Microsoft Endpoint and Modern Work Skills

Microsoft’s modern-work administration roles span endpoint management, Microsoft 365 tenant administration, and Teams collaboration. The MD-102 exam validates Endpoint Administrator skills around Microsoft Intune and modern device management, while MS-700 covers Teams administration and MS-102 covers broader Microsoft 365 administration.

The path is currently changing. MS-102 is scheduled to retire on November 30, 2026, while MD-102 and MS-700 have October 27, 2026 English-language updates already published. Candidates should plan by role and exam date rather than assuming older Modern Work roadmaps remain current.

MD-102 is the endpoint-management anchor

MD-102 focuses on preparing infrastructure for devices, enrolling devices in Intune, managing and maintaining devices, configuring profiles, securing and deploying applications, and improving endpoint operations through automation and reporting.

The role is best for administrators responsible for Windows and other managed endpoints across cloud and hybrid environments.

The Endpoint Administrator Associate certification is a strong signal for modern device-management ownership.

It combines deployment, configuration, security, application management, compliance, and support.

The role also includes balancing corporate control with user productivity across different ownership and enrollment models. A personally owned device, corporate laptop, kiosk, and frontline device may require different policy and application strategies.

Endpoint administrators need to understand the intent behind configuration profiles and compliance rules so they can troubleshoot policy conflicts instead of simply adding more settings.

Endpoint administration also includes lifecycle. Devices are enrolled, configured, updated, monitored, reassigned, retired, or wiped, and each stage has security and data-handling implications.

A strong administrator designs policies that support the entire device lifecycle instead of focusing only on initial enrollment.

Intune is the operating platform behind the endpoint role

Modern endpoint administration is increasingly policy-driven rather than image-driven.

Administrators use enrollment, configuration profiles, compliance policies, application management, remote actions, reporting, and security integrations to control large device fleets.

The internal MD-102 endpoint material can provide additional context.

The core professional skill is translating organizational endpoint requirements into policies that remain manageable at scale.

Reporting and automation are increasingly important at scale. An administrator should be able to identify unhealthy enrollment, noncompliance, failed application deployment, and policy drift across thousands of devices without checking them individually.

Remote actions are powerful and should be governed carefully because wipe, retire, sync, restart, and security actions can have significant user impact.

MS-700 is the Teams collaboration branch

The MS-700 exam validates Teams administration, including environment configuration, teams/channels/apps, meetings and calling, monitoring, reporting, and troubleshooting.

Teams administrators collaborate with identity, networking, devices, security, compliance, and adoption teams.

This branch is relevant when collaboration and communication services are the main system you operate rather than endpoint devices themselves.

Microsoft has published an English-language update scheduled for October 27, 2026, so exam-date version control matters.

Teams administration also depends heavily on networking and devices because calling and meeting quality is sensitive to bandwidth, latency, packet loss, and endpoint configuration.

A Teams administrator may not own the WAN or endpoint fleet, but should collect enough evidence to distinguish a service policy problem from a network or device problem before escalating.

Teams apps and external collaboration also introduce governance decisions. Administrators need to balance productivity with app approval, guest access, federation, data handling, and user adoption.

These are service-management decisions as much as technical configuration, especially in large organizations.

MS-102 is the broader tenant-level administrator exam

The MS-102 exam covers Microsoft 365 tenant configuration and management plus security services in Defender XDR.

The role acts as an integrating hub across Microsoft 365 workloads, identity, security, compliance, endpoints, applications, and infrastructure.

The internal MS-102 career material can help illustrate that broad administrator responsibility.

As of October 4, 2026, Microsoft states that MS-102 will retire on November 30, 2026.

The broad tenant role is why MS-102 knowledge remains useful even with retirement approaching. Identity, Defender XDR, tenant configuration, and cross-workload administration continue to matter in Microsoft 365.

Candidates should preserve those durable skills while verifying the successor certification route separately.

MS-102 retirement makes path planning date-sensitive

Candidates already prepared for MS-102 still have a live exam window before retirement, but new candidates should review Microsoft’s current replacement and credential guidance before beginning a long study plan.

