Understand the updated test before taking a baseline
The ETS post-January-2026 structure uses Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, with more varied task types and adaptive components. Reading includes Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage. Writing includes Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion. Speaking includes Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview. The base test time is approximately two hours including administration considerations; adaptive item counts and actual testing time can vary.
Official score reporting now uses a 1–6 scale in half-point increments for each section and overall. ETS also provides a comparable overall score on the older 0–120 scale during a transitional reporting period, but a practice estimate from an obsolete form must not be treated as a direct official conversion. The current ETS scoring explanation is the appropriate source for interpreting score reports.
Make the first mock a skill survey
Before practice, write down which skills need evidence. Is the goal to understand fast conversational listening, to construct coherent emails, to recognize the main idea of an academic passage or to speak intelligibly after hearing a prompt? A realistic practice set can expose several of these weaknesses, but the result should be classified by task rather than simply labeled “good English” or “bad English.”
After a listening miss, determine whether the difficulty was retaining a key detail, following speaker purpose or mishearing a contrast. After a writing task, evaluate whether the response addressed the required communicative purpose and whether sentences were clear. For speaking, review whether the answer was responsive and intelligible, not just whether it used advanced vocabulary.
Do not assign an unofficial score too much authority
Adaptive assessments and standardized scoring cannot be reproduced by a homemade spreadsheet of right answers. An unofficial mock may provide useful feedback about timing and language behavior, but it should not be promoted as an accurate ETS score or admission guarantee. Compare results across similar tasks and use authorized official materials when available.
The ETS 1–6 score guidance also explains that institutions should review score requirements under the new scale. Students should confirm their target university’s accepted TOEFL version, minimum section requirements, score-validity policy and admission deadlines directly; the blog cannot set these conditions on their behalf.
Convert a broad diagnosis into precise practice
Choose one listening task and one productive task to improve over the next week. For listening, practice taking concise notes about function and relations rather than transcribing every word. For writing, plan an appropriate purpose, develop supporting details, then edit for clarity. For speaking, record short answers to similar authorized prompts and identify one issue of comprehension, pronunciation or organization to fix.
Do not take another full mock the following day simply to erase an uncomfortable result. Give the relevant skills enough practice to change. A second mock makes sense when the question becomes whether improvements transfer to a mixed, time-constrained assessment.
Rehearse the mode and policies for your appointment
ETS offers authorized test-center and Home Edition arrangements subject to current rules. Check the identity, equipment, room and security requirements for the booking you actually hold. An internet practice quiz cannot grant eligibility for home testing or accommodations.
The best first TOEFL mock test provides a map of what to study and what to confirm, not a prediction carved in stone. Using the 2026 format prevents candidates from investing heavily in obsolete tasks while still respecting the language skills carried over from older materials.
