Start with the current GRE as the boundary
The GRE General Test has used a shorter format since September 22, 2023. ETS lists one thirty-minute Analyze an Issue writing task, two Verbal sections with 12 and 15 questions, and two Quantitative sections with 12 and 15 questions, for approximately one hour and 58 minutes total. The official GRE structure differs materially from older six-section study plans.
This matters for a review journal because the limits of a section change the cost of a slow method. Students should note whether a correct untimed method becomes too expensive under the real section clock. That is different from a content gap: the reasoning may be sound, but the working strategy might need simplification.
Diagnose the mental move that failed
For a Quantitative error, distinguish arithmetic miscalculation, wrong variable setup, misunderstanding a graph or picking an elegant but invalid shortcut. In Verbal Reasoning, identify a failure to track contrast, tone, logical scope or the relation between a sentence and the larger passage. In Analytical Writing, ask whether the response actually developed a reasoned position or merely repeated a formula.
The journal entry should be brief enough to use. Record question topic, original thinking, why it failed, a corrected rule and a similar item to attempt later. A full copied explanation is less valuable if the learner cannot say, without reading it, what changed. The point is to create an operational correction.
Separate learning from score tracking
ETS’s POWERPREP program offers official practice experiences, including free materials. Its timed and untimed modes serve different purposes, and an untimed preview should not be treated as a scored official simulation. Use a suitable diagnostic occasionally, but devote most of the next study block to the journal’s recurring errors.
A learner can make strong progress without a dramatic score jump every week. Improvement may first appear as fewer “unknown principle” mistakes or a shorter time required to solve a familiar type. Be wary of overinterpreting differences between a few unofficial sets with inconsistent question difficulty.
Practice retrieval and transfer
After correcting a question, close the explanation and solve a different item using the same principle. Return after a few days. If the idea works only when the original answer is visible, the correction has not yet transferred. For data interpretation, use a new chart; for sentence equivalence, practice a passage with different contrast markers; for algebra, change the structure of the word problem.
A second step is to write a short why-not note about one tempting wrong option. This strengthens discrimination rather than just recognition of the correct answer. It is particularly useful for close reading where several choices appear plausible until one contradicts the scope of the passage.
Connect the test to the real graduate application
The GRE is one component that some graduate, business or law programs consider; it is not a universal admissions requirement. Verify whether the intended program accepts or requires it and whether it uses a minimum threshold before setting a demanding score target. The ETS preparation collection helps organize legitimate study sources without requiring every candidate to purchase a premium package.
Reasoned self-correction is valuable beyond one examination. It teaches a student to notice a claim, test evidence, and repair an error without disguising it. That is the practical mental habit this article aims to cultivate; choosing and scheduling full-length simulations is a different, complementary task.
