The 3I0-013 code is associated in historical exam catalogues with the ACI Operations Certificate, but ACI Financial Markets Association no longer uses that identifier for its live operations qualification. The current program is the ACI Operations Certificate New Version, registered as 002-201. ACI also states that the older Operations Certificate exam expired on September 30, 2021, so candidates should not prepare as though an archived 3I0-013 blueprint is still the active exam.
The modern qualification remains recognizable in purpose. It is designed for treasury back-office and middle-office professionals and other support, audit, compliance, risk, product-control, and vendor roles that need to understand how financial-market transactions move from execution through confirmation, settlement, control, and reporting. The current syllabus also uses the same five broad market topic baskets as ACI’s New Version Dealing Certificate, but the professional perspective is operational.
ACI’s live registration system lists 002-201 for the Operations Certificate New Version. That is the administrative fact that should govern booking and exam preparation. The legacy 3I0-013 page is useful for historical discovery, not for proving that an old code, question count, or topic structure remains valid.
The current exam has 70 multiple-choice questions in two hours. ACI sets an overall pass level of 60 percent and a minimum of 50 percent in each of five topic baskets. This differs from the older Operations Certificate, which ACI says had ten baskets, 75 questions, and lower per-basket minimums before expiring in 2021.
Candidates should therefore cross-check any old notes against the modern syllabus. The objective is not to discard operational knowledge; it is to remove outdated exam architecture and refresh market references, conduct expectations, and product conventions.
Front-office execution receives attention because it creates the trade, but operational quality determines whether the trade is captured, confirmed, settled, reconciled, and reflected correctly in systems and accounts. A profitable trade can still produce loss or dispute if details are wrong or settlement fails.
Operations professionals need independence from the front office while maintaining close communication. They should be able to challenge inconsistent trade details, investigate breaks, and escalate exceptions without altering records merely to make a reconciliation disappear.
The current qualification reflects that control role. Candidates should view each instrument as a lifecycle: execution, capture, confirmation, payment or delivery, reconciliation, exception handling, and record retention. Product knowledge supports the process rather than existing as an abstract market theory.
An operations team processes transactions across currencies, counterparties, infrastructures, and jurisdictions. Understanding market participants, central banks, settlement systems, codes of conduct, and product conventions helps staff recognize when an instruction does not fit the transaction it claims to represent.
Conduct also matters because operations personnel handle sensitive information and can observe unusual activity. Segregation, confidentiality, escalation, and accurate recordkeeping support market integrity. The back office should not become a passive data-entry function that simply accepts front-office instructions without control.
Current ACI material also incorporates the broader professional expectations reflected in the FX Global Code and industry standards. Legacy notes should be refreshed whenever they describe procedures or benchmarks that have changed.
FX processing depends on accurate trade economics and accurate settlement data. Currency pair, buy/sell direction, value date, amount, counterparty, account, and settlement instructions must all agree. An error that appears small in a trade ticket can send funds to the wrong place or create an unmatched confirmation.
Operations candidates should understand spot, forwards, swaps, and related cash flows well enough to validate what the system is showing. They are not being trained as dealers, but they need to know when a value date, forward amount, or currency direction is inconsistent with the product.
Settlement risk is a core operational concern because the two currency legs may not be exchanged simultaneously. Controls, cut-off times, confirmation discipline, and appropriate settlement arrangements help reduce exposure to failed or mismatched payments.
Deposits, short-term instruments, bonds, and rate products depend on dates, day-count conventions, principal, rate, coupon or discount mechanics, and payment schedules. Operations staff must capture the right conventions because a system can calculate the wrong amount perfectly if the inputs are wrong.
Candidates should practice reconciling cash-flow expectations. What should be paid on the value date? What amount returns at maturity? When is interest accrued or paid? Which currency and account are involved? These questions turn theoretical product knowledge into operational control.
The same reasoning applies to exceptions. A break is not solved by forcing two numbers to match. The team should determine whether the cause is trade capture, static data, rate convention, settlement instruction, timing, fee, or counterparty information, then correct the underlying issue.
Derivatives can generate multiple cash flows, resets, margin movements, exercises, expiries, or other lifecycle events. Operations staff need enough product understanding to know which events should occur and when, even when pricing responsibility belongs elsewhere.
Options illustrate the point. Exercise or expiry changes whether an underlying transaction is created, while premium settlement follows its own timing. Swaps require accurate schedules and rate resets. Futures introduce margin and exchange processes. A missed event can create financial loss even when the original trade was captured correctly.
Candidates should learn the operational consequence of product features instead of memorizing definitions alone. Ask what data the feature creates, which date matters, which cash flow follows, and how an exception would be detected.
Confirmation checks that the parties agree on the economic terms. Settlement completes the required transfer. Reconciliation compares independent records. Investigation explains differences. These are related controls, but none makes the others unnecessary.
A matched confirmation can still settle incorrectly if payment instructions are wrong. A settled transaction can still be booked to the wrong account. A reconciliation can identify the break but does not resolve its cause. Candidates should understand where each control sits and what evidence it provides.
Operational resilience depends on timely exception management. Aging breaks, repeated manual adjustments, or unexplained overrides can signal process weakness. Strong teams distinguish a one-off timing difference from a recurring control problem and escalate accordingly.
Static-data governance supports that chain. Counterparty identifiers, settlement instructions, calendars, account details, and product reference data are reused across many transactions. An incorrect static field can therefore create repeated breaks at scale. Changes to sensitive settlement data deserve independent verification and controlled authorization.
Operations teams also need clear cut-off management. A correct payment instruction received too late can still fail to settle on time. Candidates should understand how calendars, time zones, market cut-offs, and escalation procedures affect the practical completion of a transaction.
The related 3I0-012 ACI Dealing Certificate and 3I0-008 focus more heavily on market competence from a dealing perspective. Operations candidates encounter the same FX, rates, and derivative instruments but study them through settlement, processing, control, and support responsibilities.
This distinction helps candidates avoid studying the wrong depth. An operations professional should understand pricing relationships well enough to recognize errors, but the role is not primarily to generate client prices. Conversely, a dealer should understand operational dependencies without becoming the settlement function.
The current ACI education structure treats both as foundations for more advanced development. Candidates choosing between them should start with job function: execution and market dealing versus processing, settlement, and control.
A useful comparison exercise is to take one FX forward or interest-rate transaction and write two checklists: what the dealer must decide before execution and what operations must verify after execution. The overlap reveals shared product knowledge, while the differences clarify why ACI maintains distinct dealing and operations pathways.
Historical 3I0-013 questions may still reinforce concepts such as confirmations, settlement, reconciliations, trade capture, product cash flows, and operational risk. They become less reliable when they depend on retired systems, old benchmark references, or the ten-basket exam structure.
Prepare from the current 002-201 syllabus and current ACI formula/reference material, then use older questions selectively. Track performance by the five current topic baskets because the live exam requires a minimum score in each basket as well as the overall pass mark.
Most importantly, do not confuse an actively updated third-party page with an actively administered exam code. ACI’s official registration path controls. The legacy page should direct candidates toward the current Operations Certificate New Version while preserving useful historical context.
The 2026 ACI FMA Handbook and current exam materials also mean that conduct and operational expectations continue to evolve. Candidates should date-stamp their preparation resources and replace any legacy process description that conflicts with the current official syllabus, formula sheet, or handbook guidance.
