The aim is to observe how a permission, network path, deployment, storage choice or recovery setting changes a real application’s behavior. These exercises are suitable for an approved nonproduction subscription or a learning sandbox that supports the required resources. They are not a claim that every free account includes every service without charge.

Before starting, choose a resource-group naming convention, identify an authorized test identity, configure spending alerts, and keep a cleanup checklist. Use synthetic data and disposable credentials throughout. Record each lab’s initial requirement, commands or settings, observed result, intentional failure and final cleanup. Do not copy secrets into screenshots or notes. Run only labs whose cost and security implications you understand; a successful portal click is not sufficient evidence of the intended outcome.

Lab 1 — Prove that a virtual machine is reachable only as intended

Deploy a small VM in a test resource group and attach it to a subnet with a network security group that allows only the minimum approved management path. Prefer a secure jump or managed access method rather than exposing administrative ports to the public internet. Record the VM size, OS, network interface, disk type and public/private addressing decision. In Azure VM design, distinguish provider-managed host infrastructure from operator-controlled guest patching, identity and network access; a successful deployment does not prove that the guest is secure.

Test a legitimate connection and a connection that should be blocked, then document whether the failure occurred in DNS, routing, NSG evaluation or the guest firewall. Do not solve every connectivity problem with an allow-all inbound rule. Shut down and deallocate the test VM after use, and verify which disks or addresses remain billable until the resource group is cleaned up.

Lab 2 — Trace a private network request across two VNets

Create two small test virtual networks with nonoverlapping addresses and peer them through the supported configuration. Put an approved test endpoint in each. Verify traffic using the intended source and destination addresses, then temporarily introduce one narrow blocked route or NSG rule and observe what fails. Azure VNet peering connects explicitly peered address spaces but does not, by itself, give transit to a third network. Compare the effective routes, NSG evaluation and return path to distinguish a missing connection from a policy or routing failure.

Draw the packet path and record the effective DNS name, route and security rule. Peering connects address spaces; it does not automatically provide cross-network authorization, shared DNS, or permission to read a storage account. Remove test resources and the peering when complete so the lab does not leave a hidden network dependency.

Lab 3 — Distinguish object storage from a file share

Create a low-cost storage account and a private Blob container, upload synthetic files, and compare an ordinary data-plane read with a denied read from an identity lacking the Blob Data role. If supported by the chosen account, enable soft delete or versioning and perform a controlled recovery. Use Azure Files only if the next task truly needs SMB or NFS semantics; it is a different data access model from the Blob object API.

Record the access mode, data permissions, storage tier, redundancy and deletion/retention behavior. Do not assume that management-plane Contributor rights grant blob read access, or that a replicated account can reverse an accidental overwrite without a data-protection feature. Confirm the temporary objects and backups are removed when the experiment ends.

Lab 4 — Prove where Microsoft Entra authentication stops and RBAC begins

In an authorized tenant or controlled lab, create or use a narrowly scoped test identity and assign it a read-only role on one resource group. Confirm a permitted listing operation, then try a harmless write that should fail. Repeat with a separate identity that has a suitable data role for a storage object but no broad infrastructure-management rights. This exercise distinguishes signing in, management-plane authorization and data-plane authorization.

Record the identity, role, scope and action without exposing passwords, tokens or personally identifying access records. Microsoft Entra ID is the current product name; older Azure Active Directory wording may appear in archived labs. Revoke temporary role assignments after collecting evidence and ensure the test never grants tenant-wide administrative rights just to make one operation pass.

Lab 5 — Configure one useful Monitor alert and follow its delivery

Choose an observable metric from a disposable workload, such as sustained CPU use on a VM or an error-rate signal on a test application. Configure an appropriate Azure Monitor metric alert and an action group that routes the notification to an authorized test destination. Trigger the condition in a controlled manner, then verify the alert rule’s evaluation, the action group’s delivery and the time between them. Azure Monitor alerts are not the same thing as application recovery actions.

Intentionally remove or misconfigure the action group in a disposable context to understand how a condition can be detected without a useful notification. Restore it and test again. Keep diagnostic ingestion and retention costs visible, and delete the temporary alert and workspace when no longer needed.

Lab 6 — Deploy a web app and test a change safely

Publish a small sample web application on an Azure App Service plan or another approved managed hosting option, using a tutorial appropriate to the supported runtime. Record the deployment artifact version, configuration, application logs and health checks. Compare this operating model with Lab 1: the application team still owns code, secrets and authorization, while the platform manages more of the runtime infrastructure.

