A memorized diagram of every gateway is not enough. The current Microsoft AZ-700 blueprint, with skills measured from July 27, 2026, covers core networking, connectivity, application delivery, private access and network security. These are interdependent engineering decisions, not five unrelated product inventories.

Use one scenario across the whole study plan: a regional application must serve customers over HTTPS, reach a private database, accept controlled administration from a branch office, and survive a localized failure. Security teams require limited public exposure and an explanation of traffic flow. Operations need to diagnose latency and drops. Every design choice below should be tested against those requirements and recorded with a reason for rejecting at least one alternative.

Establish the address, route and DNS plan first

Begin by drawing the virtual networks, subnets, address ranges and on-premises networks. Choose nonoverlapping IP ranges for any networks that may need peering or hybrid connectivity. Reserve adequate space for services whose subnet size or delegation rules matter, including network gateways and private endpoints. Changing a rushed addressing scheme later can interrupt routing and require more coordination than a fresh deployment.

Now decide how packets reach the destination. A virtual network connection and a peering relationship do not automatically mean every route is transitive. Evaluate default system routes, user-defined routes, gateway transit, and any firewall or network virtual appliance hop. A VNet peering exercise becomes valuable when you predict the route first, then compare it with the effective route Azure applies. Test the failure caused by a conflicting UDR before making changes blindly.

Keep name resolution separate from routing. An application that reaches a public database IP may appear to have working connectivity while violating the design requirement for private access. Document the names the client resolves, the zone that holds the record, the DNS resolver in use, and which linked virtual networks can query it. Private DNS zones and Azure DNS Private Resolver can be relevant in hybrid designs; public DNS zone hosting answers a different need.

Choose hybrid connectivity to match business constraints

Site-to-site VPN Gateway is often a practical way to connect a branch network to Azure across the internet using encryption and configured routing. Point-to-site VPN solves a related but distinct remote-client access problem. ExpressRoute provides private connectivity through a connectivity provider and introduces peering, routing, redundancy and service-provider considerations. It is not automatically a substitute for every security control or a guarantee that the application cannot be reached through some other route.

For the branch-office requirement, record expected throughput, latency tolerance, failure recovery, address overlap and the extent of private connectivity required. Compare two viable designs: an appropriately sized VPN Gateway with redundancy versus ExpressRoute with a separately planned failure path. Evaluate whether the organization can manage routing changes and provider incidents. Azure Virtual WAN can reduce network-hub management for large distributed estates, but its hub scale, connections, routing policies and price must be justified by the actual number of sites and traffic patterns.

Build a safe lab for routing. Establish the connection, verify the advertised prefixes, test both directions, and document how a failure would be detected. Do not infer that an IPSec tunnel state of “connected” proves that application authorization or DNS resolution will work.

Pick the correct application-delivery layer

Azure Load Balancer works at transport layer and is appropriate when the requirement concerns IP and port distribution to backend services. Application Gateway handles HTTP/S behavior such as routing by path or host, TLS configuration, health probes and web application firewall options. Azure Front Door is designed for global HTTP/S application delivery, origin routing and acceleration with additional service-tier choices. DNS-based Traffic Manager answers a different routing question. Do not recommend one merely because it is the newest name in a feature list.

The customer-facing application in the scenario may need a regional Application Gateway and private application tier; an application with geographically distributed users and failover requirements may justify Front Door. Diagram the client connection, the public endpoint, TLS termination, the backend hop and where origin authentication and WAF policy apply. Then test what happens when one backend reports unhealthy. A passing health probe is useful evidence, but it is not a substitute for application-level transaction monitoring.

Network architecture and operating cost should be discussed together. Extra gateways, reserved IPs, cross-region paths, inspection layers and data egress can alter both latency and billing. Choose the simplest design that meets defined availability and security requirements and document the remaining risk.

