A Beginner’s Guide to OOP Concepts

Inheritance lets a class reuse or extend behavior defined by another class. The derived class is often called a child or subclass; the original is the parent, base class or superclass. This is one of several ways to organize an object-oriented program, and it is useful when the child truly represents a more specific kind of the parent.

For a beginner, the essential distinction is that inheriting a method is not the same as copying all implementation details into a new file. A subclass can use inherited behavior, define new operations or override an existing method. The rules depend on the programming language.

A simple mental model

Imagine a base class representing a notification with a method that describes how to deliver a message. An email-notification subclass might supply its own delivery behavior while preserving the common interface. A caller can work with the common notification type without needing to know the exact subclass.

The relationship should make conceptual sense: an email notification is a notification. By contrast, “a notification has a database connection” is better modeled as an object holding another component, not inheriting from a database class.

How method lookup and overriding work

When an instance receives a method call, the runtime or compiler resolves the appropriate implementation according to the language’s inheritance rules. In Python, the official class tutorial explains that a derived class can override a base-class method and can invoke inherited behavior.

Overriding is useful for specialized behavior, but it can also make a hierarchy hard to follow if every subclass changes surprising aspects of the contract. A well-designed override preserves the caller’s reasonable expectations about what the method does.

Constructors and initialization

Creating a subclass instance may require initializing fields defined by the base class as well as its own data. The exact syntax differs between Python, Java, C# and other languages. In Python, cooperative initializers often call super(); in Java, constructors have their own invocation rules.

Do not assume that inheriting a class automatically initializes every property in the same way in every language. Read the language’s official documentation, then write a small test that shows the initialization order.

Single inheritance, interfaces and multiple inheritance

Java classes have one direct superclass; Java interfaces provide additional contracts and support multiple interface inheritance. Oracle’s inheritance summary makes the single-class-superclass model explicit. Python permits multiple base classes and uses method-resolution ordering to resolve a hierarchy.

These are not contradictory descriptions of object-oriented programming. They are different language designs. A beginner should first learn the rules of the language being used before generalizing about visibility, abstract classes or multiple inheritance.

Inheritance versus composition

Inheritance models a subtype relationship. Composition assembles an object out of other objects. For example, an order service may use a payment gateway component; it should not normally inherit from a payment gateway.

Composition often gives a program greater flexibility because the component can be replaced or tested independently. Use inheritance when the type relationship and shared contract are stable, and favor composition when the goal is to reuse a service without creating an artificial hierarchy.

Common beginner mistakes

Overly deep inheritance trees, unexpected overrides and confusingly shared mutable state make debugging harder. Reusing code is a benefit, but not a sufficient reason to create a subclass. Protected/private member access also differs by language, so avoid statements that every child automatically inherits every field with unrestricted access.

Test the base-class behavior and each meaningful override. When a subclass violates the promises of its base class, a seemingly clever abstraction can cause runtime errors at distant call sites.

A learning exercise

Create a base class with one simple behavior, derive two subclasses with meaningful variations and test each through the shared interface. Then rewrite the same example using composition. Observe which arrangement communicates the domain more clearly and is easier to change.

People entering programming often encounter inheritance alongside encapsulation and polymorphism. Focus first on the behavior the program needs to guarantee; the class diagram should serve that behavior rather than dictate it.

Inheritance lets a class reuse or extend behavior defined by another class.
