priced while the institution still faces exposure if it pays one currency and does not receive the other as expected. Operational teams must know the contractual settlement instructions, cut-off times, holidays and escalation points. Payment-versus-payment arrangements can reduce principal risk where supported, but they do not remove the need to reconcile cash flows and investigate failed settlements. This is the kind of link between dealing-room decisions and back-office processes that makes the operations qualification distinct from a market-pricing course.
Professionals with deeper treasury or wholesale-markets responsibilities may consider the ACI Diploma. ACI FMA introduced a revised Diploma examination based on a June 2025 syllabus, with the previous July 2024 version expiring by March 31, 2026. The current programme builds on dealing and operations concepts but asks candidates to handle more advanced interactions among FX, commodities, interest rates, derivatives and risk.
The syllabus covers financial markets and commodities, interest rates, linear derivatives, option-based derivatives and principles of risk. Those areas require more than recognition of product names. A person assessing a hedging strategy must reason about basis exposure, non-linear outcomes, sensitivity to market moves and the effect of the hedge on cash flow or funding. Good answers are economically coherent: an instrument may reduce one source of risk while introducing another, such as liquidity, counterparty or option-related exposure.
ACI FMA describes the Diploma as suitable for senior dealers, bank and corporate treasurers and experienced operations professionals. It recommends prior foundation knowledge but does not make completion of both foundational certificates an absolute prerequisite for registration. That nuance matters for people with years of relevant work experience. The proper starting point is whether the syllabus matches their competence, not whether a marketing diagram places them on a prescribed ladder.
Financial-market exams change because markets change. Benchmark reforms, altered settlement practices and new conduct expectations can make an older worked example misleading even when its arithmetic is internally correct. An overnight-rate convention might require attention to compounding and observation periods; an FX example might rely on a market convention that differs by currency pair. Candidates should learn to read current instrument specifications and not rely on memory of a historical rate name.
Quantitative preparation works best when calculations are tied to decisions. Instead of memorizing a forward-points formula in isolation, explain which economic variables move the points and why the sign matters. For a swap, connect fixed and floating payments with valuation and interest-rate sensitivity. For an option, describe what the holder acquires, where losses or gains are asymmetric and how the position differs from a forward. The ability to justify a result is more durable than reproducing one practice answer.
Conduct is a separate test of competence. A dealer must know how to manage confidential information and conflicts; an operations specialist needs to preserve independent checking; a risk professional must be able to challenge an exposure without being pressured into accepting a convenient estimate. Credentials support those behaviors only when firms reinforce them through controls, supervision and incentives. Completing an examination does not grant trading authority or replace an institution's internal approvals.
Benchmarks and market conventions should also be handled with professional skepticism. Two quotes may look comparable while referring to different day-count methods, fixing dates, tenors, settlement dates or collateral arrangements. An incorrect convention can produce a pricing discrepancy that survives routine arithmetic checks because the calculation itself was executed correctly. Candidates should practice identifying the economic assumptions before entering figures into a formula. In regulated markets, the record of how a rate was obtained, used and communicated can matter almost as much as the resulting number. That is why ethics, documentation and technical fluency cannot be treated as separate exam topics.
A newcomer to wholesale trading often gains the most from the Dealing Certificate. Someone working with confirmations, cash movements, collateral or settlement breaks may find the Operations Certificate closer to the decisions they already make. A senior professional who routinely evaluates cross-market exposures may choose the Diploma. The distinctions are functional, and the programmes can complement one another without implying identical eligibility or exam format.
Before booking, consult ACI FMA's active examination catalogue, current syllabus and formulae sheet. The association currently lists 002-101 for Dealing, 002-201 for Operations and 003-102 for the June 2025 Diploma. The 3I0 codes reflect earlier study references rather than ACI FMA's current examination timetable. Matching the right issuer, current exam version and actual treasury role is more useful than collecting similar-sounding 'ACI' materials from unrelated industries.
