When the task is complete, the target can be unlinked, and the snapshot can be terminated. SnapVX allows for setting expiration dates on snapshots, so the system can automatically delete them after a defined period, preventing the uncontrolled consumption of pool space. Understanding these management tasks was vital for the E20-335 Exam.
While local replication is excellent for operational recovery, it does not protect against a site-wide disaster like a fire, flood, or extended power outage. For true business continuity, data must be replicated to a geographically separate location. This is the domain of remote replication, a critical topic for the E20-335 Exam. Because this is managed by the storage array, it is completely independent of the host operating system, server hardware, or application, making it a universally applicable solution.
The primary goal of SRDF is to enable disaster recovery (DR). In the event of a catastrophic failure at the primary data center, an organization can fail over its operations to the secondary site. The applications can be brought online using the consistent copy of the data on the R2 devices. This allows a business to resume critical operations in a different location with minimal data loss and downtime. A deep understanding of SRDF's architecture, modes of operation, and management was an absolute requirement for passing the E20-335 Exam.
SRDF/S (Synchronous) mode provides the highest level of data protection by ensuring zero data loss in the event of a disaster. It is designed for mission-critical applications where data currency is paramount. In SRDF/S mode, when a host writes data to an R1 device on the primary array, the primary array does not send the acknowledgment back to the host immediately. Instead, it first sends the write over the SRDF links to the secondary array. This process guarantees that before the application is notified of a successful write, the data is securely stored in two separate physical locations: the cache of the primary array and the cache of the secondary array. If the primary site were to fail at any moment, a consistent, up-to-the-second copy of the data would be available at the DR site. This zero Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is the key benefit of SRDF/S.
The trade-off for this level of protection is performance. The synchronous write process introduces latency, as the host must wait for the round-trip communication between the two arrays to complete. This latency is directly proportional to the distance between the two data centers. Consequently, SRDF/S is typically deployed for applications within a limited metropolitan area distance, usually under 100-200 kilometers, to keep application performance acceptable. The E20-335 Exam required candidates to understand these performance implications and when to appropriately recommend SRDF/S.
For disaster recovery scenarios that span longer distances, the latency introduced by synchronous replication becomes prohibitive. This is where SRDF/A (Asynchronous) mode is used. SRDF/A is designed to protect data over extended distances without impacting the performance of the host application at the primary site. Unlike SRDF/S, it does not wait for an acknowledgment from the remote site before acknowledging the write back to the host. The host write is completed as soon as the data is secured in the primary array's cache, resulting in no added latency for the application.
SRDF/A works by collecting a batch of writes at the primary site in a specific cache area. These writes are grouped into "delta sets." Periodically, these delta sets are transmitted to the secondary site and applied to the R2 devices in the exact same order they occurred on the primary site. This ensures that the copy at the DR site is always transactionally consistent. However, because the replication is not instantaneous, there is a small amount of data exposure. The Recovery Point Objective (RPO) for SRDF/A is typically measured in seconds to minutes, representing the data that was in transit but had not yet reached the remote site at the time of the failure.
The key benefit of SRDF/A is its ability to provide robust disaster recovery protection over virtually any distance without impacting production application performance. This makes it the ideal choice for inter-continental DR strategies or for applications that are performance-sensitive but can tolerate a minimal amount of data loss. The E20-335 Exam tested knowledge of SRDF/A's operational mechanics, including the concept of delta sets and the configuration requirements needed to support this mode of replication.
Just as with local replication, consistency is a critical concern for remote replication, especially for multi-volume applications. SRDF leverages the same Consistency Group (CG) technology to ensure that a dependent set of writes across multiple devices is replicated and applied at the remote site as a single, consistent unit. When devices are placed into an SRDF Consistency Group, the VMAX array guarantees that the order of writes is preserved across all devices in the group. This is essential for maintaining the integrity of databases and complex applications upon a failover.
For SRDF/S, consistency is maintained inherently with every write. For SRDF/A, the concept of a "transmit cycle" for the delta sets applies to the entire group. The array collects all the writes for all devices in the CG for a period of time. It then marks a consistent point-in-time and transmits that entire delta set to the remote site. This ensures that the R2 devices at the remote site always represent a valid, crash-consistent state of the application. Without CGs, one R2 volume might be a few seconds ahead of another, rendering the application data unusable.
The management of SRDF pairs and groups was a significant part of the practical knowledge required for the E20-335 Exam. Using SYMCLI, administrators use commands like symrdf addgrp, symrdf createpair, and then manage the state of the replication using verbs like establish, split, failover, and failback. Directing these commands at a device group or consistency group ensures that the operation is performed across all relevant devices simultaneously, simplifying management and guaranteeing data integrity.
SRDF offers more than just simple two-site replication. The E20-335 Exam covered several advanced topologies that provide enhanced levels of data protection and operational flexibility. One common topology is SRDF/Star. This is a three-site configuration where the primary site replicates synchronously (SRDF/S) to a nearby secondary site for zero data loss protection against local disasters. Then, the secondary site asynchronously (SRDF/A) replicates the data to a third, far-distant tertiary site. Another powerful feature is SRDF/Metro, which provides active-active access to data in two different data centers. In an SRDF/Metro configuration, the R1 and R2 devices are both read/write accessible to hosts at their respective sites. The arrays manage a distributed cache coherency mechanism to ensure data is consistent between the sites. This allows for continuous data availability and workload mobility, as an entire application can be non-disruptively moved from one site to another. A host can fail over to the other site with no interruption, providing an RPO and Recovery Time Objective (RTO) of zero.
Other features, like SRDF/Automated Recovery (SRDF/AR), provide automated workflows for failover and failback operations, simplifying what can be a complex process during a stressful disaster event. The ability to understand these different SRDF flavors and topologies allows an implementation engineer to design a data protection solution that precisely matches a customer's business requirements, from simple DR to continuous availability. This solution-oriented mindset was a key aspect of the expertise validated by the E20-335 Exam.
