OGA-031 ArchiMate 3 Part 1 is the Foundation examination in The Open Group’s current ArchiMate certification path. The exam is built around accurate knowledge of the modeling language rather than around generic enterprise-architecture theory. Candidates are expected to recognize the meaning of elements, relationships, layers, aspects, viewpoints, and other language concepts with enough precision to interpret models correctly.
The Open Group’s current ArchiMate program is aligned to the ArchiMate 3.2 specification. The Part 1 exam uses 40 simple multiple-choice questions, allows 60 minutes, is closed book, and requires 24 correct answers for a 60 percent passing mark. Those numbers make the exam look compact, but the challenge is density: several options can sound architecturally plausible while only one matches the language semantics exactly.
Preparation therefore works best when candidates treat ArchiMate as a formal visual language. Memorizing a gallery of icons can create false confidence. A stronger approach is to learn what each concept represents, what relationships are permitted or meaningful, and how a model communicates a concern to a particular stakeholder.
The first version-control task is to separate today’s Foundation exam from older ArchiMate material. The site archive still contains historical material such as OG0-021 ArchiMate 2 Part 1, and many concepts remain recognizable across versions. That does not make an older objective list a safe substitute for current preparation. The Open Group identifies ArchiMate 3 as the active certification program and the 3.2 specification as the current body of knowledge for that program.
When legacy questions are useful, label them as legacy before studying them. Ask whether the underlying concept survived, whether terminology changed, and whether a relationship or notation rule was refined. This prevents a common failure mode in certification preparation: scoring well on familiar historical questions while building a mixed-version mental model that produces errors when current wording is tested precisely.
ArchiMate becomes easier when candidates stop seeing it as a long list of unrelated symbols. The language organizes concepts around structure, behavior, and information, then expresses them across business, application, and technology concerns as well as motivation, strategy, physical, and implementation-and-migration concepts. The exam rewards candidates who understand that organizing logic rather than memorizing each element in isolation.
One useful study exercise is to take an unfamiliar element and locate it conceptually before recalling its exact definition. Is it active structure, behavior, passive structure, or a motivation concept? Which layer or extension does it belong to? What kind of thing can perform it, be served by it, or be affected by it? That reasoning creates a scaffold that makes definitions easier to retrieve under time pressure.
Many weak attempts focus heavily on element names but lightly on relationships. Yet architecture meaning often sits in the connection. Assignment, realization, serving, access, triggering, flow, influence, association, composition, and aggregation are not interchangeable arrows. Each expresses a different semantic claim about the connected concepts, and the direction of that claim matters.
Practice should therefore include sentence-level translation. Read a relationship in plain language before looking at the diagram: “this component realizes this service,” “this process accesses this business object,” or “this application service serves this business behavior.” Then reverse the exercise by turning a short business statement into the most appropriate relation. If the verbal statement is unclear, the graphic notation will usually be unclear too.
One of ArchiMate’s strengths is that it can show how a business need is supported through applications and technology without collapsing all those concerns into one undifferentiated diagram. Services are especially important because they express externally visible behavior offered to another concept. A business service, application service, and technology service sit at different layers but share that idea of exposed behavior.
Candidates should practice tracing a simple thread from customer-facing value to supporting systems. A business process may use an application service, which is realized by application behavior, which in turn depends on a technology service. The purpose is not to draw the maximum number of boxes. It is to understand how ArchiMate makes dependency visible while preserving the distinction between what a layer offers and how that behavior is internally performed.
Architecture models are not limited to operational structure. Stakeholders, drivers, assessments, goals, outcomes, principles, requirements, constraints, capabilities, resources, and courses of action help connect architecture work to organizational intent. Questions become much easier when the candidate understands the difference between a reason for change, a desired end state, and a statement that constrains how the change should be achieved.