Make private access work at both network and identity layers

Private Endpoints allow supported platform services to be reached using a private IP in a virtual network. This changes connectivity but does not grant a user or workload data permissions. A failed storage or database request can therefore be a name-resolution problem, a route or firewall block, a service firewall rule, or a data-plane authorization error. Diagnose those separately.

In the lab, provision a supported private endpoint, configure or link the appropriate private DNS zone, and check the hostname from an authorized client. Confirm that the expected private address is returned and the request succeeds using least-privilege identity. Next, deliberately break DNS or remove permission and record how the failure changes. A service endpoint permits restricted access through a different networking mechanism; it is not identical to giving the service a private endpoint address.

Do not treat access through a private address as proof that data cannot be exfiltrated or that the application is compliant. Confirm outbound routes, identities, authorized application behavior, diagnostic records and the organization’s actual control objectives.

Use network security controls where they can enforce a rule

Network security groups filter traffic using ordered rules associated with a subnet or network interface. The NSG rule path needs to be considered along with routing and service access. Azure Firewall can centralize traffic inspection and policy in appropriate topologies; Application Gateway WAF has an HTTP/S role rather than being interchangeable with a general network firewall. DDoS protection and Microsoft Defender for Cloud recommendations add distinct layers of resilience and risk insight.

For the branch-to-application scenario, write an allowable-flow inventory: source, destination, protocol, port, business owner and expected logging. Then implement the minimum necessary controls. An unintended default allow rule, mistaken route-table association or overly broad rule can create a path that defeats the design. Conversely, a strict rule can appear secure while blocking required health checks or recovery traffic. Verify both permit and deny cases.

In larger estates, Azure Virtual Network Manager security administration rules and connectivity configurations may change which policies apply. The current AZ-700 guide explicitly includes Virtual Network Manager and troubleshooting effective behavior, so do not teach NSGs as the only source of network policy.

Troubleshoot with evidence and use current flow logging

Azure Network Watcher provides connection troubleshoot, IP flow verify, next hop, packet capture and flow logging. Start with the symptom and choose the tool that can disprove a specific hypothesis. If a packet is denied, inspect effective network security rules. If it is permitted but goes to the wrong destination, check effective routes, DNS and private-endpoint resolution. If the connection succeeds but users still report errors, inspect application authentication, service health, backend probes and the transaction itself.

New flow-logging configurations should use virtual network flow logs. Microsoft stopped permitting new NSG flow-log creation after June 30, 2025, and schedules NSG flow-log retirement for September 30, 2027. Existing deployments need an orderly migration to virtual network flow logs and a decision about Traffic Analytics, storage, retention and cost. An exam article that teaches enabling new NSG flow logs as the default task is outdated. The current AZ-700 guide includes implementing and interpreting virtual network flow logs.

A useful troubleshooting notebook records the intended packet path, observed DNS answer, effective route, applied security policy, connection test, relevant flow log and resulting action. Retest after the change and document whether the resolution introduced any unintended exposure. This evidence is more transferable than memorizing where one diagnostic button sits in the portal.

Convert architecture into an exam-ready lab

Begin with address planning and a functioning isolated network. Add one hybrid connection, one controlled application-delivery entry point, one private platform-service dependency, and explicit network policy. Validate the traffic path end to end. Then rotate through failure exercises: wrong DNS, blocked port, missing route, unhealthy backend, expired or misplaced identity permission and unavailable network component. Describe both the immediate fix and the change that would prevent recurrence.

Review the published domain weights to balance study time, but do not treat any domain percentage as a promise about the exact question mix. Microsoft updates the blueprint periodically; use the July 27, 2026 objective version for this review and check for later changes before examination. A candidate ready for AZ-700 should be able to make a defensible design choice, configure its essential parts, show how it is monitored and explain a failure from observable evidence. That is the capability the certification study should develop.

Passing AZ-700 should mean you can explain how traffic reaches an Azure workload, how its identity and network boundaries are protected, and where to look when connectivity fails.