Introduce a harmless faulty configuration or broken dependency, inspect the app’s response and logs, then restore the known-good state. If the selected App Service tier supports deployment slots, rehearse a staging deployment and swap or rollback; otherwise use a documented safe alternative. Do not assume every pricing tier includes the same slot or networking features.

Lab 7 — Confirm database access, transactions and recovery

Provision a disposable Azure SQL or other supported managed relational database with a small synthetic schema. Connect with a narrowly privileged application identity, insert a test record, and exercise a transaction that updates related rows. Verify the rollback behavior when the second write fails. A managed database handles certain infrastructure duties, but application schema, credentials, access constraints and query quality still belong to the team.

Block one approved connection path deliberately, observe the resulting error, and diagnose whether the source is network exposure, identity or database permission. Explore the documented point-in-time restore behavior in a permitted lab, creating a separate safe restore target when supported. Do not destroy a database that still contains anything beyond synthetic test records.

Lab 8 — Replace an embedded secret with a managed identity

Deploy an application or function that must read one test secret from Azure Key Vault. First demonstrate why an unprivileged identity is denied access. Then configure managed identity and the minimum relevant permissions, and show that the application can retrieve that secret without storing a permanent key in source code or an environment variable. Restrict logs so the secret’s value never appears in diagnostic output.

Test an expired or removed permission to see how the application should fail safely. Document the Key Vault network path and access-control mode used by the chosen deployment. Remove the disposable secret after confirming the failure and recovery steps.

Lab 9 — Deliver one container revision and roll it back

Build a minimal containerized HTTP service and publish its image to an authorized registry. Deploy it to Azure Container Apps or another supported container hosting platform whose pricing is acceptable for the lab. Record the immutable image digest, revision or deployment identifier, health check and the identity permitted to pull the image. A successful container build does not prove that ingress, registry authorization or application startup works.

Publish a changed version that returns a deliberately detectable response, route test traffic to it, then roll back if the platform’s revision model permits. Observe logs and the actual client result rather than declaring success because the orchestrator created a pod or revision. Keep this lab separate from the deeper cluster-administration work that AKS introduces.

Lab 10 — Apply an Azure Policy rule without confusing it with permissions

At an approved test scope, assign a suitable built-in Azure Policy definition that audits a resource configuration or prevents a specifically prohibited change. Use a disposable resource to demonstrate one compliant outcome and one noncompliant outcome. Record the policy effect, scope and evaluation result, and distinguish the rule from an Azure RBAC permission check. A management-plane delete lock and a budget alert control different risks again.

Investigate whether a remediation task is actually required and supported for that policy effect; an audit result does not necessarily change an existing resource. Remove the temporary assignment and test resources afterward. Use current Azure Policy and deployment tools rather than following old Azure Blueprints tutorials as if that phased-out service were the preferred new foundation.

Lab 11 — Perform a recovery drill that proves user-level function

Protect one eligible disposable file or VM using the supported Azure Backup configuration and capture a recovery point. Simulate a reversible loss such as deleting a test file, then restore into a controlled target. Measure the restoration time, the age of the available data, required permissions and every dependency needed for the user to read the restored content. Backup and Site Recovery solve different failure problems; do not assume replication alone can recover a deleted or corrupted file.

Finish with an application-level verification and a cleanup check. Recovery is not proven by a green backup job if the restored data is unreadable, keys are missing, or network access prevents the test user from reaching it. Record the expected recovery-point and recovery-time objectives and compare them with the observed result.

Turn eleven experiments into one credible skills record

Keep a compact record per lab: the requirement, initial architecture, identity and cost boundaries, intentional failure, diagnostic evidence, corrective action, final observed behavior and resource cleanup. Put code or infrastructure configuration in a reviewed repository only if it contains no secrets. A portfolio should say what you personally implemented and what the managed platform supplied; completed instructions are not proof of production ownership.

These labs are intentionally varied because cloud roles are varied. An AZ-900 learner may use them to understand product boundaries without completing all advanced steps, while administrator, networking, security, database and development candidates should go deeper in the areas matching their actual responsibilities. Use Microsoft’s current issuer objectives to choose further work, and never claim a retired exam’s training content is the active route merely because an old course still appears in search results.

Eleven small Azure labs can teach more than one enormous demonstration environment when each exercise asks a clear operational question.
