It is the one that lets you predict a system’s behavior, deliberately change a condition, and test whether your architecture still meets its requirements. AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate is a design credential: the SAA-C03 exam rewards knowledge of how services interact under security, availability, performance and cost constraints, not the ability to reproduce a console tutorial from memory.

A compact reference workload can support a series of progressively richer experiments. Use a small customer-facing web application with a private data store, an object-upload feature and a background notification task. Keep the environment modest, use a budget alert, and destroy resources you do not need after the exercise. Each lab should end with an architecture decision: what the application requires, which AWS mechanism satisfies it, what alternatives were rejected, and how to prove the system behaves as expected.

Lab one: trace a request from DNS to data

After the lab works, change where the application runs without changing its service role. Move it to a different private subnet in the other Availability Zone and compare the route, security-group and load-balancer configuration. If connectivity changes unexpectedly, explain whether the cause is DNS, routing, an outbound rule, an endpoint policy or a data-tier allowlist. These controlled variations train the ability to diagnose a layered system. Recording exact expected outcomes before running the test also reduces the tendency to accept a surprising result as simply “how AWS behaves.”

Deploy a minimal VPC design with public ingress, a private application component and private database access. Draw every part of the request path before testing it: name resolution, load balancer, listener and target, application port, database connection, and the return flow. Record which subnet holds each component and what the route table actually permits.

Now make a controlled mistake. Remove the rule that allows application-to-database traffic, observe the connection failure, and restore only the correct permission. Test DNS resolution separately from the network route; a name resolving does not prove the destination is reachable. Compare the resulting diagram with VPC endpoint patterns when the application must also access a supported AWS service through private connectivity. The lab’s lesson is causality: one control failing should be explainable without guessing which service is broken.

Lab two: replace embedded credentials with workload identity

Write a small task that reads a specific S3 object. First reason about its permissions without running it. Assign an IAM role to the compute service, allow only the necessary actions and resources, and validate the behavior. Then apply a bucket restriction or encryption-key permission that intentionally blocks the request. This demonstrates why credentials existing on a workload are not enough to prove that an action is authorized.

Create a concise permission trace: principal, requested action, resource ARN, resource policy, and any additional guardrail or KMS requirement. IAM and service control policies belong in the wider explanation because they answer different questions. When the request fails, resist the instinct to apply an unrestricted wildcard allow. Diagnose precisely which required permission or condition is missing and document the least-privilege correction.

Lab three: remove a compute instance

Use two kinds of checks to define success. One tests whether the load balancer sees healthy targets; another performs a real user action that touches the database. During an instance shutdown these may disagree, revealing shared state or backend dependency problems that a synthetic 200 response hides. Next stop or impair the background worker while keeping the application tier healthy. The service may accept bookings but fail to send confirmations. These experiments sharpen the difference between infrastructure health and business availability without requiring an unrealistic region-wide disaster simulation.

Place two stateless application targets behind a load balancer, preferably across two Availability Zones, and make a small number of test requests. Stop one instance and observe health checks, request routing and replacement behavior. Ask whether a database or session store remains a single point of failure. A working load balancer does not make a session-dependent application stateless, and an Auto Scaling group cannot by itself fix an unavailable shared data tier.

Write down the failure scope the lab actually demonstrated. An instance outage is not the same as an AZ outage; neither proves regional disaster recovery. Use multi-AZ and multi-Region resilience to compare broader patterns. The most important outcome is not that the application recovered once, but that you can explain which AWS feature performed the recovery, what conditions triggered it, and what state still needed protection.

Lab four: put slow work behind a queue

Add a background notification that may take longer than the user’s web request should wait. An SQS queue can let the application accept work quickly while workers process messages asynchronously. Test duplicate delivery, a temporarily unavailable worker, and an unusually large queue. Record how the system behaves if a job is retried and whether the business operation is idempotent.

Measure request latency and queue depth before and after decoupling. You should be able to explain why a queue can improve resilience without automatically making every downstream task instantaneous. The architecture now needs visibility into failed messages, retry policy and processing delay. This is a more useful performance exercise than simply adding more EC2 capacity to a synchronous service and hoping the bottleneck disappears.

Lab five: select storage from application behavior

Give the workload two data types: user-uploaded photos and customer reservations. Store the photos as objects in S3 and reason about lifecycle, access scope, replication and retrieval. Store reservations using an appropriate managed database and decide what transaction semantics the application needs. Compare what would change if the application required shared file access or a block volume attached to compute.

The question is not whether one storage service has impressive durability claims. It is whether the interface, consistency, access frequency and recovery model fit the job. Comparing S3, EBS and EFS illustrates why “put everything in S3” is not a complete architecture method. For the data tier, use RDS and DynamoDB tradeoffs to test whether the workload is really relational or better expressed through known keys and access patterns.

Lab six: observe the cost of your design

For cost comparison, measure the workload over at least two usage patterns rather than taking a single idle-hour estimate. The first has low steady traffic and a short daily spike; the second is a constant service with predictable capacity. Compare which architecture components must stay warm, where serverless or scaling adds value, and whether network transfer or logging has become a major cost driver. Write down the cost you are deliberately accepting to preserve resilience or data protection. If you cannot explain it, the “optimization” is not grounded in the business requirement.

Use cost estimates rather than leaving the final bill as a surprise. List always-on compute and database charges, storage, request volumes, network transfer, NAT or endpoint charges where relevant, and monitoring retention. Then introduce a variable traffic curve. Does the application retain unnecessary baseline capacity overnight? Could a worker run on demand? Would aggressive storage tiering create retrieval delay or fees inconsistent with the workload?

Do not optimize by disabling the very controls that make the service meet its requirements. A multi-AZ database may cost more than a single-node system, but if the business has an AZ continuity requirement, removing that resilience is not a valid cheaper solution. Cost analysis should expose the price of meeting the design contract and the areas where waste can be reduced safely.

Lab seven: compare a healthy service with an observable one

Create a few focused metrics and alarms: application error rate, unhealthy targets, database connection pressure, queue age and possibly object access failures. Ask which signal would alert an operator to a degraded user journey before total service failure. Then distinguish those operational measurements from CloudTrail activity records that help explain who or what made an API change.

The CloudWatch and CloudTrail distinction is an easy place to overstate what monitoring can do. A CPU alarm is not a business transaction monitor, and an API audit log is not a latency metric. Select signals that align with expected failure modes. During a simulated incident, write down what the dashboards did not tell you; improving observability often begins with that missing evidence.

Turn every experiment into an exam-style explanation

Pair up with another learner if possible. Have one person write the requirement and the other propose a design without seeing the intended solution. Then change the requirement: the application can no longer use the public internet, staff capacity is reduced, data residency is constrained, or the accepted recovery time is shorter. Discuss what must change and what can remain. This exercise reveals hidden assumptions and trains the communication skills that technical interviews and architecture reviews require. The exam becomes less about a memorized selection and more about a defensible chain of reasoning.

After each lab, write one short scenario in which two reasonable designs compete. State the business requirement and the decisive constraint. Then explain your chosen option and why the others are weaker. Vary the constraint: a different recovery time, a new regulatory rule, an application that cannot be modified, or a sudden reduction in operational staff. A well-chosen variation often changes which solution is best.

This exercise develops more than console familiarity. It trains the habit of separating functional requirements from operational ones and of backing architectural claims with observable results. The same habits make SAA-C03 practice questions less mysterious and make technical design reviews more effective after the certification.

Amazon AWS SAA-C03: Learn Architecture Through Labs The most useful SAA-C03 lab is not necessarily the one that deploys the greatest number of AWS services.
