LSAT Preparation for the Current Exam

The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) in 2026 is built around Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension, with a separate unscored LSAT Argumentative Writing requirement. The old Analytical Reasoning “logic games” section is no longer part of the multiple-choice exam. That change took effect in August 2024, and the current scored structure remains two Logical Reasoning sections and one Reading Comprehension section.

There is also an important 2026 administration change: beginning with the August 2026 testing cycle, LSAC moved toward in-center testing for almost all candidates, with limited remote exceptions. The content did not change because of that platform shift. Preparation should therefore focus on the current reasoning skills while also making sure the candidate understands the new scheduling and testing environment.

The current multiple-choice LSAT has four 35-minute sections

The standard LSAT multiple-choice portion contains four sections of 35 minutes each. Three are scored: two Logical Reasoning sections and one Reading Comprehension section. The fourth is an unscored variable section used for test development. Test takers are not told which section is unscored while testing.

Because every scored question counts equally toward the raw score, there is no reason to protect one “hard” question at the expense of several manageable questions later. Efficient decision-making is central to LSAT performance.

Current LSAT practice should reproduce this section structure rather than the pre-2024 exam. A practice test that still includes a scored Analytical Reasoning section can be useful for logic training, but it is no longer an accurate simulation of the current LSAT.

Logical Reasoning now carries most of the scored multiple-choice weight

With two scored Logical Reasoning sections, argument analysis is the dominant component of the current exam. Candidates must identify conclusions and premises, recognize assumptions, evaluate evidence, strengthen or weaken reasoning, resolve apparent discrepancies, and understand how principles apply.

The most important early skill is argument structure. Before thinking about answer choices, identify what the author is trying to prove and what support is offered. Many difficult questions become manageable when the candidate stops treating every sentence as equally important.

Wrong-answer analysis should be specific. Did the choice reverse the logic, introduce an irrelevant issue, strengthen the wrong part of the argument, or make a claim that is too strong? Learning recurring distractor patterns is more valuable than memorizing question labels without understanding the reasoning.

Reading Comprehension tests structure, viewpoint, and inference

LSAT passages are dense because they are designed to test careful reading under time pressure. Candidates need to track main point, paragraph function, author attitude, competing viewpoints, evidence, and the relationship among ideas. Memorizing details line by line is not the goal.

A useful passage map is short: note the role of each paragraph and any major shift in viewpoint. The map should help the candidate return to evidence quickly. Excessive annotation can slow reading without improving comprehension.

Comparative Reading requires an additional layer: understand each passage independently, then identify agreement, disagreement, difference in method, or difference in scope. The strongest answers are grounded in what both texts actually say.

LSAT preparation should move from accuracy to pacing

Early timed pressure can hide the reason a candidate is missing questions. If someone does not understand necessary-assumption reasoning, doing it faster will not help. Begin with careful untimed or lightly timed work until the method is reliable, then compress the time.

A strong review process often takes longer than the question itself. Candidates should explain the credited answer, identify the exact flaw in each tempting wrong answer, and note what in the stimulus or passage should have triggered the correct reasoning.

The foundation of LSAT preparation is therefore diagnostic. Improvement comes from identifying repeated reasoning failures and fixing them, not from accumulating a huge number of completed questions.

Full practice tests should reproduce the current cognitive load

Section drills are essential, but the LSAT is also a test of sustained concentration. Candidates need to experience four timed sections with the scheduled intermission so they can learn how accuracy changes when fatigue appears.

The best use of a full test is not simply to record the score. Review where time was lost, which question types produced uncertainty, whether reading speed changed late in the exam, and whether difficult items caused emotional spillover into the next questions.

Regular full-length LSAT practice tests become more predictive after the underlying methods are stable. Before that point, they are mainly diagnostic.

Scoring rewards total correct answers, not question difficulty

LSAC converts a raw score—the number of questions answered correctly—into the familiar 120-to-180 LSAT scale. There is no deduction for incorrect answers. A hard question is therefore worth the same raw point as an easier one.

This creates a practical pacing rule: protect the questions you can solve reliably. If a difficult item is consuming disproportionate time, eliminate what you can, choose the best remaining answer, and move on. The opportunity cost of one question can be several later points.

