AICPA and the CPA Exam: Core Knowledge, Chosen Discipline

The Certified Public Accountant qualification occupies a distinctive place in U.S. business and professional reporting. CPAs are expected to understand financial information, regulatory obligations, ethics and the evidential standards that support confidence in reported numbers. But there is a critical distinction between the exam and the license: the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) develops the Uniform CPA Examination with the wider CPA examination system, while state boards of accountancy determine and administer licensure under their own rules.

That distinction helps candidates avoid a costly misunderstanding. Passing the CPA Exam is essential for the U.S. CPA route, but it does not automatically grant an unrestricted license or fulfill every state's education and experience requirements. The exam measures knowledge and skills relevant to newly licensed CPAs. The authority to offer regulated public-accounting services comes from the appropriate jurisdiction after all licensure conditions are met.

The CPA Exam now combines a common Core with one Discipline

The current CPA Examination has four sections totaling sixteen hours: three required Core assessments and one Discipline chosen by the candidate. The Core sections are Auditing and Attestation (AUD), Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) and Taxation and Regulation (REG). The Discipline options are Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR), Information Systems and Controls (ISC) and Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP). The old Business Environment and Concepts (BEC) section was removed during the CPA Evolution redesign and should not be described as a present choice.

This structure creates a common foundation while acknowledging different early-career specialties. A future auditor, corporate accountant or tax professional must still demonstrate the Core knowledge shared across the profession. The selected Discipline provides deeper assessment in an area of emphasis, but it does not create six different types of CPA license. Passing TCP rather than ISC does not turn the license into a tax-only credential; licensing requirements continue to be determined by the board.

The 2026 Exam Blueprints organize each section by areas and topics, skills and task statements. Candidates should use the blueprint effective on their testing date because accounting standards, taxation and other pronouncements can influence examinable material. A 2024 overview may explain the new architecture accurately while giving outdated detail on the precise weighting or content of a 2026 examination.

AUD evaluates evidence, ethics and professional skepticism

The Auditing and Attestation (AUD) examination assesses the principles needed to plan and perform audit and attestation engagements, evaluate evidence, understand risk and report conclusions under the relevant professional framework. It does not simply test familiarity with an audit report's headings or a collection of memorized assertions.

Professional skepticism is a practical habit. When management provides an explanation for unusual revenue, an auditor should consider its plausibility, available corroboration, incentives and whether the evidence actually addresses the relevant assertion. A confirmation that an invoice exists does not independently prove revenue was earned in the correct period. A bank balance might be accurate while a liability is omitted. Good audit reasoning distinguishes what a procedure established from what remains uncertain.

Internal controls are equally important. A control can be well designed but fail in operation, or operate reliably while failing to address the material risk. Evaluating the difference means understanding transaction flows, management override, information-system dependencies and the nature of assurance required. The auditor must also recognize independence and ethical boundaries: an engagement cannot retain credibility if the professional's objectivity is compromised.

AUD knowledge overlaps with fraud examination but is not identical to it. The ACFE fraud examination discipline often begins with an allegation or specific suspicious event and focuses on uncovering what occurred. An independent financial-statement audit has a distinct opinion objective and scope. Auditors consider fraud risk, but a standard audit is not a promise to investigate every suspected wrongdoing across the organization.

FAR and REG build the shared reporting foundation

FAR covers the accounting and reporting concepts expected of newly licensed CPAs, including recognition, measurement, presentation, disclosure and the interpretation of financial statements. The ability to follow an entry from transaction to statement matters more than knowing one journal-entry format in isolation. Accounting choices can affect performance reporting, covenant calculations, tax positions and management decisions; careful professionals must understand why a standard requires a particular treatment.

A recurring challenge is distinguishing an accounting estimate from an error or management preference. When a liability depends on uncertain future events, the question is not simply which number looks conservative. It is what reporting framework applies, which evidence supports the estimate and how uncertainty should be disclosed. The exam's conceptual framework rewards coherent application rather than rote recitation of individual examples.

REG addresses taxation, business law and associated professional responsibilities under U.S. requirements. Tax rules can change through legislation and administrative guidance, and the examination includes policies governing when new pronouncements enter the blueprint. Candidates need to avoid building a study plan around a tax rule that was accurate for a past exam year but is no longer the applicable testing rule.

These Core sections are linked by ethical decision-making. A tax position, audit conclusion or accounting estimate should be defensible from authority and evidence, not merely attractive to a client. A CPA must also recognize when a question requires a specialist or legal advice beyond the engagement's ordinary scope.

