A core component of this is local replication, which involves creating copies of data within the same storage array. These technologies are not primarily for disaster recovery (which involves a second site) but are essential for operational recovery. For instance, they can be used to recover from data corruption, accidental deletion of files, or to create copies of production data for use in development, testing, or reporting without impacting the production workload.
The VNX platform offers a suite of powerful local replication tools for both block and file storage. For block LUNs, the primary tools are SnapView Snapshots and SnapView Clones. For file systems, the equivalent technology is VNX Snapshots, also known as SnapSure. Each of these tools serves a different purpose and has a different underlying mechanism. A key challenge for the implementation engineer, and a focus of the E20-324 Exam, is to understand the differences between these technologies and to know when to recommend and implement the appropriate solution based on the customer's recovery objectives.
These recovery objectives are often defined by two key metrics: Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO). RPO defines the maximum acceptable amount of data loss, measured in time (e.g., one hour). RTO defines the maximum acceptable time to restore the data and resume operations. Local replication technologies are primarily designed to provide very low RPOs (minutes) and RTOs (minutes) for operational recovery scenarios, making them a fundamental part of a comprehensive data protection strategy.
SnapView Snapshots are a point-in-time copy technology for block-level LUNs on a VNX array. This is a crucial topic for the E20-324 Exam. A snapshot itself does not create a full physical copy of the source LUN. Instead, it uses a copy-on-first-write mechanism. When a snapshot is created, it essentially freezes a view of the source LUN at that moment. The snapshot initially consumes very little space. When a write is made to a block on the original source LUN for the first time after the snapshot was taken, the original data block is first copied to a reserved area called the Reserved LUN Pool before the new write is committed.
This process ensures that the snapshot can always reconstruct the LUN as it existed at the point-in-time when the snapshot was created. Subsequent writes to the same block do not trigger another copy, as the original data is already preserved. Because it only copies changed blocks, SnapView is very space-efficient compared to a full clone. This makes it ideal for creating frequent, short-term recovery points. An administrator could, for example, take a snapshot every hour to provide granular recovery options throughout the business day.
The implementation process involves creating the source LUN, creating a Reserved LUN Pool from which the snapshots will draw their space, and then creating and managing the snapshots themselves through Unisphere. An engineer must understand how to size the Reserved LUN Pool appropriately, which depends on the rate of change of the source LUN. Under-sizing the pool can cause the snapshot to be automatically fractured (invalidated), while over-sizing it wastes valuable storage capacity. The E20-324 Exam would test this practical knowledge of snapshot implementation and management.
While SnapView Snapshots are space-efficient, pointer-based copies, SnapView Clones offer a different approach to local replication for block LUNs. A clone is a full, physical, point-in-time copy of a source LUN. When a clone is created, the system initiates a background process that copies every block from the source LUN to a target LUN of the same size. Once this initial synchronization is complete, the clone LUN is a fully independent, readable, and writable copy of the source LUN as it existed at the start of the cloning operation.
Clones are particularly useful for business continuance use cases, such as creating a copy of a production database for development, testing, or running reports against. Since the clone is a separate physical copy on a different set of drives (if configured that way), the I/O load on the clone LUN does not impact the performance of the production source LUN. After the initial full copy, the clone can be incrementally synchronized with the source LUN, which speeds up subsequent refreshes of the data.
For the E20-324 Exam, it is essential to understand the distinction between a snapshot and a clone. Snapshots are dependent on the source LUN and are used for temporary, short-term recovery. Clones are independent copies used for longer-term purposes and to offload workloads. An implementation engineer must be able to configure a clone relationship, manage the synchronization process, and understand how to "fracture" the relationship to make the clone LUN independently accessible by a host. This knowledge ensures the right tool is used for the right business requirement.
Moving beyond local protection, the E20-324 Exam also covers disaster recovery (DR) solutions, which involve replicating data to a second, geographically separate storage array. For block storage on the VNX, the primary remote replication tool is MirrorView. MirrorView provides host-transparent replication of LUNs from a primary VNX array to a secondary VNX array over a Fibre Channel or iSCSI network. This ensures that a complete copy of the critical data is available at a remote site in the event of a site-wide disaster at the primary location.
MirrorView operates in two distinct modes: synchronous (MirrorView/S) and asynchronous (MirrorView/A). MirrorView/S provides zero-data-loss replication. When a host writes to the primary LUN, the write is sent to both the primary array and the secondary array. The primary array will not acknowledge the write back to the host until it receives confirmation that the write has been successfully committed on the secondary array. This guarantees that the primary and secondary copies are always identical, providing an RPO of zero. However, this comes at the cost of added latency, limiting its use to shorter distances.
MirrorView/A, on the other hand, is designed for longer distances where latency is a concern. In asynchronous mode, the primary array acknowledges writes to the host immediately. The writes are then collected and transmitted to the secondary array in batches at regular intervals. This results in a small amount of data lag between the sites, meaning there is a non-zero RPO (typically minutes). The E20-324 Exam requires a deep understanding of the differences between these two modes, their impact on host performance, their network bandwidth requirements, and the scenarios in which each is the appropriate DR solution.
Just as MirrorView provides remote replication for block data, VNX Replicator is the corresponding technology for file data, a key topic for the E20-324 Exam. VNX Replicator provides asynchronous, IP-based replication of file systems and Virtual Data Movers from a primary VNX to a secondary VNX. This enables disaster recovery for NAS environments, allowing an organization to fail over its file services to a remote site. The replication is managed by the Data Movers and transfers only the changed data, making it efficient over wide area networks (WANs).
The implementation of VNX Replicator involves setting up a replication session between a source file system on the primary array and a destination file system on the secondary array. The administrator can configure the replication schedule and monitor the session's health and RPO through Unisphere. The RPO achieved depends on the amount of data changing and the available network bandwidth. A key advantage of VNX Replicator is its ability to replicate entire VDMs. This not only copies the file system data but also all the associated configuration, such as CIFS servers, shares, exports, and network settings, which dramatically simplifies the failover process.
In the event of a disaster at the primary site, an administrator can perform a failover operation. This makes the destination file system at the DR site read-writable and brings the replicated VDM online, allowing users to connect to their file shares at the remote location with minimal disruption. After the primary site is restored, a failback operation can be performed to return services to their original location. The E20-324 Exam would test an engineer's knowledge of this entire DR lifecycle for file services, including initial setup, monitoring, failover, and failback procedures.
