An application has users, data, traffic, identities, failure modes, latency requirements and a budget. An architect has to make those elements fit together. The SAA-C03 exam assesses that practical design judgment across secure, resilient, high-performing and cost-optimized architectures, and the foundations are the controls and patterns shared by most workloads.

You do not need to begin with a complex enterprise migration. Start with a simple website backed by persistent data, and ask a few demanding questions: how does traffic enter, which components are publicly reachable, which identity reads the data, what happens when an instance fails, and how does the bill change when traffic doubles? Those questions expose whether the fundamentals are understood as an architecture rather than remembered as definitions.

Identity is the first design boundary

A small team often starts with broad access because it makes the first deployment easy. That convenience becomes a liability when applications, developers and automation systems share credentials. A better design assigns each workload its own role and each human an appropriate access route, then uses logs to understand the actions performed. The improvement is not only technical least privilege; it also makes incidents diagnosable. If an object is deleted unexpectedly, you want to know which principal acted, through what control plane and under which authorization assumptions.

AWS Identity and Access Management governs what a principal is authorized to do. In a workload, an application often obtains credentials through a role associated with its compute environment. People may use federation or IAM Identity Center instead of individual IAM users. Permissions should be as narrow as the workflow allows, and long-lived secrets should not be embedded in code or machine images.

Authorization is layered. An identity policy may allow access while a resource policy, KMS key policy, permissions boundary or organization-level control limits the outcome. Start every access question with four parts: principal, action, resource and condition. Then determine whether a permission is granted and whether any applicable explicit deny applies. For a concrete distinction, read about service control policies and IAM policies rather than assuming a single policy document explains every failure.

VPC networking is about paths, not memorized subnets

Use an explicit routing exercise rather than naming public and private subnets by intuition. Given a route table with a local VPC route, an internet gateway path, and optional NAT or endpoint connectivity, predict where an outbound packet travels. Then vary one element: remove a security-group rule, change DNS resolution, or require S3 traffic to remain private. Explain why a route permits reachability but an IAM policy controls the subsequent service operation. This layered approach gives you a reliable debugging method when a scenario mentions both VPC networking and an AWS API call.

A VPC supplies an address space in which subnets, routes, gateways and network security controls create connectivity boundaries. A subnet is not public solely because it has a certain name; the routing and addressing determine whether its resources can reach or be reached from the internet. A public-facing load balancer may sit in public subnets while application instances and databases remain private, with security groups allowing only the necessary east-west traffic.

Trace both directions of a request. How does a user reach the load balancer? How does the application reach a private database? How does it retrieve a dependency hosted by AWS without exposing that dependency publicly? For the last question, VPC endpoint designs may be relevant depending on the service and endpoint type. Understand the relationship between route tables, DNS resolution and identity permissions; a correct IAM allow does not create the required network route.

Compute choices follow workload behavior

EC2 provides control over instances, operating systems and capacity. Containers can package services more consistently, while managed orchestration reduces some deployment burden but does not eliminate design responsibilities. Lambda suits event-driven tasks with its own runtime and integration constraints. There is no blanket ranking: select a pattern based on duration, statefulness, startup behavior, expected concurrency, operational ownership and integration requirements.

For a web service, an Application Load Balancer and an Auto Scaling group may provide a familiar baseline for availability and elastic capacity. However, a cluster that scales quickly can still overwhelm a database or a rate-limited external API. Identifying the shared bottleneck is more important than knowing the scaling menu. A serverless API with Lambda and API Gateway is a useful contrasting pattern: the application entry point and operating model differ, but authorization, data consistency and failure handling still demand design work.

Storage interfaces change application behavior

S3, EBS and EFS should be selected according to how an application reads, writes and shares data. S3 supports object workflows, often through APIs and presigned access; EBS supplies block volumes for applicable compute and database patterns; EFS offers a managed network file system for supported workloads. Lifecycle policies and backup strategies address data retention and recovery, not the primary access interface.

