VNX100: Building the Foundations for Versa Secure SD-WAN

The Versa Certified SD-WAN Associate (VNX100) is the foundation exam in Versa Networks’ current certification program. Unlike older exam codes that survive online long after a vendor has changed direction, VNX100 remains an active entry point in 2026. It is aimed at engineers who need a working understanding of secure SD-WAN rather than a narrow ability to repeat product terminology, and Versa positions it as the prerequisite for more advanced SD-WAN-focused certifications.

That role makes VNX100 broader than it first appears. The exam reaches from traditional WAN fundamentals into overlays, tunneling, routing, virtual routing and forwarding, zero-touch provisioning, application-aware traffic steering, quality of service, security basics, monitoring, and the responsibilities of the major Versa platform components. Candidates who study the product without understanding networking fundamentals usually struggle when a question changes the topology or asks why one design choice is preferable to another.

Versa currently delivers the exam through Kryterion as a remotely proctored test with 60 multiple-choice questions and a 90-minute time limit. The current exam price is $100, and Versa certifications are valid for two years. Those mechanics matter, but the more important planning point is that VNX100 sits within the wider set of Versa Networks certifications. The associate credential is meant to establish a common technical vocabulary before candidates move into specialist administration or security work.

VNX100 begins with the difference between an underlay and an overlay

Secure SD-WAN only makes sense when the candidate can separate the transport network from the logical network built across it. The underlay is the collection of physical and provider connections that carry packets between sites: broadband, MPLS, internet circuits, cellular links, and other transport. The overlay is the logical fabric created over those links so that routing policy, encryption, segmentation, and application treatment can be controlled independently of the raw carrier topology.

This distinction explains why SD-WAN can use several transports at the same branch without forcing applications to understand each circuit individually. Tunnels create the overlay, path measurements describe current conditions, and centralized policy determines how traffic should use available paths. A candidate should be comfortable reasoning about what happens when one underlay link fails, when latency increases on a preferred path, or when a new branch is added with a different mix of transports.

VNX100 also expects familiarity with tunneling and VPN concepts such as GRE, IPsec, and Layer 3 VPNs. The useful way to study them is not as a dictionary. Ask what each mechanism contributes to reachability, isolation, or security, and what additional control-plane information is needed to make the overlay useful at scale.

The Versa control architecture divides orchestration, control, and analytics

One of the most important exam tasks is keeping the major Versa components distinct. Versa Director provides centralized management and orchestration. Versa Controllers participate in the control functions that allow sites to exchange routing and reachability information across the SD-WAN fabric. Versa Analytics collects and presents operational and performance data. Versa Operating System, commonly shortened to VOS, provides the networking and security functions that run on Versa appliances and virtualized customer-premises equipment.

These components work together, but they solve different problems. Director is where an administrator expects to define or push configuration intent. Controllers help scale the control plane rather than becoming ordinary user-traffic destinations. Analytics helps turn telemetry into operational visibility. VOS at the branch or service edge enforces the forwarding and policy behavior that users ultimately experience.

A strong study habit is to take every management action and assign it to the correct layer. If an exam scenario describes onboarding a branch, changing a template, viewing performance history, learning routes, or applying a traffic policy, first decide whether the task is orchestration, control, analytics, or data-plane enforcement. That classification eliminates many distractors before product-specific details are considered.

Routing knowledge remains essential even in a software-defined WAN

SD-WAN does not remove routing; it adds policy and abstraction around it. VNX100 candidates therefore need to understand basic Border Gateway Protocol behavior, routing relationships, virtual routers, VRFs, and the way routing information reaches the correct segment. A virtual routing and forwarding instance creates a separate routing context, which is fundamental when a shared platform must keep tenants, business units, or service domains isolated.

The exam can combine these ideas with the overlay. A route may be reachable in the underlay while a particular business segment should not be permitted to use it. A branch may advertise networks that must remain isolated from another virtual router. BGP may provide reachability while an SD-WAN policy makes a separate decision about which transport is preferred for an application. Understanding the layers prevents the common mistake of treating “route exists” and “traffic should use this path” as the same question.

IPsec is similarly important because secure overlays depend on confidentiality and integrity as well as reachability. Candidates should know why tunnels are established, what they protect, and why encryption alone does not decide which path is best for voice, SaaS, bulk transfer, or other application classes.

Zero-touch provisioning turns branch deployment into a repeatable process

A large SD-WAN design loses much of its operational value if every appliance requires a lengthy manual build. Versa therefore includes provisioning approaches that let devices be onboarded using centrally prepared information, including URL- and script-based zero-touch provisioning. VNX100 is interested in the operational principle: a branch device should be able to receive enough identity and bootstrap information to join the intended environment and obtain the configuration appropriate to its role.