Score targets should be tied to law-school goals rather than to a generic definition of “good.” Candidates should review the admissions profile of the schools they are considering and build a target range that makes sense for those applications.

Argumentative Writing is unscored but still required

LSAT Argumentative Writing is administered separately online. Most standard test takers receive 50 minutes: 15 minutes for prewriting analysis and 35 minutes for the essay. The writing sample is not scored, but a completed and approved writing sample is required before a first-time test taker’s LSAT score can be released.

Preparation should focus on making a clear choice, engaging with competing considerations, organizing the response, and supporting claims with reasons. The task is designed to show how the candidate constructs an argument, not to test specialized legal knowledge.

Because it is separate from the multiple-choice test, candidates should schedule it deliberately rather than leaving it until after score-release anxiety begins.

The 2026 return to in-center testing changes logistics, not content

Starting with August 2026, LSAC moved toward requiring in-person testing for most candidates. Limited remote exceptions remain for certain accommodation and distance circumstances. Candidates should read the rules for their administration rather than assuming the remote/in-person options from an earlier cycle still apply.

This matters for preparation because environment affects routine. A candidate who practiced exclusively at home should also rehearse the practical demands of traveling to a test center, checking in, working with the current digital interface, and managing the scheduled break.

LSAC has also introduced an updated testing interface for the 2026–2027 cycle. The content is unchanged, but familiarity with the interface reduces avoidable friction on test day.

For the 2026–2027 cycle, LSAC says the multiple-choice test is moving toward in-center administration for almost all test takers. Limited remote exceptions can apply in circumstances such as certain disability-related accommodations, active-duty military situations abroad, or excessive distance from an available domestic test center. Candidates should confirm the rule that applies to their registration rather than relying on the broader remote options available in earlier cycles.

The August 2026 administration also introduced a new LawHub test-delivery interface. LSAC released updated official PrepTests in that interface before the cycle began and has repeatedly stated that the content and structure did not change. That distinction matters: interface practice is worthwhile because navigation, highlighting, flagging, and font controls affect comfort, but it should not displace Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension study.

A realistic final-week rehearsal should therefore include both dimensions: a current four-section PrepTest under timing and a short logistics check covering the test center, identification, scheduling, break routine, and the interface. Removing avoidable operational surprises preserves attention for the reasoning work that actually determines the score.

High scorers improve by studying uncertainty, not only mistakes

Once basic accuracy is strong, reviewing only wrong answers is not enough. A question answered correctly after four minutes of confusion can reveal a weakness just as clearly as a miss. Mark questions that felt uncertain, slow, or dependent on guessing between two choices.

During review, articulate the decisive reason. What exact phrase made one answer correct? What flaw eliminated the competitor? This makes future recognition faster and more reliable.

Broader LSAT strategy should therefore track three dimensions: accuracy, time, and confidence. A stable high score requires all three to improve together.

Current LSAT preparation should be built around two Logical Reasoning sections, one Reading Comprehension section, one unscored variable section, and the separate Argumentative Writing requirement. Any plan centered on logic games as a scored section is outdated.

Use a diagnostic to identify weaknesses, repair reasoning before pushing speed, complete realistic four-section practice, and review uncertainty with the same seriousness as wrong answers. The purpose and structure of the LSAT should remain clear throughout preparation: it is a reasoning assessment used in law-school admission, not a test of memorized legal doctrine.

Finally, connect the score goal to actual schools and deadlines. A disciplined plan balances exam performance with the rest of the application timeline so the candidate is not forced to choose between one more practice test and completing the application itself.

At the highest score ranges, review should also distinguish a reasoning problem from a time-allocation problem. If the credited answer becomes obvious during blind review, the missing ingredient may be recognition speed rather than conceptual understanding. If the candidate still cannot justify the answer without explanation, the underlying method needs repair. Treating those two cases differently prevents advanced preparation from becoming endless repetition of questions that the candidate already knows how to solve slowly. That distinction should guide drill selection: repeat a question when the reasoning process was weak, not merely because the clock exposed it.
