It is responding precisely to a question while sustaining an understandable argument in English. A candidate can write fluent sentences and still lose marks by avoiding the prompt, repeating one reason, or making a conclusion that does not follow the essay. The official IELTS Academic Writing format sets a minimum of 250 words for Task 2 and recommends approximately 40 minutes of the 60-minute Writing test. Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the Writing band, making the quality of those 40 minutes especially important.

The same basic Task 2 essay requirement applies to the General Training Writing test, although Task 1 differs. This distinction matters when candidates use an Academic practice book for a General Training application. A Task 2 answer must be connected prose rather than notes or bullet points. Writing far beyond the minimum earns no automatic bonus; it may leave insufficient time to proofread or finish the other task.

The four marks are a diagnostic map

Examiners evaluate Task 2 using Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. These four criteria receive equal weight within the task. The official IELTS writing resources also clarify that Task 2 carries greater weight than Task 1. It is therefore misleading to promise a band score on the basis of one feature, such as an impressive introduction or a particular number of advanced words.

Task Response asks whether the candidate has answered every part of the actual question, taken a clear position where required, and developed ideas with relevant support. Coherence and Cohesion cover progression, paragraph organization and connections between ideas. Lexical Resource concerns accurate and appropriate vocabulary, including flexibility and spelling. Grammatical Range and Accuracy concern sentence structures and control of errors. A realistic review needs to locate evidence for all four rather than award a score by impression.

Begin by decoding the task

Before writing, underline the operative instructions. A prompt asking whether you agree or disagree demands an identifiable position; a prompt requesting discussion of both views and an opinion demands all three components. An advantages-and-disadvantages question is not automatically an invitation to argue only one side. Rephrase the issue in your own words to test comprehension, then jot two defensible points that can be explained with a specific example.

A useful planning question is, “What must a skeptical reader understand before accepting my conclusion?” That question encourages logical connections rather than generic memorized sentences. It is better to develop one precise reason fully than to scatter six unsupported assertions across short paragraphs. If an example is hypothetical, present it as an illustration, not as a fabricated statistical fact.

Build paragraphs around reasoning

The introduction should establish the subject and your response without rehearsing every point. Each central paragraph can state one claim, clarify why it matters, show an example or consequence, and connect back to the overall position. A conclusion should resolve the task without introducing a new argument. Linking words can assist, but repeated “moreover” and “furthermore” do not substitute for genuine relationships between ideas.

Consider an essay about whether cities should prioritize public transport. A weak paragraph may assert that buses are beneficial and repeat that people like them. A stronger paragraph describes how a reliable route can reduce the need for private car journeys, explains the condition that frequency must be sufficient, and acknowledges that underserved neighborhoods require different implementation. This is developed reasoning, not an exercise in stacking high-level adjectives.

Audit the language without sacrificing clarity

Review grammar and vocabulary for meaning first. A longer subordinate clause is not better if its agreement or punctuation becomes unstable. Common words used accurately can be preferable to unusual synonyms that distort a claim. Spelling matters under Lexical Resource, but IELTS does not publish an automatic deduction of one band for a fixed number of spelling errors; accuracy is judged as part of the wider descriptor. Candidates may use established British or American spelling consistently where appropriate.

Do a two-pass check: first verify the task was fully answered and ideas connect, then correct referents, tense changes, articles and repeated words. Timed practice should include this editing window rather than end at the final sentence. The aim is not flawless ornamental English; it is language that allows an examiner to follow a complete argument with minimal effort.

Use self-marking cautiously

After each timed essay, compare the script with the public band descriptors and identify one clear strength and one specific revision target for every criterion. A teacher can provide calibrated feedback, but a self-assigned band is an estimate, not an official score. Keep successive drafts so changes in argument development, paragraph logic and error patterns are visible.

This method turns Task 2 preparation from memorizing model phrases into a repeatable writing process: interpret, plan, argue, revise, and evaluate. The process is valuable beyond the test because it trains the same disciplined communication that a university or workplace will later demand.

The central challenge in IELTS Writing Task 2 is not producing a long essay.
