The moment it can change a booking, an incorrect tool call is no longer merely a poor answer: it has altered an operational record. Safe agent architecture begins at that boundary.

The AIP-C01 exam includes tool contracts, agent state, integration, IAM and reliable operation. In July 2026, AWS placed Bedrock Agents Classic in maintenance mode for new customers; the recommended direction for modern agent workloads is Amazon Bedrock AgentCore. The migration question is how to preserve authorized business behavior, not simply how to change an SDK name.

Decide which part is an agent and which part is a tool

A work-order lookup is a bounded operation: given an authorized ticket ID, return the current state. An agent may need reasoning to identify a customer’s ambiguous problem and decide which supported operation to request, but the ticket service retains authority over what it returns. The same separation applies to booking an appointment. The model proposes the action; a business service validates identity, permissions and the actual available slot.

Write down which operations can change state before choosing a framework. Reading an approved repair guide is different from altering a customer appointment. If the proposed design needs a general administrator credential merely to support a conversation, redesign the API boundary rather than inventing an elaborate prompt intended to keep the agent polite.

Agents Classic remains relevant, but new-account availability changed

AWS documents that Amazon Bedrock Agents Classic is no longer available to new customers after July 30, 2026. Amazon Bedrock model inference, Knowledge Bases and Guardrails continue. Existing supported customers can maintain Classic workloads, while AgentCore is the modern option for new agent development and migration planning.

An existing Classic system may depend on agent action groups and infrastructure definitions that cannot be migrated by renaming one resource. Document tool behavior, permission boundaries, state persistence, evaluation cases and application contracts before changing runtimes. A migration is complete only when the new deployment preserves the accepted customer outcomes and failure handling.

Gateway authentication and tool authorization are different decisions

AWS’s AgentCore Gateway configuration also distinguishes target types. A Lambda target that uses the gateway service role is not the same as an external MCP service that expects OAuth or an API key, and support differs by target. The architecture review should name the actual target, its supported authorization mechanism and whether the business system sees the end-user identity or only a shared integration principal. In a shared-gateway deployment, constrain which callers can discover and invoke sensitive targets using available gateway policy and backend access controls. Test a legitimate tool call and a prohibited one with real application principals. A gateway that authenticates the caller but lets every authenticated person invoke a powerful tool has solved only the first half of the problem.

Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway can expose approved tools through MCP interfaces. Its inbound authorization controls who may invoke the gateway, while outbound authorization defines how it connects to a target. Depending on the target and configuration, AWS supports IAM signing and appropriate OAuth-based mechanisms. A valid gateway token does not give the caller unrestricted rights to every backend business record.

Suppose a service role can read all customer tickets but employee A should only see customer A. The target API must enforce that relationship, or a supported delegated identity flow must preserve the caller’s privileges. Don’t pass arbitrary account IDs from free-text prompts directly into privileged APIs without independent authorization checks.

Treat tool-discovery metadata and schemas as approved integration configuration. Adding a new mutation tool changes the agent’s possible actions even when its conversational instructions remain identical.

Make every state-changing tool narrow and verifiable

An API contract might represent an appointment request with fields for ticketId, customerId, proposedWindow, operationId and expectedCaseVersion. The backend validates those fields, compares the current case version and returns a controlled state. If a second request arrives with the same operationId, it should report the original outcome rather than create another booking. This is illustrative application design, not an AgentCore-specific API format. The important distinction is that the durable business record, not a model-generated sentence, is authoritative. The application should be able to reconcile an uncertain result after the response stream disconnects or a network timeout occurs.

A scheduling tool should accept a validated ticket ID, a proposed time window, the authorized actor and a stable request identifier. Its response must distinguish rejected, awaiting approval, accepted and committed states. The agent must not tell a customer that a visit exists until the scheduling system has a corresponding durable record.

A timeout after commit is especially dangerous. If the model retries with a fresh identifier, two visits could be created. Enforce idempotency or a comparable transaction-safe rule in the backend, and give operators a way to reconcile unknown outcomes. Exponential backoff addresses temporary overload; it does not prevent a duplicate side effect.

