Microsoft Knows How to Protect Your Internet of Things. Welcome Azure Sphere!

6Azure Sphere is an all-round system designed to protect the most assailable devices connected to the Internet.

For years, security professionals have argued that your smart devices are potential targets for hackers. Smart refrigerators, thermometers, and light bulbs are designed for convenience and ease of use, but when they are created, not enough attention is paid to security issues. As a result, hackers can get an around-the-clock access to your personal data or control your devices to make them part of a zombie network for attacks on the Internet.

Until now, there was no solutions to all the security problems of the Internet of Things. That is why Microsoft is betting on a new product group, announced as Azure Sphere. It is a wee chip that is a microcontroller that can be embedded in smart devices. It is also an operating system (OS) that allows you to safely manage the device. And finally, this is a security software that runs in Cloud and protects devices from being hacked.

The announced product is the first attempt to create a comprehensive IoT security system. While our laptops, computers, and telephones have long been equipped with security features built into their hardware and operating systems, not to mention the accessibility of a sufficient number of available software products to prevent hacker attacks. This may not seem too important for your security webcam. The president of Microsoft Brad Smith said that this is the essence of the problem. If cameras can be used to launch attacks on the Internet, as was the case with the Mirai attack in 2016, then one cannot help but ensure their safety.

The announced product allows Microsoft to take a unique position on the IoT market. Despite the fact that the company is already competing in this realm, offering a personal assistant Cortana for smart speakers, Azure Sphere gives Microsoft the opportunity to use their technology in billions of devices sold by other organizations. Instead of producing chips on its own, Microsoft is working with the chip maker MediaTek. Microsoft will certify that these chips are made according to their standards. The managing director of the company Galen Hunt said that these chips will be available “in significant numbers” this summer. He also declared that this is a key part of Azure Sphere, because the chip “functions as the brain of the device, including the computing part, storage, machine memory, and operating system.”

Microsoft has not yet announced a partnership with device manufacturers for the Internet of Things, which means that we still do not know which IoT devices will use a new technology. Two companies said they consider the technology presented by Microsoft to be promising. This is a SubZero refrigerator manufacturer and a home appliance manufacturer Glen Dimplex.

Windows 10 Ceases to Exist…Why?

Windows 10Nowadays, Windows 10 is one of the most popular operating systems on the planet, but it did not succeed in surpassing Windows 7 if we discuss the prevalence on PCs. Of course, Microsoft is disappointed with such a result, but the company understands that nothing can be done about it, thus the management decided to move on in order not to repeat mistakes in the future. Wi-Fi 6: What You Need to Know about This New Standard

2Wi-Fi is getting faster and better, many routers are already accessible with chips using draft 802.11ax Wi-Fi specifications, but the new standard should be adopted by December 2019, which will lead to a wave of updated devices with new wireless capabilities. They will help create the next generation of networks with less delays and greater speed.

The 802.11ax standard, or “high-efficiency wireless”, will now be called Wi-Fi 6. This is a new standard provided by the Wi-Fi Alliance, and the previous generations are now known as Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) and Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac). As already mentioned, Wi-Fi 6 is expected to have a more direct effect in areas where networks are heavily overloaded, and ultimately help lay the foundation for the expected future of intelligent infrastructure (for example, the Internet of things). Along with solving problems with a huge number of devices and network deployment arising as IoT is deployed, Wi-Fi 6 will be adapted to meet the ever-growing demand for higher data rates for several users. Wi-Fi 6 is based on 802.11ac with about or even more 50 updated features, although not all of them will be included in the final specification. Here are some of the expected achievements of Wi-Fi 6:

  • Higher bandwidth per user for virtual reality andultra-HD streaming
  • Support more concurrent data streams with increased bandwidth
  • Spread spectrum (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, eventually 1 GHz and 6 GHz frequencies are expected)

Wi-Fi 6 also introduces support (OFDMA) for incoming and outgoing communication lines, a modulation scheme that equates to a multi-user version of OFDM. It will reduce latency, increase throughput and efficiency, allowing 30 users to simultaneously use the channel.


Designed to replace both 802.11n and 802.11ac as the next WLAN standard, 802.11ax or Wi-Fi 6 is being developed to provide significant improvements in network efficiency and throughput for dense locations with moderate improvements in peak data rates that will be better supported on multiple devices simultaneously.

With the growth of the number of devices, the question arises about the convenience of infrastructure management. If they are not related to each other, then the administrator may need to perform some configuration operations individually on each device, which requires more time and can potentially lead to errors. In addition, the requirements for staff qualifications are also increasing. At the same time, the use of “large” network management systems does not fit into the organization’s budget or limits the choice of equipment.

