Amazon AWS SAP-C02: The SAP-C03 Transition

Amazon AWS SAP-C02: The SAP-C03 Transition

The original URL of this article reflects an earlier SAP-C02 exam-update discussion. Its current purpose is more useful: explain the October–November 2026 transition from AWS SAP-C02 exam to SAP-C03 without making older exam notes sound current. AWS continues to offer SAP-C02 in October 2026, but it has announced the updated Professional assessment and a short transition window. A candidate choosing a study plan now needs to distinguish confirmed SAP-C02 objectives, announced SAP-C03 subject areas, and information that is not yet available.

The certification is still AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional. The examination version changes, not the broad identity of the credential or the value of proven architecture experience. The practical decision is whether a candidate can realistically finish preparation for the current four-domain assessment or would be better served by studying toward the next blueprint once it is published.

Know which dates AWS has announced

AWS’s September 2026 training announcement states that registration for SAP-C03 opens October 27, that November 16 is the final day for SAP-C02 delivery, and that SAP-C03 begins November 17. The current English certification page and the September AWS training announcement both identify November 16 as the last SAP-C02 testing day. Candidates should still confirm individual appointment availability in the official scheduling portal. Until the changeover, SAP-C02 remains the current assessment.

A candidate already deep into professional-level preparation may have a rational reason to keep a SAP-C02 booking. Someone beginning architecture study from scratch has substantially less time and should compare the opportunity cost of rushing with waiting for the successor. Existing earned credentials remain valid according to their normal validity period; the arrival of SAP-C03 is not evidence that a passing SAP-C02 credential immediately becomes invalid.

Keep SAP-C02's four weighted domains straight

The published SAP-C02 guide divides scored content into designing solutions for organizational complexity (26%), designing new solutions (29%), continuously improving existing solutions (25%), and accelerating workload migration and modernization (20%). These are broad categories of architectural decisions, not four isolated lists of services. Multi-account governance, network connectivity, resiliency, security, delivery strategy, performance, cost, modernization, and operational improvement recur across the domains because enterprise workloads do not respect neat exam boundaries.

AWS lists 75 questions and 180 minutes for the current Professional exam. The SAP-C02 guide specifies 65 scored questions and 10 unscored questions, a scaled passing score of 750, and multiple-choice plus multiple-response formats. Memorizing the percentages without understanding their tasks is a poor preparation method. A migration scenario can also require security controls, operational readiness, and cost tradeoffs; the domain weight is an allocation guide, not permission to ignore adjacent skills.

Understand the five announced SAP-C03 themes

AWS has outlined five themes for SAP-C03: cloud-native architecture design and implementation; security, compliance, and governance; cost-optimized architecture; resilience, migration, and business continuity; and operational excellence and automation. AWS also describes newer emphasis on generative and agentic AI workloads, integration of AI/ML into architecture, and contemporary resilience and security practices. Those announcements are useful for planning, but they are not the same as the finalized task-by-task examination blueprint.

As of October 13, the full detailed SAP-C03 exam guide is scheduled for release when registration opens on October 27. Avoid inventing task weights or promising that a particular AI service will appear as scored content. The current SAP-C02 guide does mention emerging security and responsible-AI controls as possible unscored pretest material. That is not proof that generative AI has become a fifth scored SAP-C02 domain. Keep the actual scored blueprint separate from exploratory questions and forthcoming successor content.

See what architectural knowledge carries forward

An architect who understands AWS Organizations, IAM, multi-account landing zones, network segmentation, resilient databases, workload migration, and cost governance is not starting over with SAP-C03. These responsibilities remain central to designing optimized cloud systems. What changes is the way current practices are grouped and the additional modern scenarios an architect is expected to evaluate. IAM and multi-account design is a particularly durable foundation because security and governance decisions shape both traditional workloads and new AI-enabled applications.

Professional architecture skills explains the current SAP-C02 scope, while AWS resilience patterns addresses a capability expected to remain important across versions. Candidates should strengthen these reusable concepts with architecture reviews and labs instead of constantly switching between exam-preparation checklists. Understanding why a design succeeds under a specific failure or policy constraint creates a much more portable skill than recognizing a product name in an answer option.

Distinguish the Associate exam from both Professional versions

The SAA-C03 exam is AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate, a different credential with its own four domains: secure architectures, resilient architectures, high-performing architectures, and cost-optimized architectures. It is not a replacement for SAP-C02 and does not turn into SAP-C03. AWS does not require the Associate certification as a formal prerequisite to the Professional assessment. Nevertheless, Professional candidates are expected to make common compute, storage, database, network, and IAM choices fluently before approaching complex multi-account or migration constraints.

That boundary matters for the site’s article architecture. Associate-level posts should own service-selection fundamentals and their own scenarios. Professional pages should own organization-wide constraints, operational decision-making, hybrid architectures, and modernization sequencing. Cross-links are useful when they explain an actual learning progression, not when they blur the two examinations or imply one code can be substituted for another.