Templates are central to that model. They reduce configuration drift by separating reusable policy from the particulars of one site. A candidate should understand why a template is safer than copying a configuration manually across dozens of branches, but also why templating does not eliminate the need for validation. Incorrect shared policy can propagate just as efficiently as correct policy.

Think through deployment as a lifecycle: define intent, establish the branch identity, bootstrap connectivity, apply the correct template, verify control-plane formation, confirm data-plane reachability, and then inspect monitoring data. That sequence is more useful than memorizing interface names because it mirrors the troubleshooting logic used when onboarding fails.

Traffic steering depends on application identity and path health

The practical promise of SD-WAN is the ability to select paths based on business intent rather than static reachability alone. VNX100 therefore covers quality of service, class of service, application identification, path monitoring, and traffic steering. A real-time voice flow may value latency, jitter, and packet loss differently from a software update. A critical SaaS application may deserve a preferred transport until its service-level conditions degrade.

Application-aware steering requires two kinds of knowledge: what the traffic is and what the available paths are doing. Classification identifies the application or class. SLA measurements describe path quality. Policy combines those inputs with business priorities. The resulting decision may keep traffic on a preferred path, move it to an alternate circuit, or treat it differently when congestion appears.

For exam preparation, practice explaining the chain from symptom to policy action. If users complain about choppy voice while a low-priority transfer consumes bandwidth, the answer may involve classification and QoS rather than simply adding a new route. If a circuit is reachable but experiencing unacceptable loss, an SLA-driven steering rule may be more relevant than a routing-table change.

Security is built into the platform rather than added as a separate topic

VNX100 is not the specialist security exam, but it expects candidates to understand that secure SD-WAN combines connectivity and protection. Basic security services, secure access, segmentation, encrypted tunnels, and policy enforcement are part of the platform story. The associate-level objective is to recognize where security decisions sit in the architecture and how they interact with routing and application policy.

This matters because the same branch edge may be making forwarding, segmentation, path-selection, and security decisions. An administrator cannot safely troubleshoot one dimension while ignoring the others. A session that fails might be affected by reachability, a security rule, a segment boundary, an IPsec issue, or a path policy. The fastest troubleshooting approach is to identify the layer and then test assumptions in order.

Candidates who want to go deeper into security after the associate level can move toward the VNX326 security specialist path, where firewalling, UTM, SSL inspection, remote access, and security analytics receive much more attention.

Monitoring is what turns policy intent into operational evidence

Versa Director and Versa Analytics are important in VNX100 because administrators need evidence that the network is behaving as designed. Live status can show whether components are reachable and sessions are healthy, while historical analytics can reveal trends that a single snapshot misses. Troubleshooting becomes more reliable when the engineer correlates user complaints with transport health, application performance, path changes, and configuration events.

The exam rewards a structured troubleshooting mindset. Begin with scope: one user, one branch, one application, one segment, or the whole fabric. Confirm underlay reachability before blaming the overlay. Confirm the relevant tunnels and control relationships. Check policy, routing, and security. Then use analytics to determine whether the failure is persistent, intermittent, or tied to performance thresholds.

That workflow also explains why monitoring should be studied as part of design rather than an afterthought. A policy is only useful if the team can tell whether it produced the intended result. Good SD-WAN operations therefore connect configuration, telemetry, and troubleshooting in one continuous loop.

VNX100 should be studied as the first stage of an operating model

The associate exam is most valuable when it prepares a candidate to do more than pass one test. Versa identifies VNX100 as a prerequisite for the VNX301 SD-WAN specialist exam, which goes further into architecture, deployment, routing, high availability, provisioning, and administration. The security specialist route builds on the same foundation from a different operational angle.

A practical study plan should therefore combine three layers. First, review networking fundamentals until overlays, underlays, routing, VPNs, VRFs, and QoS are comfortable. Second, map those concepts to Versa Director, Controller, Analytics, and VOS. Third, work through deployment and troubleshooting scenarios that force several concepts to interact. This is closer to the way the exam describes real operational choices than studying product nouns in isolation.

Because Versa certifications are valid for two years, current knowledge also matters after passing. Recertification can be maintained by taking the same or a higher-level exam, so VNX100 can serve as the beginning of a continuing path rather than a one-time badge. Candidates who leave the exam with a clear mental model of the Versa fabric are better prepared for that progression and for the day-to-day decisions the certification is meant to represent.
