Blue Prism AIE02: Installing and Configuring a Version 6 Environment

AIE02, Installing and Configuring a Blue Prism Version 6.0 Environment, is a legacy Installation Engineer exam. It is not part of SS&C Blue Prism’s current 2026 certification catalog, which now presents a Technical Architect v7 path for automation infrastructure. The old AIE02 scope remains useful as historical environment-engineering material, but candidates should not interpret the ExamCollection page as evidence that the version 6 installation exam is still the current route.

The distinction between installation and architecture is important. AIE02 focused on making the planned environment work: database provisioning, application servers, interactive clients, runtime resources, authentication, certificates, connectivity, and service configuration. The related ATA02 Technical Architect exam focused more on designing the version 6 environment and choosing appropriate patterns. Today those responsibilities are consolidated into the broader current Technical Architect discipline.

The Blue Prism certification family provides the historical context, while the current platform documentation should be used for any real deployment. AIE02 is best studied as a method: understand component dependencies, install them in a controlled order, secure every connection, and prove that the resulting environment can be operated and recovered.

A Blue Prism environment is a multi-tier system

A traditional Blue Prism Enterprise deployment includes a SQL Server database, one or more Blue Prism application servers, interactive clients for development and control, and runtime resources that execute automations. Each tier has different security, availability, and network requirements. Installing the product successfully on one machine does not prove that the distributed environment is correctly configured.

Installation engineers need a connection map. Which components connect to the application server, which services reach the database, how runtime resources receive instructions, and which ports or certificates protect those paths? A connectivity problem becomes much easier to isolate when the expected flow is documented. Without that map, teams often change firewalls, connection modes, or service accounts randomly and create new faults while chasing the original one.

Database provisioning establishes the platform’s shared state

The Blue Prism database stores configuration, process and object definitions, schedules, audit information, queue data, credentials metadata, and operational records. Provisioning therefore requires more than creating an empty database. The installation engineer must use the supported schema-creation process, assign appropriate SQL permissions, verify collation and platform prerequisites, and plan backup, maintenance, and capacity from the start.

Service accounts should receive only the permissions required for the selected connection model. If Windows authentication is used, identity delegation and service configuration become part of the design. If SQL authentication is used, credential protection and rotation matter. The database is also a performance dependency, so installation validation should include latency and connectivity from the application-server tier rather than testing only from an administrator workstation.

Database housekeeping should be planned before growth becomes a problem. Session logs, audit records, and queue history can expand significantly in busy environments. The platform team needs retention policies, maintenance jobs, index health monitoring, backup verification, and capacity alerts appropriate to its regulatory needs. Installation is the moment to establish ownership for those tasks, not merely to create the schema.

Application servers centralize connectivity and control

Blue Prism application servers provide a middle tier between clients or runtime resources and the database in common enterprise architectures. The service must be configured with the correct database connection, communication mode, certificate settings where required, and Windows service identity. Multiple servers can improve availability and capacity, but only if clients are configured to reach them through an appropriate load-balancing or connection strategy.

Installation testing should verify service startup, database access, client login, runtime-resource connectivity, and behavior during an application-server restart. A server that reports “Running” in Windows may still have an invalid database connection or certificate problem. Functional checks from each dependent tier provide stronger evidence than checking the service control panel alone.

Service-account recovery should also be tested. If the Windows service identity changes, expires, or loses rights, the application server may start incorrectly or fail to reach SQL and directory services. Document the required rights and who owns the account. Avoid granting broad local or domain privileges simply because they make installation easier; least privilege reduces the impact of a compromised service.

Interactive clients and runtime resources serve different roles

Interactive clients are used by developers, controllers, and administrators, while runtime resources execute automations under controlled Windows sessions. Installation engineers should resist the temptation to configure runtime resources like ordinary developer desktops. They need stable machine identities, predictable screen conditions for surface automation, required application software, appropriate service or user accounts, and controlled access by support teams.

Runtime-resource registration and startup should be tested after reboot, not just while an engineer is logged in. If Login Agent or unattended startup is part of the design, validate the complete sequence from locked or logged-out state to process execution. The goal is repeatability. A resource that works only after a developer manually opens applications or changes session settings is not ready for production automation.