Suppose an application accepts user-uploaded photos. Objects in S3 may be a natural choice, with access controlled at the application and bucket level. A legacy application requiring POSIX-style shared files presents a different requirement. A transaction log with strict write behavior is different again. The S3, EBS and EFS comparison becomes meaningful when attached to these operating constraints rather than read as a table of generic pros and cons.

Databases require an access-pattern argument

A useful data-model exercise is to write three representative application queries before naming a database: retrieve a record by key, find all transactions belonging to a customer in date order, and enforce an inventory constraint during concurrent updates. These operations may have different implications for indexes, data modeling and consistency. A candidate who has rehearsed the application behavior will be better prepared to compare service options than someone who has memorized a feature matrix. Include the expected growth curve and recovery requirement, because they may change the operating model as much as the query shape does.

An RDS deployment can simplify operations for relational workloads; Aurora offers related managed relational capabilities; DynamoDB is designed for key-value and document access with its own data-model implications. A service should not be selected simply because it is labeled “fully managed” or “high scale.” Query patterns, relationships, consistency, transaction boundaries, expected throughput and recovery needs remain decisive.

Imagine a reservation system that must enforce booking consistency across several related records. A relational model may fit naturally. A high-volume session-state service with predictable keys may be a better match for a key-value design. An architect should explain the chosen model and the cost of changing it. The Amazon RDS versus DynamoDB discussion can help expose why the application’s data access is more important than product popularity.

Availability and recovery are different commitments

Resilience starts with a question about what must continue working during failure. Multiple EC2 instances behind a load balancer can handle instance loss. A database deployment across AZs may protect a different failure domain. Backups allow restoration but do not necessarily provide continuous service, and asynchronous replication can imply some acceptable data loss. The terms recovery time objective and recovery point objective describe separate dimensions of that commitment.

Before designing for multiple Regions, check whether the business actually requires regional survival. A multi-Region pattern adds replication, routing, verification, operations and cost. Multi-AZ and multi-Region resilience is useful for weighing the tradeoff. The associate exam often rewards a design that meets the stated failure objective cleanly over one that adds a far larger operational system than was requested.

Observability and cost should be part of the first diagram

An architecture that cannot explain its failures is difficult to operate. Decide which metrics establish user experience, service health, queue depth, error rates and resource saturation. CloudWatch metrics, logs and alarms address different operational questions from CloudTrail activity records. They should be selected to diagnose a service, not included as decorative boxes in a diagram. CloudTrail and CloudWatch support distinct types of evidence.

Then estimate cost with the same architectural seriousness. Include capacity, idle time, storage growth, requests, replication, logging, transfer and the labor required to maintain components. An Auto Scaling configuration changes both resilience and spending; a redundant service may earn its cost when required availability justifies it. Cost optimization is a design constraint, not a final exercise in deleting resources.

Make the foundations observable in a lab

Keep experiments reversible and financially bounded. Use test data, tag resources for cleanup, avoid unnecessary internet exposure and set budget notifications before enabling always-on components. A useful result is a small written record: the assumption, the action taken, the signal observed, the failure explanation and the design improvement. For example, a request may fail even though the application is healthy because a resource policy denies access; a load balancer may have no healthy targets because a health check path is wrong. Both observations teach the distinction between system state and component labels.

Build a small system with an application, private data store, S3 object upload, role-based access and basic monitoring. Change one control at a time, record the expected outcome, and test it. Deliberately remove permissions, stop instances, increase traffic and simulate a failed dependency. Document what actually happened and which design promise did or did not hold.

By the time you can explain each traffic path, policy decision, recovery mechanism and major cost driver, service names have become tools rather than flashcards. That is the skill the associate architecture role needs: the ability to assemble a secure, resilient, performant and proportionate design from well-understood components.

Amazon AWS SAA-C03: Foundations That Make Designs Work AWS architecture becomes easier when a candidate stops studying services as isolated products.
