In another region, a production application is unavailable after a regional outage. The teams facing those incidents both say they need “recovery,” but the requirements are different. One needs a usable earlier copy; the other may need a running workload and its dependencies in another location.

The AZ-104 exam includes backup policies, Recovery Services and Backup vaults, Azure Backup operations, Site Recovery configuration, failover to a secondary region, and backup reporting. A good administrator must distinguish backup from replication, know which recovery objective each meets, and test whether the business application—not just an individual VM—can return to service.

Define the failure before selecting a recovery service

Accidental deletion, corruption, ransomware, zone loss and regional failure call for different controls. A backup provides recovery points that can restore protected data or supported workloads to an earlier state. Replication maintains a recoverable copy or state at a secondary location according to the chosen service and configuration; it supports failover but may also replicate a bad change or corruption. Neither concept alone guarantees that a user can complete a business transaction after recovery.

Before choosing a service, ask what must be restored: an individual blob, an Azure disk, a whole VM, a database, or an application consisting of several components. Then document how much data the business can afford to lose, how quickly operations must resume and whether the restoration can occur in the same region. A single “backup enabled” indicator does not answer those questions.

The Azure backup and recovery guide covers service options more broadly. AZ-104 preparation is strongest when those options are evaluated against a specific incident and a tested restoration path.

Recovery point and recovery time are separate promises

Recovery point objective (RPO) describes the maximum acceptable age of recovered data—the tolerated data loss measured back from the incident. Recovery time objective (RTO) describes the maximum tolerable interruption before the service must operate again. An application with a four-hour RPO and one-hour RTO needs both sufficiently frequent recoverable data and a way to restore the required components within that hour.

Suppose daily backups are the only recoverable copies. They may be adequate for some archival records but fail an application requiring a recovery point no more than a few minutes old. Conversely, replication that provides recent data may still miss the required RTO if there is no plan for networking, identity, DNS, dependencies and application startup in the recovery location.

Do not present RPO and RTO as guaranteed properties of a product name. Measure them in a rehearsal under conditions similar to the intended incident. Business stakeholders must approve the objectives and understand the cost and complexity required to meet them.

Choose the vault and protection model for the workload

Azure Backup uses vault resources to organize protection, policies, retention and recovery for supported workloads. A Recovery Services vault supports scenarios including Azure VM backup and Site Recovery. Backup vaults support selected newer backup data sources and protection models, such as some disk- or blob-oriented scenarios; available options and exact prerequisites differ by workload. Administrators must confirm service-specific support, region and policy options instead of assuming any vault protects every Azure resource.

Begin from the object needing protection. If the task is to protect an Azure VM, identify the supported vault type and backup policy for that VM. If the task is to protect a disk or object-data scenario, inspect the current protection capability for that data source. A vault named in a portal tutorial is not evidence that its policy can restore the particular workload.

Also consider who may alter protection and delete recovery points. Use narrowly scoped permissions, supported soft-delete or immutability controls where applicable, and an audit trail of policy modifications. Administrative access to the production VM should not automatically imply uncontrolled access to remove the last recoverable copy.

Backup policies express retention and operational tradeoffs

A backup policy defines relevant schedule and retention settings for the workload and vault. Frequent recovery points can reduce potential data loss, but they introduce capacity, retention and operational cost considerations. Retention should be set from actual recovery and compliance requirements, not a generic instinct to keep everything forever.

Imagine an application whose data changes heavily during business hours. The administrator should understand which backup snapshots and recovery points will exist when a deletion occurs, and whether that schedule meets the allowed data-loss window. If a restore uses a point from before a scheduled batch, the recovered application may need reconciliation of later transactions. That downstream responsibility should be recognized before a disaster.

Monitor failures and missing recovery points. The fact that a policy was configured months ago does not prove that its most recent backup completed. A useful readiness report identifies the protected resource, latest valid recovery point, expected next execution and the result of a recent restoration test.

A restoration test should validate more than VM startup

A recovery test is incomplete if it stops when a restored VM powers on. Confirm that its disks contain the intended data, required services start, application credentials remain valid and clients can reach the endpoint. For a database-backed web app, restore the data and run a representative read/write transaction in an isolated environment. Compare the restored data timestamp with the business’s RPO.

