TOEFL iBT preparation in late 2026 must be built around the version of the test actually being administered. Starting January 21, 2026, ETS introduced revised task types and a new reporting scale. Much older tutorials describing the former independent speaking tasks, integrated essay format, or universal 0–120 score as the sole current report no longer give an accurate picture. Those materials can teach English skills, but their exam strategy must be updated.

The current TOEFL content guide organizes the assessment around Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. Reading includes Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage. Listening includes response selection, conversations, announcements, and academic talks. Writing includes Build a Sentence, Write an Email, and Write for an Academic Discussion. Speaking includes Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview.

Begin with a current task inventory

A useful first step is to create a page in the study notebook for every current task. For reading, distinguish vocabulary and sentence completion from understanding an extended academic passage. For listening, practice retaining the speaker’s purpose and details without relying on a written transcript. For writing, work on grammatical control and communication appropriate to both everyday and academic contexts.

Speaking preparation should reflect the actual response types. Listening and repeating clearly requires different practice from participating in an interview-style sequence. A polished speech prepared for an obsolete prompt may be ineffective on a current task. Use official sample materials where available to learn the interface and scoring expectations.

Treat timing as a variable in the adaptive experience

ETS describes a test that takes roughly two hours including the four assessed skills, but exact items and timing may vary with adaptive delivery and instructions. Do not build the study plan around old per-section minutes copied from a pre-2026 prep book. Practice concentration across a sustained period, then rehearse current tasks within their actual constraints once you have format-matched materials.

Use a diagnostic to separate language gaps from format confusion. If a response is weak because the student misunderstood a task, reread the instructions before adding hours of vocabulary study. If language fluency is the problem, choose targeted practice in sentence formation, pronunciation clarity, reading comprehension, or listening inference.

Read the new score report correctly

The ETS score guidance explains the 1–6 section and overall scoring scale, reported in half-point increments, for tests taken from January 21, 2026. ETS also provides a comparable overall score on the former 0–120 scale during a two-year transition. A student should check which scale and section conditions a specific institution requires instead of applying an old universal minimum without conversion context.

The overall new-scale result is based on the four section scores according to ETS rounding rules. One strong section does not guarantee that every program’s separate language requirement has been satisfied. Check the receiving university or licensing body’s currently published criteria.

Practice ethically and plan score submission

Use official ETS materials and legitimate original practice rather than allegedly recalled live items. This protects exam integrity and more reliably teaches transferable language ability. Book a test date that leaves room for score processing, possible retesting under current rules, and application deadlines. Check the current identity and test-center or home-edition requirements for the exact appointment.

The strongest TOEFL foundation is a specific skill plan: understand each current task, practice it repeatedly with fresh material, diagnose language weaknesses, and interpret results on the correct scale. English proficiency, not familiarity with obsolete answer templates, should drive the final result.