A read-only lookup can follow a simpler retry policy than a consequential write. Make that difference explicit in the tool contract, rather than asking the model to intuit what is safe.

Separate conversational context from durable business state

Consider a conversation that begins with one technician and later transfers to an authorized dispatcher. The same request history may help the dispatcher understand the customer, but it should not silently transfer administrative privileges. A new user identity must be verified against the work-order system at the point of action. Likewise, a session identifier should not be the only key used to identify a committed appointment; sessions can expire, reconnect or be duplicated across channels. Keeping state in the correct system also improves disaster recovery. When the agent process restarts, it can resume pending tasks from validated records and can tell the user whether an action is pending rather than improvising from incomplete memory.

Conversation history helps interpret a follow-up such as “move it to Thursday.” The calendar or work-order system determines which appointment actually exists. An agent’s memory of saying “booked” must not supersede the authoritative record after a runtime restart or a delayed API response.

Define memory retention, identity scope and deletion for each kind of state. Rehydrate pending work from validated service records, not from an unverified generated plan. Limit the number of tool calls and wall-clock time spent retrying an unresolved task. Without stop conditions, an agent may loop between a ticket lookup and a failed scheduling step while spending tokens but making no progress.

Test the security boundary as two different users

Add one deliberately misleading document to the synthetic test environment. It might instruct the assistant to ignore normal scheduling checks. The correct behavior is to treat the text as source content and allow it to influence neither backend authorization nor financial and scheduling policy. Test whether a retrieved passage can cause the model to select an unapproved tool, and verify that the tool still rejects any invalid request independently. Check the trace for which tool was requested, which principal was authenticated at the target and what business state actually changed. This demonstrates defense in depth: content filtering can reduce malicious instructions reaching the model, while API authorization and transaction validation remain necessary if the model makes an unsuitable decision.

Set up a fictional organization with employee A and employee B, each assigned to different customer tickets. Give the agent a read-only lookup and a simulated booking action. Test the allowed read under A, then request B’s ticket under A’s session. The denial must happen in a server-enforced access check, not after a forbidden record has already entered model context.

Next request a booking that requires human approval and confirm that no committed appointment exists until approval is registered. Simulate a timeout after the action has committed and check whether a retry creates another appointment. Use harmless synthetic records and authorized infrastructure. These tests probe the actual permissions and transaction behavior, not just the language of the final answer.

Keep a migration decision record

Migration also creates an ownership problem. The team that knows the legacy action group may not own the new gateway target or the identity provider. Assign a named owner for the runtime, tool schema, credentials, logs and business response when the agent fails. Record which environment currently has access to Agents Classic and whether new test accounts can be provisioned under the same conditions. An organization should not plan a rollback to a resource it is no longer permitted to create. Rehearse the rollback or traffic cutover before the production migration, including how pending actions are reconciled. The engineering goal is continuity of the customer service and a clear audit trail, not the novelty of the orchestration stack.

A migration review can use a compact set of criteria:

What to validate before moving an agent workload

Concern

Original Classic workload

AgentCore design

Runtime

Record account eligibility and existing agent behavior

Test supported runtime and deployment dependencies

Tools

Inventory action groups, identities and schemas

Approve MCP or other narrowly governed interfaces

State

Describe session recovery and pending actions

Reconstruct state from authoritative records

Safety

Capture allowed, denied and timeout cases

Run the same security and business regressions

The engineer’s release decision should be based on those tested outcomes, not on whether a diagram now says AgentCore. A stable, auditable workflow with bounded permissions is more valuable than an impressive demo whose tool execution cannot be explained.

Secure agentic application design for AIP-C01: AgentCore and Classic lifecycle, MCP tools, delegated permissions, durable state and reliable writes.

[2344,2342

post-12446","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-amazon","category-certifications

 <!-- All in One SEO 5.0.3 -
