The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) helps business schools evaluate quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning and the ability to interpret data. Applicants often find conflicting descriptions online because the exam was redesigned. The current GMAT is not the older four-section test with Analytical Writing Assessment and Integrated Reasoning, and its score is not reported on the old 200\u2013800 scale. Before choosing materials or booking an appointment, understand the current structure.<\/p>\n

Current GMAT structure: three sections, 64 questions<\/h3>\n

The current GMAT has three 45-minute sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights. Together they contain 64 questions across 2 hours and 15 minutes of testing, with one optional 10-minute break. The question distribution is 21 in Quantitative Reasoning, 23 in Verbal Reasoning and 20 in Data Insights. Candidates may choose the order of the three sections. These numbers come from the exam owner’s current GMAT exam structure<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Older prep materials may discuss a 30-minute Integrated Reasoning section, a separate Analytical Writing Assessment essay or a three-hour exam. Those belonged to the previous edition. The former sections should not be practiced as though they are scored components of a current GMAT sitting. Some underlying skills still matter, particularly interpreting information and evaluating arguments, but study time should be mapped to today’s Quantitative, Verbal and Data Insights content.<\/p>\n

Quantitative Reasoning rewards mathematical judgment<\/h3>\n

The Quantitative Reasoning section tests how well you analyze a problem, choose an appropriate method, and check whether the result answers the question actually asked. Memorizing formulas without understanding their assumptions often fails under time pressure. Focus on arithmetic, elementary algebra and related quantitative reasoning appropriate to the official blueprint; do not assume every topic from a decade-old study book remains relevant.<\/p>\n

A sound practice routine moves from untimed diagnosis to timed application. After a wrong answer, classify whether the issue was choosing the wrong equation, making a computational mistake, overlooking an assumption, or losing track of the required quantity. Review a correct answer as well when it was based on a guess or an unnecessarily long calculation. The purpose of review is to reduce recurring errors, not to maximize the number of completed questions.<\/p>\n

Verbal Reasoning is about interpreting arguments and text<\/h3>\n

Verbal Reasoning assesses reading comprehension and critical reasoning. Reading practice should emphasize a passage’s purpose, structure and implications. Critical Reasoning practice should emphasize the relationship between a claim and its evidence, the role of unstated assumptions and the effect of counterexamples. Clear argument mapping matters more than memorizing impressive vocabulary.<\/p>\n

Some older GMAT materials emphasize Sentence Correction as a core scored question type in the former exam. Candidates must verify each resource against the current blueprint rather than equating the old verbal question mix with today’s version. Use official practice to build familiarity with the wording and response choices candidates will actually see.<\/p>\n

Data Insights is a full scored section, not an add-on<\/h3>\n

Data Insights asks the test taker to make sense of information presented in tables, graphics and other sources and to draw appropriate conclusions. Some tasks require integrating several pieces of evidence; others require judging whether available information is sufficient for a decision. Business-school coursework often involves exactly this kind of information triage, but familiar business context is no substitute for reading each chart and condition precisely.<\/p>\n

For example, a table may show regional revenue growth while hiding changes in the size of the underlying customer base. The right answer depends on which measure the question requests, not merely which number appears largest. During review, write down the difference between the data supplied and the inference the question asked you to make. Develop the habit of checking units, percentages and denominators before calculating.<\/p>\n

Understanding the 205\u2013805 total-score scale<\/h3>\n

The current GMAT Total Score ranges from 205 to 805, increasing in 10-point intervals. Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights contribute equally to the total score. Each has a section-score scale of 60 to 90. The current scale and the previous 200\u2013800 scale are not numerically interchangeable. A 700 from an old edition and a 700 from the current edition should not be compared as equal achievements; the exam owner recommends using percentile information when interpreting historical scores. Applicants should research the requirements and recent admitted-student profiles of their target programs. A strong GMAT performance can support an application, but no score guarantees admission, a scholarship, or a particular salary. Work experience, academic record, recommendations, goals and each program’s admissions policy remain relevant.<\/p>\n

Use the current test’s review features during practice<\/h3>\n

The current exam permits a question-review process at the end of a section and lets candidates modify a limited number of responses. That flexibility does not make time management irrelevant. You still must allocate enough time to reach the end of each section and understand when revisiting a bookmarked question is worthwhile. Practice the official interface rather than assuming unlimited backward navigation or the ability to change any answer at any moment.<\/p>\n

For each full-length mock, follow the exact three-section duration and the permitted break, then evaluate performance by subject, question type, timing and answer changes. Do not spend weeks repeatedly taking full tests without reviewing them. Official materials help ensure the scoring interpretation and question design resemble the current exam, while supplementary resources are best judged by the accuracy of their explanations and whether they explicitly target this edition.<\/p>\n

Registration, fees, accessibility and score sending<\/h3>\n

There is no safe universal GMAT fee to print for all candidates. Registration charges can vary with country, currency and test delivery format, and changes to appointments or score reporting may introduce additional charges. Check the price shown in the live registration flow and review the official fee and waiver guidance<\/a>. Some applicants may qualify for fee-waiver opportunities distributed through participating programs; this is not an automatic discount.<\/p>\n

Check identification requirements, permitted test-center materials, online-testing conditions where available and accommodation lead times before choosing a sitting. Score validity and retake rules should be confirmed against current official policy when scheduling around application deadlines. Leave a margin for score delivery and the requirements of individual schools rather than registering at the last possible moment.<\/p>\n

Choose a study plan by diagnosis, not by resource volume<\/h3>\n

Begin with a current-format diagnostic and compare your results with the demands of your school list. Establish separate targets for the three scored sections. During the next phase, use short practice sets to repair specific weaknesses. A candidate who has strong algebra but struggles to interpret multi-source evidence should not devote equal extra time to both topics simply because a course allocates equal chapters.<\/p>\n

Then add timed section practice and periodic complete mocks. Keep an error log that distinguishes concept gaps from reading mistakes, pacing choices and avoidable calculations. In the final two weeks, spend more time on genuine recurring errors than on unfamiliar tricks. Good preparation makes the current test predictable in its structure without pretending the questions themselves will be familiar.<\/p>\n

The GMAT is best approached as a decision-making assessment with three equally weighted areas.