FAR is not limited to reproducing journal entries. Candidates must interpret financial reporting across different types of entities and transactions, including areas where the objectives of financial statements differ from everyday commercial profit measurement. Not-for-profit and governmental reporting topics require care because restrictions, classifications and accounting bases affect what users can infer from a set of statements. Studying those areas as isolated multiple-choice facts is less effective than asking which reporting entity is involved, what standard applies and what decision the information is intended to support. The same habit of identifying the applicable framework before calculating an answer is fundamental to good professional accounting work.

The selected Discipline should reflect a genuine specialty

BAR extends reporting into deeper analysis, accounting and business interpretation. ISC focuses on information systems, controls, data and related assurance issues. TCP advances tax compliance and planning. A candidate may select a Discipline aligned with anticipated work, existing strengths or the areas where additional study would be most useful. There is no rule that a particular employer function dictates one mandatory Discipline for the license.

ISC has become especially relevant because assurance increasingly depends on systems rather than only paper records. A practitioner may need to understand how access permissions, change management, interfaces and service-organization controls affect the evidence used for an audit. A technically strong application does not guarantee that its reporting controls are well designed. Conversely, an auditor should not treat every IT risk as a reason to become a software engineer.

TCP candidates require careful application of tax principles to entity structures and planning decisions. A plausible optimization can be inappropriate if it ignores substantive restrictions, information reporting or future consequences. BAR candidates face different challenges in connecting technical reporting judgments with business analysis. The common expectation across these Disciplines is to explain a professional decision, not merely produce a numerical answer.

The discipline decision can be informed by the work a candidate expects to do, but it should not be treated as a permanent license restriction. A professional selecting Information Systems and Controls may want to develop technology risk and control-assurance expertise; someone choosing Tax Compliance and Planning may prefer planning problems that require more analysis than routine form preparation. Business Analysis and Reporting offers a different emphasis on advanced accounting and business decisions. Whichever discipline is selected, the CPA Exam still supports one common CPA license subject to the relevant jurisdiction's requirements. A credential holder's actual engagement responsibilities and competence must be evaluated separately from the label on the discipline once selected during examination.

How the exam is assessed and how candidates should prepare

AICPA's official exam resources describe multiple-choice questions and task-based simulations organized into five testlets per section. Simulations can require candidates to interpret exhibits, research information, reconcile data and reach conclusions from incomplete or conflicting evidence. Those activities resemble professional tasks more closely than memorizing isolated questions. Official sample tests also help candidates understand the examination software and workflow before test day.

Scores are reported on a scale of 0 to 99, with 75 required to pass a section. That is a scaled score, not a percentage-correct threshold. AICPA explains that scoring combines weighted, scaled contributions from different item types and goes through quality reviews. Candidates should therefore avoid interpreting an unofficial practice percentage as if it converts directly into an official passing score.

Preparation benefits from linking each blueprint topic to the kind of judgment being measured. For AUD, that might be evaluating an internal-control deficiency or selecting appropriate evidence. For FAR, it might mean constructing a statement effect from underlying transactions. For REG, it might involve applying a rule to an unfamiliar fact pattern. For ISC, it could mean interpreting a system-control weakness. Practicing the reasoning is more reliable than learning answers without their factual assumptions.

CPA, CGFM and specialist accounting credentials are not interchangeable

The AICPA's broader professional ecosystem also includes specialty designations and management-accounting education developed with partner bodies. Those options should be evaluated individually. They do not all represent a mandatory series after licensure, and some have distinct prerequisites, examination systems or membership obligations. A licence-holding CPA who pursues financial forensics, technology assurance or personal financial planning may find an additional credential useful, but employers should still examine practical experience in the area.

A government financial manager may alternatively consider AGA's CGFM qualifications, which concentrate on public budgets, governmental accounting and control. The CPA's reporting and audit foundation can complement that knowledge, but CGFM and CPA serve different regulatory and professional purposes. Choosing between them depends on the work rather than a general ranking of which acronym sounds more prestigious.

Most important, the CPA credential carries professional obligations after the exam. States set requirements for education, experience, ethics and ongoing license renewal; reciprocity and mobility rules are not identical everywhere. The AICPA provides important exam and professional resources, while the candidate's board remains the authority on licensure. A responsible CPA education plan begins by selecting the jurisdiction, verifying its current rules and then preparing for the exam using the effective blueprint.
