Microsoft’s MCSA Updates For Windows 8.1: 70-687 and 70-688

microsoft, mcsa, it certifications, exam updatesThe moment Microsoft released Windows 8.1, we knew we could expect updates to the brand’s training materials and certifications. And the changes started coming in quietly and often unnoticed. Microsoft Learning updated both certification exams in the Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) track for Windows 8. The updated MCSA exams were released in January 2014 – just a few months after the launch of Windows 8.1.

With the recent talks about Microsoft and its next steps, we decided to give these exams the attention they deserve. So, let’s explore the updates to the following exams:

  • 70-687: Configuring Windows 8
  • 70-688: Supporting Windows 8.1

Updates to Exam 70-687

The 70-687 exam is all about installing and configuring Windows 8, as well as configuring hardware, networking and applications. Recent revisions include material specific to Windows 8.1: upgrading Windows 7 and installing Windows 8, and migrating from earlier versions of Windows (XP, Vista) to Windows 8.1.

New exam content also covers Hyper-V, Miracast display, Pervasive Device Encryption, and Secure Boot. The 70-687 also covers installing and updating applications from the Windows Store.

As Windows 8.1 has tighter integration with OneDrive (Microsoft’s cloud storage solution), the 70-687 exam now includes questions on how to configure the OneDrive service, retrieve files, and make them available offline.

The exam also covers Microsoft’s new browser, Internet Explorer 11. Related topics can include configuring either/both the desktop and Modern versions of IE.

Updates to Exam 70-688

It’s good to remember that the 70-688 has been renamed “Supporting Windows 8.1”, from its original name “Managing and Maintaining Windows 8” – a minor change that many candidates have found confusing while searching through the Microsoft Learning website.

The 70-688 exam looks deeper into the plumbing of Windows 8.1 clients and how they work in enterprise networks. As a result, the majority of the changes made to this exam are revisions to the existing knowledge domains, rather than entirely new Windows 8.1 content:

  • Installation and Application Strategy
  • Resource Access
  • Maintaining Windows Clients and Devices
  • Managing Windows 8.1 using Cloud Services and MS Desktop Optimization Pack

Some of the updated content on the 70-688 exam is related to Windows Intune, the cloud management product which can be used to manage PCs and mobile devices, including non-Microsoft devices like iPhones, iPads, and Android devices. Windows Intune can be used to deploy desktop and Windows store apps, as well as to “sideload” line-of-business applications onto Windows 8.1 devices.

What’s CIW, And Should I Earn A CIW Credential?

ciw, certified internet web professional, web foundations, web design, web development, web security, web development certifications, it certification examsCIW (The Certified Internet Web Professional) education program may seem to be outshined by more prominent IT certification brands out there, but it is still valued by IT professionals and employers. To add to its reputation, it’s worth mentioning that CIW is often chosen by colleges and universities worldwide – for the quality of their curriculum and exams. Let’s take a closer look to explore how earning a CIW credential can benefit your career.

What is CIW?

The Certified Internet Web Professional (CIW) education program was created by a community of Web designers and developers in the late 1990s and currently offers Web technology education and certification programs for professionals. CIW’s current owner, Certification Partners, offers books, on-line learning and high-stakes exams.

CIW’s unique selling point is the fact that their certification programs are vendor-neutral. Like CompTIA, instead of teaching specific applications, CIW’s program teaches more foundational skills and fosters understanding of underlying processes.

According to CIW, all their certifications are created from objectives suggested by experts who participate in the organization’s advisory council, ensuring that the training match with necessary job skills. CIW has become widely adopted by academic institutions and government organizations – both as a certification provider and as a curriculum publisher.

While CIW covers a wide range of areas, its main focus is on the foundational standards of the Web, including Web design, Web development and Web security. These credentials make their holders’ resumes stand out from the crowd of other Web professionals.

CIW certifications come in four series:

  • CIW Web Foundations Series
  • CIW Web Design Series
  • CIW Web Development Series
  • CIW Web Security Series

Web Foundations Series consists of three foundational courses and corresponding certification exams that teach and validate crucial web skills, preparing candidates to take the CIW Web Foundations exam, which, if passed, earns the individual the CIW Web Foundations Associate certification.

Web Design Series are currently being updated, with  the Web Design Specialist and the E-Commerce Specialist courses being expanded into 7 brand new courses, resulting in a complete redesign of the entire CIW Web Design series. For the revised CIW Web Design series, there are seven certifications, with accompanying courses:

  • CIW Advanced HTML5 and CSS3 Specialist (scheduled for release April 2014)
  • CIW User Interface Design Specialist (scheduled for release Q3 2014)
  • CIW Multimedia Specialist (scheduled for release Q3 2014)
  • CIW Social Media Strategy Specialist (to be released)
  • CIW Mobile Applications (to be released)
  • CIW E-Commerce Specialist (to be released)
  • CIW Data Analyst (to be released)

Web Development Series

Whether you want to specialize in JavaScript, Perl or databases, the CIW Web Development series has training and certifications that are right for you. The CIW Web Development series consists of three specialist courses and corresponding certification exams:

  • CIW JavaScrip Specialist
  • CIW Database design specialist
  • CIW Perl Specialist

Candidates who pass all three certification exams, achieve the credential of CIW Web Development Professional. With these three disciplines mastered, candidates are able to demonstrate their ability to develop Web programs and applications, and to work with relational databases.

