How to Convert PDF to VCE - Please Read Me First!!!

This is a good write up and it needs to be pinned up.

I also think it is necessary to key people in to the other areas to be aware of in convertion process.

As I write these details, please keep the following in mind. I don't know if other QAE PDF providers are the same as TestKing, I understand the pools are essentually the same. However, I am basing my experience below on all the TestKing QAE's for numerous Cisco Test's I've either converted or used. I understand that the Microsoft or CompTIA sections may be more reliable.

First off, as many people know, not all the PDF convertion products are the same. Specifically, with regards to literal line feeds and paragraph breaks. Depending on the product used, the convertion can make all line feeds reproduced as paragraph breaks or vice-versa. This is particularly important when you are considering asthetics and general readability of the final product.

Typically, your conversion will results in random answers with a paragraph break in the middle of the sentence (where the PDF may have started a new line of text) and then a word of two on the line below with another paragraph break.

The right PDF conversion software will make it possible to locate and remove these unneeded line feeds and leave proper the paragraph breaks.

Secondly, TestKing QAE's are more or less consistantly-inconsistant. What I mean is that you may have all the Answers proper with the "X. " prefix, but more than likely you will find a hand full of questions that don't import correctly. For example the following would fail and is easy to over look:
A. 10Mbps
B. 100Mbps
C 1000Mbps
D. 10Gbps

The "C " is not the same as "C. " and will cause the import to flake out.

Lastly, TestKing QAE's usually have dozens of sections that restart the question numbers or "QUESTION NO:". The tutorial states to replace all the "QUESTION NO: " with "Q" which is correct. However, it doesn't state that we have to make the Q#'s manually increment. Some decent RTF editors can do incremental replacements, but you have to be careful or do it by hand.

Personally, I convert the PDF to straight text, use TextPad for my search and replace, then macro in HTML code (for bolding difference question areas), convert to RTF, manually copy/paste the images, import RTF to VCE, and macro the question assignment to the appropriate majors sections/topics.

Ultimately, even if you are really good with regular expression with search and replace, you HAVE to manually go through the RTF. Search & Replace do about 95% of the preparation for the RTF to VCE import. However, you will most likely not catch each and every missing line feed, missing spaces, or periods. These all become verify apparent when you go to import to VCE.

The new TK PDFs are really very hard to organize and prepare before importing to VCE ...

i've been doing that in the 70-270 v33 for 3 days , till my hard disk failed

by the way .. u said that there is a RTF editor that would rearrange the Q Numbers , what is it ?? i would try it rather that spend more time rewriting the numbers all over again , 1, 2, 3, 4, Oo0ops

and there is another thing .. i can see that no one is answering requests from the admins .. is any body there of 'em

i see that we must make a team work .. and organize conversion processes , rather that losing time when two or three or maybe 4 do the same work .. and 1 only get used and published ..
that is important as some Converted VCE's are not published right away i've uploaded a VCE a week ago , and not published till the time i'm writing ..

Let's make a team and put everything together, organize the work.

In my case -> I'm interested in M$ 70-293, 294, & 298. and next year in January in CCNA.

Let's do this -> ask the admins (maybe they are busy - I don't know) to change a little bit the format of the Forum in order to make teams to work with projects like M$ 293, 294 etc or CISCO 801, 811 etc. Who wants to join the team and split the work is welcome. It's easier this way!

What I use for my incremental Q replacement is: TextPad http://www.textpad.com/.

They have a very indepth regular expression search and replace feature. Basically, what I do is replace all the Questions "QUESTION NO: [0-9][0-9]" down to a consistant name like "QQQ". I then repeat the process for each iteration of question header like "QUESTIONNO:" and "QUESTION NO:" (paying special attention to the spaces). Finally, once each question header is consistantly replaced with "QQQ" then replace "QQQ" with "Q\i" (or "Q" & increment from #1).

The only issue with doing this replacement within TextPad is that you have to go back put it back to Word or whatever and import the images back in. I'm sure there are more powerful RTF editors, but I do it in a two step process because I already have Textpad and Word. I tried to research the subject, but I don't believe Word can do an incremental replacement.

Im trying to convert the pdf v107 of CISOC CCNA to RTF but I can't cause the file is too large, 1024 questions. Windows crash and the final file rtf is too huge, several Gigabytes....

what can i do?

I thought about splitting the pdf in sections, and converting it one by one but I don´t have enough time.

any another idea?