However, in the modern world, many services are implemented in this way, including e-mail, instant messengers, data exchange systems, and so on, which can significantly reduce their costs and at the same time provide the necessary reliability and performance. So in this case we can talk about administrative restrictions rather than technical ones. In addition, it is no secret that SMB enterprises are completely in a situation where the system administrator is not a full-time employee of the company or these functions are outsourced to a third-party company. Therefore, Cloud implementation can be considered just one of the characteristics of the solution in question and take into account the pros and cons of this approach. As for the question of the dependence of the system on availability of the Internet access in the office, here it can be argued that modern business without the Internet is practically inoperable and providing reliable access to the network does not depend on the network infrastructure management system.


Among the equipment supported by the system today are security gateways, switches, and access points. Herewith, the device is hybrid and can be controlled either through Cloud or locally. Two Main Questions about Microsoft Client Access License (CAL): What Is It? and Why Does It Need?

What is a client license?

A client license (or CAL – Client Access License) gives the users the legal right to access the Microsoft server software for Windows itself, SQL server, Exchange server. By itself, the license does not give the individuals and devices the right to connect to the server. For this purpose, each user or device must have a client license.

Server manufacturers who distribute a software with servers can supply the client access licenses. At the same time, the CALs purchased with the server provide the same rights as similar ones purchased separately from equipment. But many people do not know that Microsoft no longer delivers the client access licenses with Windows Server licensed through the OEM channel.

Types of client licenses

The client licenses are of two types, and depending on the work organization in the company (whether the employees use several devices or, on the contrary, different people work alternately for some devices), you can significantly optimize costs by choosing the appropriate type.

User CALs

image1Depending on the number of users, you buy the CAL for each employee. It does not matter how many devices are used by the workers for whom you bought the licenses. They are also beneficial in cases where the organization has more devices than users.

Device CALs

The device CALs can reduce costs and simplify administration in companies where several employees can use one device, for example, when working in several shifts.

In a large organization can be multiple servers. It is useful to know that having the CAL for a user (or a device) allows him/her to legally work with any of them.

Do you need CALs if users/devices do not connect directly to the Microsoft server software?

A company may use a specific server product for personnel management, accounting, etc., with its own licensing system. Apple & a Subscription to Games and Magazines


The Apple News application will include a News+ subscription, which allows the user to access the articles in more than 300 different magazines with a monthly fee of $10. Along with this, the articles will be available in online publications with a paid subscription (i.e. The Wall Street Journal). This is a peculiar restructuring of the old application – Newsstand, in which the individual could buy new issues and had to manually subscribe to magazines of interest. The subscription cost is $10 per month; the first month of use is free. Apple claims that the total cost of subscriptions for all media available in News+ is about $8,000. In addition, the company was announced the Apple News application in the UK, Australia, and Canada at the end of 2019.

The Apple Arcade subscription gives the user access to more than 100 exclusive games. The company didn’t disclose any details, even the cost of the subscription, it only demonstrated parts from various projects. Konami and Sega are among the game developers for this new service. But it will be possible to play on the iPad, iPhone, and Apple TV, and in the autumn of 2019, a subscription will be launched in more than 150 countries.

Apple & a Credit Card

The company has presented the credit card – Apple Card, which can be issued by any owner of the iPhone. There is no a service charge. At once, the users of Apple Card will receive a daily cashback of 3% of the purchase amount at Apple stores, 2% for purchases via Apple Pay, and 1% – via a physical card. Nonetheless, it works only in the USA, the company did not say anything about the appearance the card in other countries.

Most of the presentation was devoted to the new streaming service Apple TV+ with exclusive movies and TV shows. The projects of Steven Spielberg (who previously spoke out against Netflix), Jay Jay Abrams, Damien Chazelle, and other directors were announced. Famous actors, including Steve Carrell, Reese Witherspoon, and Jason Momoa, spoke about the shows available on TV+ where they will be filmed.

Along with this, Apple has completely updated the Apple TV app. It will be available on macOS and on TVs by Samsung, Sony, LG, and Vizio. With this application, you can watch the shows of HBO, Showtime, Starz, and CBS channels, as well as streaming services like Amazon Prime and Hulu. A new Apple TV app will launch with a subscription to channels and streaming services in May 2019, and TV+ will be available in the autumn of 2019 in more than 100 countries.

It is an interesting fact that Apple has already tried to present their own shows. In 2016, Apple bought the rights from CBS to the Carpool Karaoke rubric in the American show – The Late Late Show with James Corden. The first episode of Carpool Karaoke: The Series was released in August 2017, 21 episodes were produced during the first season. The second season of the show began in October 2018, and at the moment there are 18 episodes.

Also, in June 2017, Apple launched the Planet of the Apps show, in which the developers had a minute to tell the jury about their application and convince them of the importance of their product. If at least one of the judges agrees to listen to the idea, the developer was given more time for the presentation. In total there were 10 episodes, after which the show was closed.
