It executes programs in JVM bytecode and supports languages with very different type systems, syntax, and programming styles. Choosing one of those languages, however, involves more than confirming that it can access a Java library. Teams should consider ecosystem maintenance, tooling, deployment model, interoperability, and the costs of teaching the language to future maintainers.

How languages run on the JVM

A JVM language may compile directly to bytecode, compile to Java source first, or use an interpreter integrated with JVM classes. Those routes are not identical. Direct bytecode compilation generally makes interaction with Java class libraries straightforward, but differences in nullability, generics, collections, exceptions, and concurrency can still produce friction at the boundary. If a team integrates two languages, it should test the calling patterns that its production code actually uses.

“Runs on the JVM” also should not be confused with “runs anywhere without change.” The application may depend on native libraries, a particular JVM release, framework configuration, build-tool plugins, or operating-system services. Java interoperability is an advantage, not a substitute for compatibility testing.

Java: the default comparison point

Java remains the reference language for most JVM APIs, libraries, and tooling. Its static typing, mature build systems, stable runtime behavior, and breadth of community knowledge make it a practical default for large services. Modern Java also has records, improved pattern matching, and other features that address problems once handled mainly by alternate JVM languages. A team’s reason to switch should therefore be tied to a real engineering benefit rather than a general belief that Java syntax is obsolete.

Kotlin: concise, strongly typed, interoperable

Kotlin is statically typed and designed for Java interoperability. It offers null-safety features, data classes, extension functions, and coroutines that many developers find useful in application code. Kotlin works in server-side applications as well as in Android development, but its use in one context does not automatically guarantee the same ecosystem support in another.

An interoperability check should cover null values arriving from Java, framework reflection, generated bytecode, and the behavior of shared interfaces. A migration can be incremental, but an organization should maintain consistent style rules so the codebase does not become two disconnected programming cultures.

Scala: expressive types and functional approaches

Scala blends object-oriented and functional programming with a rich type system. It supports concise transformations, immutable-data patterns, and expressive abstractions. These capabilities can improve domain modeling, especially for teams willing to invest in type-system expertise. They can also raise onboarding and build-complexity costs.

Version compatibility and library ecosystem fit matter. Teams should confirm framework support for their chosen Scala language version rather than assuming a library or example from a different Scala generation will compile unchanged.

Groovy: scripting, build workflows, and dynamic features

Groovy can provide a more flexible syntax familiar to Java developers. It supports dynamic behavior and optional static compilation, and it has historically been used in automation, build scripts, and enterprise applications. The engineering tradeoff is between convenient scripting and greater need for runtime tests in dynamically typed sections. A team’s Groovy deployment should be evaluated alongside its build system and supported Java release.

Clojure: Lisp-style data and functional composition

Clojure emphasizes immutable data structures, functions, and a Lisp syntax. Its emphasis on data transformations can suit event processing or systems where controlled state change matters. Java interoperability is useful, though data structure conversions, Java method dispatch, and operational tooling must be understood. The biggest decision is usually whether the team benefits from Clojure’s functional model enough to justify the different syntax and debugging approach.

JRuby: Ruby semantics with JVM integration

JRuby implements Ruby on the JVM and can make Java APIs accessible to Ruby-oriented applications. It may be useful for teams with Ruby expertise that require Java integration or JVM deployment. It should not be treated as a simple replacement for MRI Ruby without testing C extensions, gems, performance-sensitive code, and runtime dependencies.

Jython: a historically important but version-constrained implementation

Jython provides Python-language integration with Java classes. Its public project website states that the current Jython 2.7.x release supports Python 2 syntax, while Python 3 work is under development. That is a major constraint for new Python programs and security maintenance decisions. Do not recommend Jython as a drop-in JVM implementation for modern Python 3 libraries.

For a legacy JVM application whose embedded scripting is already built around Jython, inventory the actual Python version and libraries before planning upgrades. For new projects, investigate whether process-level integration, an API boundary, or a different language provides a more supportable design. See the Jython project status.

Ceylon and other historical projects

Ceylon was an experimental language focused on strong typing, modularity, and Java interoperability. The maintainers’ GitHub repositories now explicitly mark central components as deprecated. It remains worth mentioning in a historical overview of JVM language design, but not as a straightforward current choice for a greenfield production service.

Other experimental or niche projects—including Fantom, Xtend, Eta, Frege, and various alternate toolchains—illustrate different attempts to bridge Java APIs with alternative language ideas. Their present viability varies, and even when source code remains available, the team must verify maintenance activity, release compatibility, security updates, and dependency support. An archival example is not proof of an actively supported runtime.

The Ceylon project’s repository listing records deprecated status for its main language and compiler modules.

GraalVM is a runtime/toolchain, not another JVM language

GraalVM may be relevant to JVM compilation and application deployment strategies, including ahead-of-time native images and polyglot execution. It is not a language that competes with Kotlin or Scala in the same category. Native-image compilation can change startup behavior and operational footprint, but reflection, dynamic loading, and build-time initialization require explicit testing. Performance results depend on the actual workload; vendor benchmark claims should not replace reproducible measurement.

Choose by actual constraints rather than popularity

Decision need

Reasonable evaluation starting point

Main verification

Broad Java library and hiring compatibility

Java

Supported JVM release and framework versions

Concise null-aware application code

Kotlin

Java boundary, build plugins, team expertise

Functional abstractions and strong type modeling

Scala

Library and language-version compatibility

Flexible JVM-based scripting

Groovy

Runtime test coverage and Java compatibility

Immutable data and Lisp-oriented development

Clojure

Operational tooling and team learning curve

Ruby integration with JVM libraries

JRuby

Gem/native-extension compatibility

Existing Python 2 JVM scripting

Jython (legacy assessment)

Python-version constraints and migration path

Run a small compatibility experiment before committing

Build the same narrow service or library adapter in two candidate languages. Exchange an object with a Java dependency, throw and handle an exception, exercise asynchronous work, package an artifact, and deploy it into the intended environment. Measure build reliability, observability, debugging effort, startup behavior, and maintenance clarity—not just lines of code.

For existing Java systems, the best JVM language is often the one that removes an important friction point without adding uncontrolled interoperability or maintenance risk. Historical languages still teach useful design ideas, but production choices depend on current stewardship and verifiable compatibility.

The Java Virtual Machine is more than the runtime behind Java.
