A strong preparation plan begins with the exam that is administered now rather than a blueprint preserved in an old study guide. The multiple-choice test has changed substantially since 2024, and its delivery arrangements also changed for the 2026–2027 testing cycle.

What the LSAT actually tests in 2026

The current multiple-choice LSAT contains four sections lasting 35 minutes each. Two scored sections assess Logical Reasoning, one scored section assesses Reading Comprehension, and a fourth, unscored section is either Logical Reasoning or Reading Comprehension. The unscored section helps the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) evaluate future questions. Because candidates are not told which section is unscored, every section deserves full effort. A 10-minute intermission is scheduled between sections two and three.

Analytical Reasoning, often called Logic Games, was removed from the scored exam beginning in August 2024. This is a consequential difference from older preparation manuals that still divide study time between Logical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension and diagramming games. Applicants preparing for a current administration should not devote a third of their study schedule to the removed section. LSAC explains the current structure in its official LSAT specifications.

Logical Reasoning questions ask candidates to understand a short argument, identify its assumptions, judge the strength of evidence, spot flawed inference or determine how new information changes an argument. Reading Comprehension requires a different pace: you must track complex passages, distinguish a main claim from supporting detail, compare perspectives and recognize what follows from the text. Neither section rewards memorizing legal terminology.

Why two Logical Reasoning sections change preparation priorities

With two of the three scored sections devoted to Logical Reasoning, error patterns in argument analysis now have especially strong consequences. An efficient diagnostic separates missed questions into causes. Did you misunderstand the conclusion? Mistake a correlation for a cause? Overlook a qualification? Select an answer that sounded plausible but made a stronger claim than the stimulus allowed? The purpose of an error log is to explain the reasoning failure, not merely to record a score.

A useful method is to solve a small set without a timer, explain each answer in your own words, and only then reduce the allowed time. For weakening and strengthening questions, identify the argument’s causal or inferential hinge before examining the choices. For necessary-assumption questions, test whether denying a proposed assumption would damage the argument. For flaw questions, name the actual error rather than memorizing labels in isolation. These habits transfer across different question phrasings.

Timed reasoning practice matters, but an average minutes-per-question target is not a strict ceiling. Some questions can be resolved quickly; others require careful comparison. Develop section-level checkpoints and learn to leave a stubborn item temporarily when further analysis would consume time needed elsewhere. There is no penalty for an incorrect answer, so a reasoned selection is preferable to leaving an answer blank.

Reading Comprehension: read for structure rather than isolated details

Many readers try to memorize every sentence. A more productive approach is to identify the issue being discussed, the author’s position, the function of each paragraph and any competing view. Pay special attention to qualifications such as however, only if and unless. These often determine why a tempting answer is too broad.

During review, locate the exact sentence or passage relationship supporting the correct response. For comparison passages, map agreement and disagreement without assuming the authors share a conclusion merely because they discuss the same issue. To build endurance, practice with long-form nonfiction and explain its argument before checking whether you retained minor facts. Use recent official questions for actual test-pattern practice because general reading material cannot replicate LSAT answer-choice design.

The separate LSAT Argumentative Writing requirement

The LSAT also requires an unscored writing sample called LSAT Argumentative Writing, completed separately from the multiple-choice test. The task presents a debatable issue and several perspectives, then asks the writer to take and support a position while engaging with the discussion. For most test takers, the writing session provides 15 minutes of prewriting analysis and 35 minutes to write. It is remotely proctored even when the multiple-choice LSAT is taken at a test center.

The writing sample is not part of the 120–180 multiple-choice score, but a completed and approved sample must be on file for that score to be released. Treat it as a genuine application requirement: practice building a clear claim, using evidence, addressing a counterargument, and organizing a concise response. Review the LSAC writing instructions rather than relying on older references to a choice-between-two-positions prompt.

Scoring and the meaning of a competitive result

The LSAT reports a scaled score from 120 to 180 based on performance on the scored multiple-choice sections. An individual law school’s expectations depend on its applicant pool and admission profile. A score that is competitive for one program may be below the recent median for another. Build a school list and examine each school’s published admissions information before choosing a target; a universal ‘good LSAT score’ would mislead applicants with very different goals.

Practice tests are estimates of readiness, not guarantees. Record the score, timing, patterns of mistakes and the conditions under which the practice test was taken. Compare multiple recent results rather than drawing a conclusion from the best score alone. When deciding whether to retest, weigh available preparation time, application deadlines and the admissions value of a plausible improvement.

Registration and the 2026–2027 test-center change

Starting with the August 2026 LSAT, the multiple-choice exam moved toward test-center administration for almost all candidates, with limited remote-testing exceptions, including certain approved accommodations and distance circumstances. LSAT Argumentative Writing remains separately administered online. A guide that assumes everyone can simply choose a remote multiple-choice appointment is therefore outdated. Applicants should verify their administration’s modality, scheduling window, required identification and accommodation process using LSAC’s current instructions.

International dates, testing locations, registration deadlines and score-release dates do not necessarily match the domestic schedule. Check the official LSAT dates and deadlines for the relevant jurisdiction. Register early enough to leave space for timed practice, the writing requirement and any technical or identification checks.

A practical study sequence that respects the current blueprint

Start with one current-format diagnostic, preferably through LSAC’s official LawHub materials. In the first phase, work on basic argument structure, inference and reading-passage mapping without speed pressure. In the middle phase, alternate targeted drills with timed Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension sections. The two reasoning sections warrant substantial practice, but do not neglect reading if it remains your largest source of lost points.

In the final phase, complete full four-section simulations with the 10-minute intermission in the correct position, then examine every uncertain answer. Simulate the test setting you are actually authorized to use rather than practicing an obsolete remote format. A score chart is helpful only when paired with an explanation of why errors changed. Reserve the last days for familiar question types, logistics and adequate sleep instead of a rush to learn every possible trick.

The most reliable LSAT preparation is deliberate and current: study the two scored reasoning sections and one scored reading section, meet the separate writing requirement, and plan around the applicable in-center testing rules. The goal is not a flawless rehearsal, but stable reasoning under unfamiliar questions and a realistic understanding of what the chosen law schools require.

The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) assesses how applicants analyze arguments and read demanding material, not how much law they already know.