The migration from one exam code to another is also a source-governance problem for editorial teams. A title that prominently advertises SAP-C02 is useful to candidates searching for the current version, but its introduction must not describe an already announced successor as an unconfirmed rumor. Conversely, placing SAP-C03 in every heading before AWS publishes the final detailed guide can make the page sound more certain than the evidence permits. Version labels, issuer announcement dates, and the practical consequence for a reader should appear together, while enduring architecture concepts should not be rewritten into speculative exam predictions.

Consider two candidates. One has two years of AWS production architecture experience, a stable passing practice baseline, and an appointment in early November. That candidate may reasonably finish SAP-C02 preparation using the verified current blueprint. Another is learning IAM and VPC networking for the first time and has no realistic examination date before the update. That reader would benefit more from learning the professional architectural foundations and moving to the SAP-C03 guide once available. Neither choice is inherently superior; the evidence is their actual readiness against the appropriate set of objectives.

Do not copy SAP-C02’s four percentages into a guessed SAP-C03 scoring chart. The five announced successor themes describe its planned direction, not published scored-domain weights. Security for agentic applications, post-quantum cryptographic practices, and emerging automation concerns can inform professional development, but the final examination tasks and service scope must come from AWS’s updated guide. This protects candidates from spending limited time on content that a third-party prediction describes as certain without issuer support.

There is also a documentation hygiene problem during any exam retirement window. Candidate communities may circulate a PDF labeled “latest” that predates the September announcement, a blog may still advertise an older sitting deadline, and practice sets may mix the outgoing and incoming versions without noting the difference. These are different levels of evidence. An official AWS exam guide establishes the examined objectives of the current version; AWS’s dated announcement establishes the published transition plan; the booking portal establishes actual available appointments. An independently written tutorial can deepen technical understanding, but it should not override either issuer document on exam eligibility or scheduling.

Suppose an employer has approved certification time off for a group of architects. Some have already completed advanced migration and multi-account labs, while others are still learning AWS network fundamentals. The sensible program is not one rigid deadline. Ready candidates can consider the remaining SAP-C02 dates; the rest should continue with architectures that remain relevant and switch their exact practice blueprint once SAP-C03 documentation is available. That approach protects training spend and avoids making rushed attempts the measure of professional readiness. Managers should also keep a record of the exam code and publication date attached to any internal training material, so that future cohorts do not inherit stale instructions.

Choose a preparation route according to readiness

For an imminent SAP-C02 attempt, first compare recent practice work against all four official domains. Can you trace packet and DNS paths through a hybrid network? Can you explain why a particular disaster-recovery strategy meets both RTO and RPO? Can you defend an account structure and organizational guardrails? Can you select a migration wave and articulate rollback conditions? Where these answers are weak, targeted scenario reviews usually offer more value than starting another general video course.

For a later SAP-C03 attempt, maintain those architectural foundations and postpone version-specific memorization until AWS releases the complete replacement guide. Use the interim period for hands-on work in governance, modern application architecture, observability, automation, and policy-driven security. Neither route benefits from assuming unverified exam dates, fabricated passing-score changes, or a fictional service-weighting chart. The official booking flow and published exam guide should determine final exam preparation decisions.

Keep historical materials honest

Old SAP-C02 articles still have value when they explain how AWS architecture decisions were tested, but publication dates and screenshots can age. A page written for 2023 should not tell readers that the next exam change is still hypothetical, or that a credential requires a course sequence which AWS does not impose. Historical material can identify past syllabus shifts; current exam planning must use the 2026 AWS guide and issuer announcements. When comparing a legacy article with a current study source, treat dated domain names or retired products as historical context rather than live instructions.

This is also why an existing permalink can be retained while its page is rewritten. The older URL and incoming references continue to serve readers, while the visible heading and body explain the current factual position. A change in the examination version does not justify publishing a second nearly identical URL. It calls for accurate dates, a clear separation of current and announced content, and an explanation of how candidate choices differ.

Preserve a useful decision after the transition

After SAP-C03 replaces SAP-C02, this page should remain an accurate transition record: what SAP-C02 assessed, why AWS refreshed the Professional exam, which skills transfer, and where readers must look for current scheduling and blueprint details. The commercial SAP-C02 exam destination remains relevant while its version is offered, but should be revisited as actual availability changes; any successor destination requires separate validation before being linked or claimed active.

For now, the strongest candidate decision is grounded in readiness rather than urgency. Already prepared candidates can evaluate a remaining SAP-C02 appointment, while those starting fresh can use the short wait to develop deeper architecture judgment for SAP-C03. In either case, exam success should follow the ability to reason about secure, resilient, cost-conscious and operable systems, not confidence borrowed from a potentially outdated summary.