Do not treat an internal exam URL as proof that the exam will remain active after November.

Save the current study guide and verify the scheduling page before paying for an exam.

Retirement affects exam availability, not the value of durable Microsoft 365 administration skills learned from the objectives.

Retirement also affects retake planning. A candidate scheduling close to November 30 should leave enough time for another attempt if needed and confirm that appointments are available.

Professionals starting now should avoid assuming the current Administrator Expert requirements will remain unchanged after the retirement; Microsoft’s live credential page should be checked for the successor route.

Endpoint and Teams administrators share several dependencies

Identity, conditional access, device state, applications, networking, security, and compliance affect both managed endpoints and Teams user experience.

A Teams calling problem can originate in device configuration or network conditions; an endpoint policy can influence access to collaboration services.

Professionals who understand both roles communicate better across incidents even if one certification remains their primary depth.

The modern-work environment is a system of connected administrative domains.

Conditional Access is one example of that overlap. A user may have a healthy Teams service and a working device but still be denied because device compliance or identity policy does not meet the access requirement.

Effective troubleshooting requires understanding which team owns the policy and collecting evidence that proves the denial belongs to identity, endpoint state, Teams configuration, or network conditions.

Security is built into modern endpoint and work administration

Device compliance, app protection, Defender integration, Entra identity, access policy, tenant security, and collaboration controls are normal administrative responsibilities.

This makes modern-work administration more than user provisioning and software deployment.

The endpoint or collaboration administrator must understand how convenience, security, and supportability trade off in real environments.

That security awareness also makes transitions into identity or security certifications easier later.

Application protection and managed-device policy also force administrators to think about data boundaries. Corporate data may need controls even when users work from personal or mobile devices.

The administrator should understand which controls protect the device, the application, the identity, and the tenant so one broad policy is not used to solve every security concern.

Choose the certification from the service you own

Choose MD-102 when endpoint enrollment, configuration, application management, compliance, and Intune operations dominate your work.

Choose MS-700 when Teams collaboration, meetings, calling, apps, and service troubleshooting dominate.

Treat MS-102 as a time-sensitive current exam because of its announced retirement, and review Microsoft’s live administrator-expert path before scheduling.

Role ownership is a more reliable guide than collecting every Microsoft 365 exam.

Another useful test is the maintenance window you are expected to lead. Endpoint administrators own device rollout, app deployment, and compliance changes. Teams administrators own collaboration configuration, calling, and service changes. Tenant-level administrators own cross-workload policies and integrations.

Choose the exam that matches the changes and incidents for which your team already treats you as the primary owner.

Use Microsoft Learn for live status and update dates

The Microsoft exam inventory can help with internal navigation.

Microsoft Learn should control current status because MD-102 and MS-700 have upcoming October 27 updates and MS-102 has a fixed November 30 retirement date.

A final study plan should include the exam code, objective version, and scheduled date at the top.

That version discipline protects modern-work candidates during a period of active certification change.

The October 27 updates to MD-102 and MS-700 are future changes on the current research date, so candidates testing earlier should not automatically replace current objective wording with the upcoming version.

This is exactly why date-stamped study plans matter in Microsoft 365: multiple related exams can be changing or retiring during the same quarter.

Keep the upcoming October 27 MD-102 and MS-700 changes separate from the current objectives when preparing for an earlier exam date. Microsoft publishes future study guides ahead of the effective date, so candidates need to read the heading and change log carefully.

For MS-102, the retirement date is even more important than the objective version because exam availability ends entirely after the published cutoff.

Keep the retirement and update dates visible on the first page of your plan. In a quarter with several changes, date awareness is part of accurate certification preparation rather than an administrative detail.

After the November MS-102 retirement, revisit the Administrator Expert requirements before relying on any older certification diagram. Microsoft can change the combination of exams or prerequisites even while endpoint and Teams skills remain professionally relevant.

Treat the current Learn page as the credential authority and older roadmaps as historical context.

Keep separate notes for current and future MD-102/MS-700 objectives until October 27 so exam-date accuracy does not get lost during the transition.

Recheck the live credential requirements again after the MS-102 retirement.

Keep the transition dates visible.