Web Security Series

The CIW Web Security series consists of one CIW course and corresponding CIW certification exam, plus advanced CIW credentials that you can obtain by earning additional certifications from third-party security training providers. Whichever level of expertise you aim for, you can demonstrate to employers that you have the technical skills and knowledge to manage and protect the security of online data, from a single computer to an entire corporate network.

Summing up, if you are a web professional looking to step up your expertise and give your career a boost, CIW certification program may be right for you. And if you came across CIW while being at college, you’re lucky to have found it so early – there is no better time to learn than now!

VCDX: World’s Top IT Credential

vcdx, vmware certified design expert, it certification examsWhat is the most elite IT certification in the world today? With just a little over 120 holders and incredibly complex certification process, the VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX) credential certainly takes the lead.

VCDX is VMware’s highest certification level. There are currently three solution tracks for VCDX: Data center virtualization, cloud and end-user computing. The holders of these credentials join the IT elite, secure prestigious consulting opportunities and international speaking engagements.

So how hard is reaching the VCDX?

Besides complicated written exams (and, obviously, the whole bunch of prerequisite credentials), VCDX certification process required candidates to prepare a solution design, that can take hundreds of pages, and the solution needs to be presented and defended in front of the panel of VCDX holders. This may sound a bit like a masters programme if not Ph.D defence, but with the VCDX salaries starting at $99,000 in the United States, and being a member of a very tighly knit elite community of IT and virtualization experts, this process cannot be easy. Let’s take a closer look at the VCDX process, ‘cause who knows, you may come to face it some day ;).

VCDX emphasizes vSphere and datacenter virtualization skills and focuses on the software-defined-data center and delivering Infrastructure-as-a-Service with comprehensive management and security. The approach absolutely makes sense as no infrastructure professional can do much of anything these days without having to manage virtualized assets. With the growth of cloud computing and software-defined data center technologies, virtualization’s footprint continues to expand, and many organizations are using VMware’s technology.

As mentioned above, VCDX5-DCV certification is achieved through the unique design defense process, where all candidates must submit and successfully defend a production-ready VMware Solution before a panel of veteran VCDX-DCV holders. This process ensures that those who achieve VCDX status are peer-vetted and ready to join an elite group of world-class consulting architects.

The candidate needs to pass exams in enterprise administration and design. After passing the exams, the candidate submits a design plan for a large virtualized infrastructure environment. If the plan is accepted, the candidate presents and defends the plan before a panel of VCDX holders. During the defense portion, the applicant explains why certain decisions were made, answers questions from panel members and attempts to troubleshoot a theoretical problem posed by the board.

VCDX certification candidates must hold the VMware Certified Professional (VCP), and advanced professional (VCAP) administration and design certifications.

 Upgrading from VCDX4-DCV

Those who already hold the VCDX4-DCV certification can upgrade to VCDX5-DCV certification without redoing the Design Defense process. Here’s what these candidates need to do:

  1. Be a current VCDX4-DCV holder in good standing
  2. Pass the VMware Certified Advanced Professional 5 – Data Center Design (VCAP5-DCD) exam

Becoming a VCDX5-DCV

  1. Hold VMware Certified Advanced Professional 5 – Data Center Administration (VCAP5-DCA) and VMware Certified Advanced Professional 5 – Data Center Design (VCAP5-DCD) Certification
  2. Submit a VCDX5-DCV Application that is accepted
  3. Successfully present and defend a VMware vSphere based virtual infrastructure design and implementation plan.

VMware illustrates the logic with this chart:

NEW CompTIA Security+ Exam SY0-401 is Available!

comptia, security, new it certification exams, updatesHappy Labor Day! Whether you celebrated it yesterday, or still have months to go until that first weekend of September, we sure hope that you’ve enjoyed the week – and Happy Friday peeps!

In case you have missed the big news released yesterday, we are happy to tell you that the new CompTIA Security+ exam is now officially available worldwide. Introduced yesterday, May 1, CompTIA’s new SY0-401 is now available worldwide in English, with more languages to be added within the next few months. According to the vendor, the new exam puts more emphasis on BYOD, mobile security and risk mitigation.

“This update reflects the changes and challenges IT professionals face in the realm of cybersecurity,” said Terry Erdle, executive vice president, skills certification and learning, CompTIA.

Well, so far it all sounds expected. Security challenges keep growing, and, especially with the ‘heartbleed’ disaster still being hot (with no end in sight), the update does not come as much of a surprise.

UPD: We have just come across the fresh new braindumps for the SY0-401 exam available from 2 main certification training providers: TestKing and Pass4Sure.  Wonder when FREE Security+ VCEs reach ExamCollection…

These are the updates as outlined by CompTIA.

  • Expansion of common protocols and services.
  • Stronger emphasis on risk, including risk due to systems integration with third parties and how to plan for it.
  • More on mobile security and BYOD.
  • Risk mitigation in static environments including SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) and Android/iOS.
  • Wider scenario based authentication, authorization and access control, including federation.

The new exam also includes more scenario-based objectives, which are often used for performance based questions in CompTIA exams. Don’t worry, however, if you get confused by the exam objectives currently available on the official CompTIA website. As of morning of May 2 here in Europe, they don’t seem to have been updated. We’ll be sure to keep you guys posted!

If you consider earning the Security+ credential, we can assure you that this is certainly a great one to have. This certification is widely recognized throughout the IT industry and around the world as a certification that designates knowledgeable professionals in the field of cybersecurity. More than 284,000 individuals have earned CompTIA Security+ certification.