A practical way to learn these concepts is to model a small transformation story. Start with a stakeholder concern, identify the driver, describe an assessment of the current situation, define a goal and expected outcome, then express the requirement or course of action that responds to it. This sequence forces the learner to distinguish concepts that can look similar when encountered only as glossary definitions.
ArchiMate models are useful because they can be organized into views for different concerns. A chief financial officer, product manager, application owner, security architect, and operations lead can all care about the same initiative while needing different information. The modeling language supports that selective communication; it does not imply that every diagram should contain every relevant element.
When reviewing a view, ask what decision it supports and what the intended reader needs to see. A concise view can be better than a comprehensive one if it makes the relevant dependency or change impact clearer. This perspective also prevents candidates from treating viewpoint names as labels to memorize without understanding why the viewpoint exists or which concepts would be useful inside it.
The exam allows about ninety seconds per question on average, but candidates should not begin preparation by racing. Early sessions should be untimed and explanation-heavy. For every missed item, write the exact distinction that decided the answer: wrong relationship direction, confused element category, mixed layer, misunderstood motivation term, or overlooked wording in the stem. Patterns appear quickly when errors are classified this way.
Only after the distinctions become stable should timing be compressed. At that point, short mixed sets are useful because the real exam does not present concepts in a tidy study order. The goal is to reach a state where precise interpretation feels fast because the underlying model is clear, not because the learner has memorized the position of answers from a repeated question set.
Candidates who plan to continue should understand the relationship between Part 1 and OGA-032 ArchiMate 3 Part 2. Part 1 validates knowledge of the language; Part 2 moves toward scenario-based application and uses open-book reference material. The strongest Foundation preparation therefore includes small amounts of interpretation practice even though the assessment itself is knowledge-focused.
Try explaining why a model is appropriate, not merely whether a definition is correct. Which stakeholder concern does the model address? Which relationship carries the key meaning? What would become ambiguous if an element were removed? Those questions turn factual knowledge into usable modeling skill and reduce the jump in difficulty when moving from Foundation recall to Practitioner judgment.
Another useful drill is to read models without relying on color or layout conventions. Tooling can make a diagram look intuitive even when the formal semantics are weak. Cover the legend, identify each element by type, read each relationship in its stated direction, and then summarize the model in ordinary language. If the summary changes when the diagram is rearranged visually, the candidate may be relying on presentation rather than on the language itself.
Candidates should also distinguish a valid model from a useful model. A diagram can obey notation rules and still fail to answer the stakeholder’s question because it includes too much detail, uses the wrong abstraction level, or hides the dependency that matters. Foundation questions focus on knowledge, but learning this distinction makes definitions easier to remember because every concept is connected to a communication purpose.
Keep a small “confusable concepts” list during revision. Pairs such as service versus interface, function versus process, realization versus assignment, goal versus outcome, and capability versus course of action deserve side-by-side definitions and one original example each. The list should shrink over time. If the same pair keeps causing errors, return to the specification and rebuild the distinction before attempting more mixed questions.
Finally, practice with fresh diagrams. Repeating the same examples can create image recognition rather than language knowledge. Redraw a familiar scenario using different labels, rearrange the layout, or substitute another industry while preserving the semantics. If the candidate can still identify the same element and relationship logic, the knowledge is portable enough for an unfamiliar exam question.
The Open Group certifications include several architecture-related programs, but OGA-031 has a specific purpose: establishing disciplined knowledge of ArchiMate as a modeling language. It is not a substitute for TOGAF method knowledge, nor is TOGAF a substitute for ArchiMate notation. In practice, the two can complement one another because one can guide architecture development while the other helps express architecture views.
A strong final review should therefore return to the language itself. Recheck the current 3.2 concepts, retest relationship semantics, interpret unfamiliar diagrams, and verify any disputed point against current authoritative material. Passing OGA-031 is most valuable when the candidate leaves with a precise visual vocabulary that can be used after the exam, not merely a short-lived bank of remembered answers.