Application dependencies on runtime resources should be standardized. Browser versions, Office components, Java runtimes, local fonts, mapped drives, and regional settings can all affect surface automation. A production image or configuration-management baseline reduces differences between resources. When resources are built manually one at a time, small configuration drift becomes a recurring source of difficult-to-reproduce failures.

Authentication and Active Directory integration affect every operator

Blue Prism can integrate with Active Directory so enterprise identities and groups participate in platform authentication and role assignment. That integration creates dependencies on domain connectivity, DNS, time synchronization, service accounts, and group design. Installation engineers need to test normal login, denied access, group changes, and behavior when a domain controller is unavailable.

Role mapping should follow least privilege. Developers, controllers, release managers, and platform administrators do not need identical access. The infrastructure team also needs to distinguish Windows or directory authentication from application permissions inside Blue Prism. Successful domain login proves identity; it does not automatically mean the user should be allowed to edit processes, view credentials, or control production schedules.

Certificates and encryption protect platform communication and secrets

Version 6 environments can use encrypted communication and key material to protect sensitive data. The installation engineer needs to understand certificates, trust stores, key rotation, and the consequences of losing encryption keys. A configuration that enables encryption without an operational recovery plan can create an outage when certificates expire or servers are rebuilt.

Credential Manager also depends on secure key management and access control. Secrets should be stored through the platform rather than embedded in processes, and only authorized roles, processes, or resources should be able to retrieve them. During installation, test not only that a credential can be saved but also that unauthorized users cannot reveal or use it outside the intended automation context.

Certificate naming and renewal should be operationally visible. Record the purpose, subject names, issuing authority, expiry date, private-key location, and replacement procedure for each certificate used by the platform. Monitoring should warn well before expiration. A certificate outage is especially frustrating because the environment may appear healthy until the exact moment a trust relationship stops being valid.

High availability has to be proven at component boundaries

Adding a second application server or clustered database does not automatically create a highly available Blue Prism platform. Clients need a way to discover or connect to surviving servers, session behavior must be understood, and dependent infrastructure such as DNS, load balancers, certificates, and Active Directory must also be resilient. Installation engineers should document which component can fail and what the expected user or runtime behavior will be.

A useful acceptance test removes one component at a time. Stop an application server, interrupt a database node where the architecture supports failover, restart a runtime resource, and verify that new work can continue or recover as designed. Record the observed recovery time and any manual steps. Availability is a measured behavior, not a label placed on an architecture diagram.

The current Technical Architect path updates the version-specific installation model

SS&C Blue Prism’s current Technical Architect certification covers platform architecture, data and security, maintenance and troubleshooting, and solution architecture across modern Blue Prism Enterprise and related products. That current scope is broader than the version 6 installation exam. It also reflects newer documentation for authentication servers, APIs, Hub, Interact, next-generation architecture, and current security practices.

AIE02 remains useful as a historical foundation because installation engineers still need disciplined dependency mapping, database setup, service configuration, runtime-resource readiness, identity integration, encryption, and recovery testing. For any live environment, however, use the current product documentation and Technical Architect materials. The old exam teaches how to think about installation; it should not dictate commands or supported versions in a 2026 deployment.

Installation acceptance should follow an end-to-end test script

A completed installer is not an acceptance test. Validate user authentication, process editing, release import, runtime-resource registration, queue access, credential retrieval, scheduled execution, logging, and failover behavior expected by the design. Include at least one representative target application so desktop-session and permissions issues are caught before the environment is handed to developers.

The test results should become part of the operational baseline. When a later upgrade or infrastructure change causes trouble, the team can repeat the same checks and identify which capability regressed. That is the lasting value of AIE02-style discipline: installation becomes a controlled engineering process with evidence, rather than a collection of setup steps performed once and then forgotten.

Documenting the tested build is equally important. Record supported operating-system and SQL versions, Blue Prism release level, communication mode, certificate details, service identities, database location, runtime-resource image version, and the date the acceptance script passed. That baseline gives upgrade projects a known starting point and helps support distinguish an environmental drift problem from a defect in the automation itself.