A VM might boot into a network where DNS points toward the production database. A careless test could modify live data or expose a duplicate system identity. Use isolated networks, test credentials and a documented approach to reconnect only the intended dependencies. Recovery rehearsals are operational changes; they deserve the same safety boundaries as deployments.

Record the elapsed time from beginning the procedure until the application is genuinely usable. If recovery takes three hours against a one-hour objective, the test has found a gap—regardless of whether the restore job reports success.

Site Recovery solves a different part of continuity

Azure Site Recovery supports replication and orchestration for supported VM disaster-recovery scenarios, including failover to a target environment. It is designed to keep workloads recoverable after significant disruption and can coordinate parts of a failover plan. It does not replace an independent backup strategy where protection against accidental deletion, corruption or other data incidents requires older recoverable points.

For a two-tier application, a recovery plan can sequence dependent machines and include approved actions around failover. The administrator must also prepare network addressing, DNS, identity and access, target capacity, service endpoints and dependent data services. If an application server starts before its database endpoint is usable, the infrastructure might appear recovered while customers continue to see errors.

Do not claim that a replica or recovery plan automatically meets a particular RTO. Design and test the full application path, including actions outside the replication service such as traffic routing or external integrations.

Run test failovers without disrupting production

A successful isolated failover rehearsal should end with a clear decision about readiness. Measure when the selected recovery point was taken, the time needed to bring each dependent component online, and the moment a test user could complete a representative transaction. If the application starts but cannot authenticate to a downstream service, classify that as an incomplete recovery and add the missing dependency to the plan. Also document how operators would return traffic and workloads to their normal location when appropriate; failback requirements are not automatically the same as failover instructions. Record which steps are automated and which depend on a human or an outside team. A plan that works only when its original author is available is not a dependable operational recovery capability.

Site Recovery provides test-failover workflows intended to validate recovery in an isolated environment without interrupting ongoing production replication. The test environment still needs care: running two machines with the same identity on the same network can create collisions, and accidental production database connections can corrupt the experiment. Choose a separate network and define exactly which dependencies should be copied or simulated.

Before the test, document the recovery point and target network, expected startup order and what constitutes success. During the drill, verify the application transaction, identity paths and necessary network connections. After the test, remove temporary test resources through the supported cleanup procedure and confirm that replication of the production workload remains healthy.

Treat the drill as a feedback loop. If the recovery endpoint has incorrect DNS or lacks a certificate, update the runbook and the required infrastructure. Do not keep repeating an unverified script because the failover job shows a green result.

Backup alerts are useful only when someone investigates them

Azure Backup provides status, reporting and alerting features for relevant protected workloads. Configure notifications for failed protection jobs and other material conditions, but also give them an accountable responder. A weekly report that shows overdue recovery points should trigger investigation of the actual cause: authentication, connectivity, policy scope, vault access, agent condition or supported service limit.

A common weakness is monitoring only successful scheduled jobs without ever measuring restoration success. Add a regular restoration exercise and record the result. For a workload with important business records, one confirmed recoverable sample can be more meaningful than dozens of dashboard indicators.

When a backup policy is changed, review whether the new retention or frequency conflicts with the business’s requirements. A policy that saves storage cost by discarding required recovery points is not a successful optimization.

Practice three incidents and compare the corrections

Incident one: a user overwrites an important document. Find the appropriate object version, retained copy or supported backup, and restore only what is necessary. Incident two: a VM’s guest operating system becomes unusable. Determine whether a restore of the machine, disk or selected data is justified and confirm its application dependencies. Incident three: a regional outage affects multiple components. Evaluate Site Recovery, target network readiness, identity and traffic routing before declaring the service recoverable.

For each case, record the available recovery points, expected RPO/RTO, first action, permissions required and how success will be tested. Do not assume the same vault or failover procedure fits all three. Keep destructive scenarios inside an authorized disposable lab and avoid relying on production incidents for learning.

The important AZ-104 distinction is between having a copy, having a replica and having an operationally tested recovery. A responsible administrator knows which one the organization has and which one its actual requirements demand.

An administrator-focused AZ-104 comparison of Azure Backup vaults, backup policies, recovery points, Site Recovery failover, RPO/RTO and tested restoration.

[2342,2353
1236
post-12196","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-certifications","category-microsoft","tag-az-104

 <!-- All in One SEO 5.0.3 -
