The real difficulty appears when those resources interact. A user can have permission to create a storage account but still fail a Policy check. A managed identity can authenticate while a private endpoint routes the application to the wrong address. An apparently successful deployment can hide an unrecoverable application.

Microsoft’s current AZ-104 administration outline brings those interactions together across five areas: identities and governance, storage, compute, networking, and monitoring with recovery. Understanding the basics means being able to trace a business request through those areas, not merely listing services. Start with a small environment you can safely change, observe and tear down.

Start every task with scope and responsibility

Before provisioning a resource, know the tenant, subscription, resource group, region, environment, owner and intended users. A management group or subscription policy can affect resources inside a group; an Azure RBAC assignment at the wrong scope can expose more infrastructure than intended. Resource locks protect against certain accidental management operations, while tags and budgets improve ownership and cost visibility. None of these controls is interchangeable.

Suppose a developer asks for permission to read a storage container. The Azure administrator should verify whether the request is for management-plane actions or Blob data operations, assign an appropriate role and scope, and test a real read with the intended identity. Giving Contributor on the entire subscription would make many errors disappear while creating an unjustified security risk.

Storage combines identity, networking and recoverability

An Azure storage account is not just a place to upload files. The redundancy choice affects resilience, access tiering affects cost and retrieval behavior, versioning or soft delete can mitigate accidental deletion, and network rules affect where requests may originate. A shared access signature can delegate limited access when appropriate, but its expiration and permissions should fit a genuine workflow and should not become an untracked permanent credential.

Practice a private blob read using a scoped identity. Then deliberately remove the Blob Data role and record the response. Re-enable the role but block the network path and compare the symptoms. Those two failures may both appear as an application access problem, yet they belong to different systems and require different corrective actions.

Compute choices change who does the operating work

Virtual machines offer guest operating-system control, which brings responsibility for patching, disk layout, monitoring, backup and capacity. App Service manages much of the hosting layer, but its plan scaling, deployment slots, certificate bindings, identities and network access still require administration. Container Instances and Container Apps can suit supported container workloads with different lifecycle and orchestration needs; choosing among them depends on the actual task.

For a small API, compare a VM and App Service by writing down the required runtime, scaling pattern, networking, release process and restore expectations. A lower nominal compute price is not a complete cost comparison if it adds patching, operating-system hardening and recovery work the team cannot sustain.

Networking requires a path and a proof

A virtual network, subnet, NSG, user-defined route, DNS zone and private endpoint participate in different stages of reaching a service. Peering can make two VNets reachable without making their DNS data or security controls identical. Administrators should describe one failing flow with a source, destination hostname, resolved IP, TCP/UDP port and observed error, then check DNS, routes and effective filters in that order when appropriate.

Use Azure Network Watcher tools as evidence: a connection troubleshooting result can narrow the failing hop; effective routes and security rules explain why. Do not open every port or make a storage account public merely because the application still fails. Trace the actual dependency and adjust the smallest relevant control.

Automation needs preflight, review and rollback

ARM templates and Bicep allow resource definitions to be maintained with the rest of a team’s versioned infrastructure. A safe deployment process records the target scope and current resources, validates inputs, previews the change through supported tooling and examines permissions and policies before applying changes. A green deployment status does not prove that an application can access its dependencies or that no unintended resource was created.

Put a change through a disposable resource group first. Observe exactly which resource properties change and document one rollback or corrective operation. Learn what happens when a policy denies a requested configuration: the right action is usually to reconcile the requirement and the policy, not automatically grant the deployment operator greater privileges.

Monitoring must lead to a decision

Azure Monitor metrics, diagnostic logs and action-group notifications answer different questions. Pick a real failure to detect—for example sustained API errors or inability to reach a dependency—before choosing an alert threshold and owner. A rule that sends a notification nobody recognizes is not operational coverage. Review how alert processing rules affect notification behavior during maintenance without confusing suppression with fixing a failure.

For a VM timing out to storage, correlate service symptoms, network evidence and storage request results rather than assuming high CPU. A log query can show denied operations or latency while a metric alert reveals an increasing rate. Keep enough telemetry for troubleshooting, with explicit retention and cost choices.

Plan for a restore before a failure

Backup policies protect selected workloads and recovery points, but the administrator must prove that a restore produces usable data and a working service. Site Recovery serves different continuity scenarios by coordinating replication and failover of supported workloads. Design protection from RPO/RTO requirements, then test a restore in an approved environment and record dependencies on identity, networking and application state.

Close every hands-on practice session with a short operator note: what was requested, what changed, what failed, how it was verified and what must be cleaned up. That habit is the most portable skill in Azure administration. It turns isolated service knowledge into an environment another person can safely operate.

Azure administrators are often introduced to the platform through separate tutorials: create a virtual machine, configure a storage account, build a virtual network, set a policy and view an alert.
