Graduate applicants sometimes encounter two incompatible descriptions of the GRE: an older test that lasted almost four hours and the current, much shorter General Test. The version introduced on September 22, 2023 is approximately one hour and 58 minutes long. According to ETS’s GRE test structure, it now contains five sections: one Analytical Writing task, two Verbal Reasoning sections, and two Quantitative Reasoning sections. Older resources describing two essays and a longer set of scored sections need updating.

Before choosing study books, a candidate should understand what each measure actually tests and whether the intended graduate, business, or law programs accept or require GRE scores. Those requirements belong to individual institutions and can change by program or admissions cycle. A strong general score cannot substitute for prerequisites or materials specified by a particular department.

What the sections measure

Analytical Writing contains a single 30-minute “Analyze an Issue” task. It asks you to examine a proposition and develop a reasoned response. The older “Analyze an Argument” task is not part of the current GRE General Test. Verbal Reasoning tests comprehension and analysis of written material, relationships among words and ideas, and evidence-based selection among options. Quantitative Reasoning tests mathematical reasoning using familiar topics such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis.

ETS specifies 27 Verbal questions in two sections (12 followed by 15) and 27 Quantitative questions (12 followed by 15). The time allowances are 18 and 23 minutes for Verbal and 21 and 26 minutes for Quantitative. Analytical Writing is first, while Verbal and Quantitative sections may follow in different orders. Those figures matter when planning realistic drills; a practice set built for an obsolete 20-question section can train the wrong pace.

Adaptation and scoring need separate explanations

The current Verbal and Quantitative measures are section-level adaptive. The difficulty of the second section is influenced by performance on the first, and candidates may review or change responses within a section. That differs from a test where every individual next question changes after each answer. ETS reports Verbal and Quantitative scores separately from 130 to 170 in one-point increments and Analytical Writing from 0 to 6 in half-point increments.

Percentiles describe relative performance within a comparison group; they are not guarantees of graduate-school admission. A Quantitative 160 and a Verbal 160 are not interchangeable evidence for program fit. Admissions committees may weigh measures differently and use the rest of the application to judge preparation, research interest and experience.

Start by auditing both programs and skills

List prospective programs, their application deadlines, and whether each currently requires, accepts optionally, or does not consider GRE scores. Use the institution’s live admissions instructions as the authority. If testing is relevant, compare the time available before the deadline with score-reporting and possible retesting. Avoid buying an extensive preparation package before establishing whether the exam is necessary.

Next, sample current-format questions in all three measures. Identify concrete weak areas such as ratio translation, inference from a passage, or argumentative organization. Sort them into concepts you must learn and skills you know but cannot yet execute reliably under time pressure. This distinction prevents spending weeks reviewing familiar material while important gaps remain untouched.

Choose current-format practice

ETS’s POWERPREP materials offer official test previews and practice experiences, including free options. Learn the calculator, review and navigation functions before your first serious timed test. An untimed test is useful for familiarization; a timed test is better for pacing. After each rehearsal, write a short diagnosis explaining what you will do differently in the next study block.

A manageable sequence begins with learning the structure, finding a baseline, repairing the biggest weaknesses, and then reassessing. Preparing for all measures does not mean giving them equal study time; the balance should follow your errors and the programs you plan to apply to.

A realistic definition of readiness

There is no universal GRE passing score. A result has meaning in relation to your target programs, their policies and your other qualifications. Read score scales and percentiles correctly, set section-specific goals, and avoid claims that a particular number ensures an offer. A strong starting plan makes the exam a bounded application task rather than an indefinite source of anxiety.
